Thank you! It's such a powerful song! That is a great question, thank you for asking. I’m happy to answer the best I can. Musical riffs and runs are a conscious choice, and people do them for a multitude of reasons. I want to answer your question first from a “musical” standpoint. Music is a beautiful thing. Often this question you ask is always directed to singers but it also applies to other instruments within music! The voice is an “instrument.” It can do many things beyond holding straight notes and singing one genre of music. A guitar player or piano player can do riffs and runs and you listen to them all the time without even knowing. Oftentimes, in songs, you'll hear stringed instruments, guitars, pianists, and bassists, do a run “not written” into the original composition or chord structure. This is a form of musical expression. Riffs, runs, and chord changes can add musical contrast and interest to a song. They can add depth to the dynamic of a song, and when done correctly, have a powerful impact. It's also a way to interpret a piece of music in your own way. Now I would agree that riffs and runs can be distracting when overdone. I also agree that many singers sadly use them as a “look at me” moment. However, saying that all singers use them for that purpose would be inaccurate. Let's think about this... Firstly, The word of God says in Ephesians 2:10 that. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” God has designed and crafted each person with unique gifts and talents. I fully believe that He's enabled some singers with the gift of vocal agility. If He has given this ability to singers why would we not use the gift He has given us to its full potential for Him? I want to give every part of me to Him! More importantly, I believe God is more concerned about the “song coming from our heart” than the sound solely from our lips. For I can sing a worship song, singing every note straight but it still can be for my gain. Or I could be living in sin and just be singing going through the motions all while not doing any runs and God still be unpleased or my worship not be accepted. Psalm 66:18 says, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” That verse is a powerful and sobering reminder that how we worship matters. It’s very much about our inward condition not just solely our outward condition. Worship isn’t primarily about music, techniques, liturgies, songs, or methodologies. It’s about our hearts. It’s about what and who we love more than anything and here’s my sobering discovery. I learned that I could lead others in worshipping God and be worshipping something else in my own heart. That’s a dangerous place to be! In Psalm 15 David talks about going to “your sanctuary” and “your holy hill.” What a sacred destination. No wonder he precedes to cite the personal qualifications of those who may comfortably go there. He says, “Lord who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.” David points out that no one can simply barge in on the Lord. It takes a prepared heart who is fully committed to Him! It takes a heart and mind that loves Him with all of their being! Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). While it’s simplistic to say that worship is love, it’s a fact that what we love most will determine what we worship! I say all this to say that I can sing every note straight and it still comes from a “wrong place.” “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain” -Matthew 15:8-9 Gospel singers do runs all the time as it's very cultural and how they express their worship! To say that “You are doing that for show” would be wrong if you don’t know the place and intention it's coming from! At the end of the day, everyone views this topic differently and that's ok. I myself would rather hear someone sing a song only doing straight notes than a singer who does a riff every single word. As it can be distracting even if you don't mean it to be. Moderation and placement are key. And for some, runs are simply distracting. So it's about preference. As for myself, I don't use runs as a "look at me." That's just not who I am. All I do is for God's glory, not mine! It all belongs to Him and He's worthy of it all! I hope this answers your question. God bless.
