First Flight With My New Wing

After months of kiting with an old wing over the winter my Flow Cosmos arrived last week and conditions were just right for my first solo launch. I towed aloft to 1500' and had an awesome flight.

Grumman Albatross HU-16 Formation Flight
มุมมอง 3762 ปีที่แล้ว
I recently found a video tape of one of the Albatross Training programs out at Lake Mead in February 2001. We had five Grumman Albatri? on the beach at one time and were practicing beaching the aircraft and having lunch. This was a low pass by two in formation. Quality of video reflects using my phone to make a digital copy;-)
3rd Launch off of Lookout Mountain

I got a lot of flying in via Aero-towing but this is only my third mountain launch. I got one in at dawn and this is an evening launch. Good launch and good landing in little to no wind.

    Great footage - thanks for sharing. Love the sights & sounds; nice filming! Imagine those landings doing SAR in the open ocean back in the day with seas going several feet high. The Albatros was certified for wave heights of around 9 ft plus if I'm correct. For take-off in these conditions JATO was needed. Awesome plane & great video. Thanks for taking us onboard 👍

    Is it just me, or does the landing gear on this thing appear flimsy as hell?? I suppose if it's primarily designed to land on water, and use the gear to taxi up the ramp then it's adequate. But putting this plane down hard on cement in a gusty crosswind? Yikes.

    What is he doing when he reaches for something to the right of throttles an moves or jiggles something that seem to increase RPM??? Is that the prop condition lever? Don’t think so, though he does push what I think is condition levers in full just after touch and go. Curious what all he’s doing with overhead controls.

    • @nowlookatthat
      @nowlookatthat ปีที่แล้ว

      Although this question is several years old, I'll try an educated guess (please correct me if I'm wrong): It might have to do with mixture; prior to landing he might increase to full rich so the engines rev higher (which one can hear) & are more responsive? Or he's manually activating the turbochargers? To my knowledge the Wright R-1820-76s were equipped with hydraulically actuated single-stage two-speed turbochargers. In an old movie ("Flight from Ashiya") featuring the Albatros the pilots are seen pressing these controls too whilst going through the water landing checklist & one calls out "engines full high rpm". So might be?

    When I was a boy I would spend hours at Baltimore's Harbor Field with my best pal Tony. We would watch the activities at the field from the old Broening highway bridge or down by the hangers and the boarding area. A cast iron fence between us and the aircraft on the runway. Unimaginable in today's world! I can still hear the Albatrosses adjusting throttle and prop pitch as they climbed out in my memory. Watching the video brought back memories and filled in what happened during flight. You have no idea how I miss those days!!

    That footage was shit hot! How cool's that pilot, "Tom" . You lucky bugger Maurice and fellow cast members. Stick & rudder flying. What a fantastic machine. Seeing that has made my day! Maurice, you should complete the credits. That would do Tom & his Grumman justice. Someone needs to update the Top 10 list of things to do in Danbury to include, visiting the Municiple Airport to view the Albatross. In my book it would be worth the 19 hours I would have to spend in a 777-300ER. Good work again Maurice

    Excellent! Nothing else sounds quite like an Albatross on takeoff. In the early 1960s I would sit in my classroom at Port Royal School in Southhampton, Bermuda and watch and listen to the newly designated Coast Guard HU-16Es and Navy P-5Ms takeoff and land in Great Sound. My ears would always perk up at the sound of an Albatross and I would wonder if my dad was aboard.

      The SA-16 did a great jo. Of converting 115/145 fuel to large sound. I had about 2000 hours in the SA-16 with three water rescues plus one pick up from an AAmerican oil tanker with a wounded onboard. I flew the first out of the US to Tripoli Lybia. I landed several times far out on the Sahara so that will stand up to anything. The flap setting is justo the right of the throttles. The Albatross is great and very strong like all open sea type birds, I flew the OA-10 (PBY) before
