This is a demonstration of the Burk Flange Alignment Tool manufactured by the G.A.L. Gage Company.
It is a simple, and cost-effective method for craftspersons and quality personnel to inspect a flange assembly.
The tool has a 150 / 300# nib, a 400# and over nib, to check the gasket crush and flange parallelism.
It also has a 1/16" inch scale to check maximum center-line high / low.
As a quick reference, the maximum allowances for a flange assembly are etched on the backside of the tool.
The tool can be used on all raised face flanges using spiral-wound gaskets.
Our first example, is a 2" 300# flange assembly.
+ Inspect for the correct gasket.
+ Inspect for the correct size, length, and grade of bolts and nuts.
Using the center-line high / low measurement, you'll note that it is LESS than 1/16 of an inch.
Using the 400# and over nib, notice how it can NOT be inserted between the flanges in at least four locations. This would indicate that this is an acceptable flange assembly.
Our second example is a 2" 150# flange assembly.
+ Inspect for the correct gasket.
+ Inspect for the correct size, length, and grade of bolts and nuts.
Using the center-line high / low measurement, you'll note that it is GREATER than 1/16 of an inch. Which is unacceptable.
Using the 150 / 300# nib, notice how it can NOT be inserted between the flanges in some locations but it CAN be inserted between the flanges in the other locations. Which is unacceptable. These indications will show that this is a failed flange assembly.
