Studio One: Record & Monitor Buttons are Gone!!! (plus Automation tips)
Did your Record and Monitor Buttons disappear in PreSonus Studio One?
Try just pressing the 'A' key.
If you're curious about what's happening and a couple of short bonus tips about what to do if you've set up fader automation and need to adjust the volume, go ahead and watch the video. It's short.
Thanks to @wyelqo for his great suggestion:
"You can much better automate a volume of a track with VCA fader ! Select "add vca to selected channels" and after add automation to VCA. Actually VCA's were created to serve this purpose. But i have to admit that using the mixtool as you propose, is a less "cramped" solution , because if you use many VCA faders the mixer window becomes a mess."

      Yes, give it a try. It worked for me on low-gain amps. I was trying different Ampire amps and settings and wasn't happy with anything. Then I just started trying different cabinets and found a combo that worked for what I wanted. If you lean toward hi-gain amps, it should work for that too since my inspiration to dig into this came from a Glenn Fricker video and he works in metal.

    What a fantastic video on a thoroughly confusing topic. Studio One has a lot going for it but they so often choose terrible terminology, inconsistent terminology (clip / event anyone?), different terminology to every other daw, different (and utterly random) short cuts to every other daw, terrible defaults... I don't get it. How is any of that "intuitive" or "user friendly"? It makes a really good daw much harder to learn and use properly. You came to the rescue here though. Thanks.

    • @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips

      Thanks Glenn. When Cakewalk went under, Studio One was the second DAW I tried and immediately found editing, especially comping, to be so much easier that I was hooked. I agree about the terminology though... possibly they could use a few of what we used to call "Human Factors" engineers. Anyway, thanks for your kind words and glad I could help. That's why I do these.

      Dale - I'm really glad you asked that question because I learned something new. Prior to Windows 10, users had to manually delete files from or completely empty the Recycle Bin. With Windows 10, Microsoft added "Storage Sense" (see "Storage Settings") which appears to default to deleting Recycle Bin files after 30 days. During upgrades to Windows 10/11, Microsoft correctly left Storage Sense disabled. On my new computer with Windows 11, Storage Sense was enabled, which is fine, but I prefer to delete things myself so I changed the 30 day window to Never. FWIW, if you want to delete a file permanently without sending it to the Recycle Bin just press Shift-Delete. I sometimes do that with large files, like draft music mixdowns or video renders, that I don't want or could easily recreate.

    The fact that a version isn't aware that other versions might share audio files is tremendously stupid. All these options seem more like a fancy (and useless) form of 'Save as', unless I didn't understand them. In Logic, if you save alternate versions they are aware that other versions are sharing audio files and the delete unused files does NOT delete them, as it should be.

    • @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips
      @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll take a look at that. The main thing for me was realizing that the unchecked option really is a snapshot. Under that condition, I would expect the Remove Unused Files option to ignore earlier snapshots. For alternate versions, I can see where keeping a DB of used files across several versions would be helpful, but, on a PC, I can imagine people doing backdoor operations that could corrupt the DB. Yeah, I'd have to find someone who knows the thought process behind those design choices.

    how is this different from using groups and visibility, i keep all my buses up next to main, then use groups and visibility to show hide mixer channels, buses always stay up to the right

    • @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips
      @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. By "groups" I suspect you mean folders; grouping tracks is a different feature than folders, it allows changes on one track to be replicated on the others in the group. If I can ever get to a point where I get all my tracks mixed into buses and then can mix at the bus level without revisiting the tracks, then your suggestion would work fine. What happens to me, and I suspect others, is that while mixing at the bus level there's a need to revisit a track, even if it's it just to check settings. That results in scrolling back and forth between the tracks on the left and the buses on the right. For me, it's a lot easier to have the bus folders. Then, when mixing at the bus level I can have the folders closed, but if I need to quickly check a track I can open it right there from the bus channel, check or change as needed and reclose the folder. The downside I can imagine is if I want to see all my tracks and buses at the same time; then the buses would be intermingled with the tracks instead of all to the right. Anyway, your method is perfectly fine, but maybe give bus folders a try and see what you think.

    • @shatteredsquare
      @shatteredsquare ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips that makes sense, you can control visibility at the source while adjusting the individual track and then close it from the same spot. I use groups, on the left side, and uncheck everything except visibility, so buses always stay up next to main (buses holding most of the processing), and show/hide groups to show hide all the mixer channels and tracks simultaneously, I still have to keep going to the left to change group visibility but I don't have to scroll through all the tracks. bus folders are cool but I'd get mad confused with buses all scattered through the whole track list

    This is great! First video I’ve seen of yours: Would have loved this 10-15 years ago before I wasted I don’t know how much time watching TH-cam videos and rearing forums back in the day everyone would just tell you, “Use your ears!”. Lol. I’ve actually thought about developing a compressor plug-in that had a visualizer that really showed you where and how your signal was behind affected at each transient, but just never set aside the time. Nowadays, I’m pretty familiar with the ends and outs of it, although especially with some of these plugins modeled after old analog gear that don’t have a great UI or clear indicator ranges on the settings, I still can second guess myself if something feels off. Haha. So even now, this type of thing is very useful. Good job.

    • @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips
      @jhughsPresonusStudioOneTips 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Yeah, something about compressors is intimidating, or seems harder than it is. Part of it is poor explanations, which initially resulted in me thinking attack and release where how long it took the compressor to turn full on or full off after passing a threshold; whereas, really it's a more of a slope between full on and full off. And you're right, the classic "Use your ears" doesn't help when you're not sure what you're hearing or supposed to be listening for. First you have to understand WHAT you're hearing THEN you can use your ears. Thanks again.

    You probably should use your hearing in relation to compression

      You're right, your ears should always be the final judge. The purpose of this video is to help beginners get beyond the mystery and intimidation of compressors. Even though many beginners may understand what threshold, attack & release are, the challenge is in understanding what a 10ms attack vs. a 20ms setting do in relation to, for example, a snare hit. My hope is that this video encourages new users to play with their DAW in general, and in particular play with a compressor and use their eyes to help them understand what they are hearing as they experiment with different settings. Then, when mixing using their ears only, they'll have a better sense of what to listen for when adjusting a compressor.
