Selected Poems by Kabir.
One of India’s greatest mystics, Kabīr (1440 - 1518) was one of the great mystical poets or poet-saints of medieval India. A philosopher, he was equally immersed in theology and social thought, music and politics.
Kabir did not define himself as Hindu, Muslim or Sufi. He despised creeds, denominations and asceticism, taking Eastern philosophy in a new direction.
An illiterate weaver, the great Indian master of the 15th century spoke, in accessible language, about mystical love and communion with the divine.
His words are marked by rhetorical boldness and conceptual subtlety. Irreverent and accused of heresy, he came to be considered a saint by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs.
For Kabir, life was reduced to a game between each man’s soul (atman) and God (paramatma); Achieving the union of both would be the mission of earthly life.
Transmitted from generation to generation, his oral poems condense and harmonize the most sublime acquisitions of yoga and Sufism.
