Ya Salaam - Kora version of Maryam Shehab's "Is This Peace?"
A few weeks ago I first heard this deep, mournful song “Is this peace?” by young P@lestinian singer Maryam Shebab @solomkj and found it deeply resonant and poignant, articulating the tragedy of violence brought down upon the P@lestinian people in ways that speak directly to the heart of our humanity.
The original Arabic has been translated by @sadiq_ul_islam:
If this is peace
Then why would we ask for peace
There’s a look that makes my heart ache,
In my dream.
Words after words.
An eye bleeding water.
In a space in the middle of space
It has no place in existence
Why not?
In the words of our elder Martín Prechtel, “What can no longer be seen can still be remembered and if it was food then, it is medicine now. If it was hard then it is soft grief now. Grief unstiffens life and gives a river-like liquidity to the Holy who courts life into beauty. Anything else is all eternal warfare.”
What is praiseworthy about the work of this young woman Maryam is the way she has transformed her pain for the plight of her people and their land into a grief song which can soften our hearts and help metabolize our collective pain into life-affirming beauty. She is expressing an essential human capacity to transform curses into blessings, which is the deeply spiritual work we must all engage in to heal ourselves of the trauma of war to make a future possible for the children.
We should never miss the opportunity to praise what is praiseworthy, especially in the young, and to grieve what has been lost. This is how we celebrate life, remembering and honoring what we have loved and lost, without becoming hard-hearted, for it is this hard-heartedness which sows the seeds of the next war. Our grief songs transform our bitterness and pain into sweetness, and forever engaged in this process, our hearts can fully taste the richness of life, which is bittersweet.

Gorgeous music! 71 generations is somewhat exaggerated - If you count five generations per century, 70 generations spans 14 centuries, ie 1,400 years - it is extremely doubtful that fully documented and authentic linear ancestry records exists in Mali.
I’m Malian and I can confirm you that it’s the thruth. We can Even retrace the lineage of our ancestors to something like 300 BC. Memory of our elders is something else

This is a Kaëlig built kora, using geared tuning pegs modeled on the old friction style of violins, cellos, etc. I have switched from fishing line (monofilament) to instrument grade nylon strings.
