Aldebaran Torpedo Boat
The wreck of the Italian torpedo boat Aldebaran, sunk during World War II and located at a depth of 104 meters in the Saronic Gulf, is a major attraction for scuba diving enthusiasts. It is one of the 91 shipwrecks in the Greek seas that, according to a list of the Central Council of Modern Monuments of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and can be visited for recreational diving, aiming at the development of diving tourism.
The loss of the two torpedo boats in the heart of the Saronic Gulf.
On the afternoon of 19 October 1941, the torpedo boat Altair struck a mine and lost its bow. Immediately the Italian navy started an attempt to rescue the rest of the ship by towing it by the Italian torpedo boat Lupo .
During the towing operation, however, the Altair sank.
The torpedo boat Aldebaran , sailed from Piraeus to provide assistance to the Altair, which a few hours earlier and while escorting a convoy from Piraeus to Crete struck a mine west of Agios Georgios island, in the Saronic Gulf.
It was initially thought that the torpedo boat Altair had been torpedoed by an enemy submarine. Aldebaran's mission was to rescue the castaways and provide assistance to Altair.
However, on 20 October 1941 at 09:05 hours, the torpedo boat Aldebaran also struck a mine that exploded in the reefs, near the bridge, cutting the ship in two. At 09:40 Aldebaran heavily wounded sank at a depth of 104 metres, west of Agios Georgios in the Saronic Gulf. Its bow remained inverted on the sea surface and eventually sank as well. According to the war diary of the German naval command in the Aegean, there were 14 dead and 140 survivors, including five seriously wounded and ten slightly wounded.
The double loss of Aldebaran and Altair revealed the presence of an underwater minefield at the exit of the Saronic Gulf and troubled the German command.
On 21st of October the German Aegean Naval Command banned navigation in the sea area and the Italian minesweepers RD 9 , RD 26 and RD 46 were sent to locate the minefield. On the first day three mines were found and sunk, while even more were found under the sea surface.
The British minefield
On 3 October 1941, the submarine RORQUAL sailed from Port Said, Egypt, on her 18th war patrol, after refuelling with 50 Mk XVI mines. Her mission was to lay a minefield on the island of Agios Georgios (also known as San Giorgio) in the approaches to the Saronic Gulf, as it had been noted that it was being used as a reference point for the Italian naval forces responsible for the defence of the Saronic Gulf and the very important port of Piraeus.
K. Thoctarides: "HMS RORQUAL was one of the most active submarines of World War II. She was one of the six minelayer submarines of the Royal Navy's Porpoise class and the only one of the class that was lucky enough to see the end of the war. She operated mainly in the Mediterranean and had two missions in the Far East. She laid a total of 1,335 mines in 33 war patrols, succeeding in sinking at least 20 ships."
S. Vougidis:"At 11:29 on 8 October 1941, she laid 50 mines in two subsequent steps at a depth of 2.5 meters (8 feet) along a distance of 2.7 nautical miles. The procedure was completed at 12:12 and the submarine departed the area."
With the completion of the laying, the submarine RORQUAL continued her patrol passing through the channel of Kythera and following a course towards Malta.
S.Vougidis:"The Italian torpedo boats ALTAIR and ALDEBARAN were the only victims of the RORQUAL minefield in the Saronic Gulf on 20 October 1941. After their sinking, the German Aegean Naval Command ordered an intensive and continuous effort to clear the area of mines in order to preserve the critical sea routes to and from Piraeus."

The wreck of the Italian torpedo boat Aldebaran has been resting since 1941, at a depth of 104 metres west of Agios Georgios in the Saronic Gulf.
K. Thoctarides: "We are actually talking about two sections, the bow and the rest of the ship. The visibility in the area is very good, more than 15 meters. The wreck sections remain intact, since due to the great depth in which it is located, it was never salvaged after the war by the Shipwreck Salvage Agency. So visitors to the sunken Aldebaran today have the opportunity to see a very impressive WWII wreck."
The ship was literally cut in two in the area where the bridge was by the powerful explosion caused by the British mine; the bow lies inverted on the seabed at quite a distance due to the fact that it had remained afloat for several minutes in 1941.
In 2014 the identification of the wreck was made by the diver Antonis Grafas.

Can anyone who put this video together confirm if the closing photo is of the crew of Trooper. If it is then it will have my Great Uncle on it and we don't have that photo or any of him in service. The sub number in the background doesn't look like N91 which was HMS Trooper's number.
My Great Uncle Denis Seddon was a stocker first class on Trooper and died on her aged 23. It's good that the family now know his final resting place. RIP Denis and all your crewmates
I am so glad HM Trooper has finally been found leading stoker Harold Graham Horton who was on board that fateful journey was my mums first cousin my mother was named after Harold mother Ida she passed in 1991 and Harold name has been added to her headstone he was her only child
I just saw a brief documentary on this vessel, at the end of which Trooper had not been found. It was long enough ago that I had forgotten the name-but when the crew was shown here, I said, “I know that flag!” May their souls rest easy. I am gratified that their resting place is finally known. 💖 ⚓️ 🏴

Wont touch anything on this wreck but will gladly loot other wrecks that contain valuables. People had no problem looting the HMS Ediburgh so don't give me that crap about it being a war grave.

it is a wet grave of the 64 men of the crew of HMS TROOPER
if it was an explosion most likely not, water would have flooded in too quickly if you weren't already gone from the first impact and then you're drowning trying to find a way out in pitch black darkness once the power is gone.
I very much doubt it with a 350kg magnetic mine being set off and I reckon it could have also set off the torpedoes as well which explains how the bow got blown off

Was delighted to hear that Hms Trooper had at last been found. Our Aunt Sarah b, 1925 born in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland, got married to Samuel Fleming in 26 Oct 1942 in Rothesay . Samuel Fleming was born 1921 in Broxburn, West Lothian. He was an Able Seaman on Hms Trooper when the submarine went missing,. His death is recorded on the UK Naval Memorial, in Chatham, Kent . Age 22. Hms Trooper sunk and posted missing off the Island of Leros in the Mediteranean on the 17 th Oct 1943.. A year after he married.. The book Hms Trooper I have in my possesion.. Gone but not forgotten,, fair winds and calm seas.. RIP.. Peter Connor . ex RN.. Sep 1966--to Nov 1973..

How do you lay mines in 230 metres depth water? How were these deep minefields de-activated after the war?
They mostly rot out after a few years.. though some were able fo detonate a couple of decades later ..
The actual mines themselves are attached to a concrete sinker / anchor by a chain that allows the mine to float at the depth you want. The Italian navy was really proficient in this type of warfare.
Many mines broke their chains and floated away appearing in many places.
The T Class were very large ocean going submarines pressed into service in the Mediterranean for which they were unsuitable according to expert naval historians.
You could see them from above.. so yes.. somewhat unsuitable.

On 5 October 1943, the British had information about a new German operation with Leros as a possible target. So the submarine TROOPER was ordered to patrol between Donousa and Ikaria. From there onwards the traces of TROOPER disappeared and when on 17th October, that she was due to return to Beirut, she did not turn up she was considered lost. Initially the research was focused on the minefields of Leros and then Kalymnos and Kos. Ten sea minefields were searched without finding Trooper. On October 14, 1943, an event took place which was the cause of the disorientation of all research in relation to the sinking of the TROOPER. The caique LS8, belonging to the Levant Schooner Flotilla (LSF), had an encounter with a British "T" class submarine that surfaced alongside it in Alinda Bay in Leros. The Captain of the caique Commander Adrian Seligman, described in his book "War in the islands" his encounter with the submarine, which he believed to be HMS TROOPER, as he said he recognised the loud voice of Lieutenant Wraith. This information was adopted as it coincided with the order the British Admiralty had sent to TROOPER, and post-war this version was further strengthened when the minefields in the area became known. Researchers S. Vougidis and K. Thoctarides while studying the logs and reports of British submarines found that the report of the captain of HMS TORBAY contained the incident in Leros - exactly as Seligman described it! It was not the TROOPER but TORBAY submarine that Seligman had seen! So the research was moved to the area where Trooper was patrolling between 6 and 9 October 1943, in the Aegean Sea. The wreck of HMS TROOPER was located in international territorial waters north of Donoussa, at a depth of 253 metres, on one of the five German minefields that the mine-laying ship DRACHE had laid on 26 September 1943. The 84-metre-long TROOPER is cut into three distinct sections, bow, middle section and stern, which confirms a very violent sinking after a mine explosion.The sinking of the submarine was caused by a German EMF mine containing 350 kg of hexane. The result of the explosion was the immediate sinking of the submarine... with the submarine breaking into three pieces.First the bow sank, then the stern and lastly the middle section, which remained on the surface for a few minutes. The bow and stern lie on the seabed in close proximity, while the submarine's conning tower has been detached and lies much further away. Throughout the entire exploration, no intervention or disturbance of any kind was made to the wreck, as it is a wet grave of the 64 men of the crew of HMS TROOPER.
