*Best DIY* Faux Cane Stencil Vintage Desk Makeover
My small furnished beach cottage rental will be vacant in a few weeks. Before the next tenant moves in, this gives me a chance to give a vintage desk a quick makeover with chalk paint and a chic faux cane basketweave type stencil look. I've been dreaming of a deep navy color with a camel and white cane accent on the top desk and drawer.
As I was cleaning the desk, I noticed that the desk top slides out for an extra foot of work space. I am so excited about this. Right now it is sticky and doesn't glide out smoothly. Some sandpaper and furniture wax will do the trick.
Vintage desks with their slim profile are perfect pieces to add to a small living room or home office, and because they are made from solid wood, they will last another 50 years or more.

Easy DIY Custom Upgrades to Outdoor Privacy Screen

I did a process similar to that decades ago but using post cards. I guess it was an early form of decoupage? But I have never seen it done on fabric and I would never have thought to do it either. Well done I love your thinking outside the box creativity. Oh ps your mannequin in the corner, is it another project of yours or did you get it like that?

Oh, I love the idea of using postcards too. I’m intrigued by all forms of simple fabric transfer. Ironically, my sister gave me a beautiful Cricut machine for that very purpose, and I have yet to use it. You have such a keen eye! That is an old dress form that I painted with a glazing technique and used decoupage to affix a magazine print to the body of the mannequin. It was one of my first big projects that was used to decorate a party at Christie’s auction house in NYC. Thanks so very much for watching. Hi Tini. I used a large bag of Celluclay premixed paper mache. It costs about $23 at Michael’s. The cardboard cement form I bought from Home Depot for $13. The mailer tubes cost about $9. The most expensive part of the project is the type of rattan fabric you use which can run from $14-25/yd. I believe I used close to 2.5 yards. Hope this helps! Let me know how it works for you. The larger pink guava I planted in ground lost all of its leaves during that plant shock period and then got eaten by some kind of worm. Now that it is established, I just amend the soil with worm castings, and it is thriving. So fun to share ideas with you. XOXO

I’m constantly using wasp spray on regular wasps that build their nest under deck railings, peaks of roofs…my DIY was an entertainment center I bought online at a bargain. I had another use for it in mind. I assembled it & didn’t like the gray doors & shelf. The main unit was a beautiful creamy white, which is the background color of my kitchen wallpaper that I still haven’t used in the kitchen. That pipe cutter! I love it. I must get one for my tool box. I still have not transferred print to material yet but one of these days…I think the curtain is perfect in your space & the ideas for making it gave me ideas for helping my daughter- in-law “sew” curtains for her classroom windows. (The vertical blinds are simply ugly & need covering 😂) Adding the slip cover will help keep dust & light off your beautiful fabric stash. Another fabulous creation. Thank you for sharing. PS, the bows are the cutest finishing touch. 💕

Hello Friend! You are an amazing person! My hat goes off to you for your amazing DIY slip cover. In addition, it is a good idea to cover the bookshelves with a slipcover. The magnetic curtain rods and hooks that you used to hang the slipcover are really cool. It is a must that I will give the picture transfer a try. Just for the record, I've been a fan since the NEW YORK Nutshell Living days, you appeared on Small Spaces. You inspire me with your style. You always design or decorate your space with an air of peace, coziness, and elegant. enjoy your weekend, keep creating beautiful contents.

Hi Linda! I cannot believe how successful you have been with your orchids! They are a magical plant. Do you know how to sketch? That is one of those skills I wish I had. Have you been able to check off your DIY to-do list? With your son and your own comeback from injuries, I hope you are still feeling hopeful. The caretaker for my mother cancelled on me again so I am faced with a few more project delays on my end. I feel stressed, but it is out of my control. See you at the next episode!

@@NutshellLivingI haven’t started on the DIYs. 😮 😄 I knew I wouldn’t enjoy them if I crammed them between all the things going on in my life. Instead, I’ve taken moments here & there to examine what I have & do some deliberate thinning out, creating more space. It’s amazing how quickly one can accumulate “things”! It has been therapeutic. I find I gain momentum & can more easily “let go” by frequently going through this process. I like to think I’m cleaning the canvas for the future DIYs. 😊 I try to sketch, can’t say I’m brilliant at it but it is a relaxing thing to do while listening to an audible book or message. I truly hope you can get someone reliable, compassionate & knowledgeable to help you with the care of your Mom. While we need space for our own adult lives, the moments I spent with my Mom toward the end of her life were precious & now fill me with memories to hold onto now that she isn’t with me any more. I didn’t realize how much those times would mean. I thought I’d fall apart with all the demands of work & life & the need to be there for her. I didn’t. I know now I gained strength. Isn’t that just like life? It’s in retrospect we see better. Keeping you & your Mom in thoughts & prayers.

My GE Fridge is stainless steel on the front and the side is black on the side. I was getting a can of carrots off the top shelve and it fell putting a little scratch on the top of the black. I ordered Black Permanent Paint pens, Never Fade Paint Pens ,Medium Tip Quick Dry And Waterproof Permanent Oil-Based Paint Marker Pens For Rock,Glass,Plastic,Wood,Metal,Fabric,DIY Craft. This Black pen should cover the tiny black scratch. 😃 You did an excellent job with the stainless steel makeover.

Hi Sandra! What great questions. The guava tree is on a plant dolly with wheels and is easily movable. As long as the tree can be removed from its pot, we’ll be able to lie it on its side and pull it out. Guava limbs stay pretty pliable so that is the hope for its future. I did not think about the possible insect situation. We don’t have lots of spider problems in the garden, but if I did see a problem arising, we are on a good Orkin program at the property. I’ll have them spritz and do what they do. I live in sunny San Diego so I hope this basket will last a few months. I’ll make sure and provide an update once we get into fall. Thanks for your thoughtful and constructive comments. Hope to see you for the next episode.

Such a brilliant idea! I totally love it. Thank you for showing us this cute project. I am so sorry you’ve been under the weather. A summer cold seems so much worse than one in the winter, I think. My son had his follow up visit with his doctor. He is healing well but can’t return to work until the new year. The family is pulling together & God has already blessed with financial help with the $400,000 hospital bill. My orchid is pink! I have 5 open blooms right now. 🎉 I can’t thank you enough for the tip on that fertilizer.💕 Don’t over do it, give yourself time to recover from the cold/flu. 😊
