Clifftop 2024 Highlight Reel
8/5/2024 -
Just back from Clifftop. Like most of us that attend, this festival has become the highlight of the year.
Yep. I came back with way more footage that I can use in one show. So here’s the first reel. When time allows, pour yourself a refreshing drink, open this video full screen, turn it up and enjoy the memories of time well-spent among friends and loved ones.
Just a heads up, my book about Clifftop is available on Amazon. It's titled Old-time Conversations: Finding Health, Happiness and Community Through Traditional Music. Check it out if you'd like to learn more about Traditional Music and the Community that surrounds it. Great fun that's good for you. :)
Thank you for being a part of this astonishing community and this magnificent event held in this most extraordinary place. If there is a heaven on earth, this is it.
Love to you all.
Craig
PS - When you watch, don’t miss the delight in the faces of the players, those watching and the dances of the fingers, bows and folks in the back. This is what music does to and for people.

Clifftop 2023 - Jason Cade & Howard Rains - Saline County
มุมมอง 4.7Kปีที่แล้ว
This little gem of a jam was inadvertently left out of the Clifftop 2023 Highlight Reel. It's Jason Cade, Howard Rains and some other (most excellent!) players doing a fine number on Saline County... a tune Jason recalls being taught him by the late Art Rosenbaum. Rather than make up a Second Reel, here 'tiz. I may add a few more one-offs to the web this way. Enjoy! Craig

8/6/2023 - Dear friends in music, thank you for another truly magnificent mountaintop experience. Like most of you, Clifftop has become the highlight of my year. As usual, I came back with way more footage that I can use in one show. So here’s reel number one. Clifftop 2022

8/9/2022 - Hello, Clifftop lovers! Here’s my first film of Clifftop 2022. I arrived early this year to experience the people and the night before the “land grab.” Got some fun memories of that event. Figured out it's a great way to meet new friends that can steer you to jams and such once the regular crowd arrives. The number of attendees was lower than anticipated this year, mostly due to the ...
Clifftop 2022 - Fo Da Fun Folks
มุมมอง 16K2 ปีที่แล้ว
8/7/2022 The Fo Da Fun Folks, named for a section of the campground (Fo Da is short for Fort Davis) had such an incredible jam, it warranted its own post! Don’t just watch this once, watch it a couple of times. There’s lots of “Traditional Music Community“ good happenin' here. First, they’re all circled up and smiling. They’re anticipating a good time. This group especially enjoys playing with ...

It's always fun to get the gang back together. But this time there was another reason. Which of the 3 banjos sound the best? We all put them to the test. You be the judge. :)

Clifftop 2020 - Road to Clifftop 2021
มุมมอง 11K4 ปีที่แล้ว
I was feeling melancholy about Clifftop being cancelled for 2020. So I decided to watch some footage from last year's highlight reels to cheer me up. I found a version of Road to Malvern that brings me both joy and hope. My hope is that it does the same for you! Thank you Roger Netherton (fiddle), Rachel Eddy (Guitar), Brian Slattery (banjo) and Charlie Shaw (bass)! See you all in 2021! More - ...

8/5/19 Dear Clifftop friends The music was exceptional this year. I tried to condense 4 hours of footage into a 12 minute "highlight reel" but failed miserably. So here's a 39 minute sampling of the sounds of Clifftop 2019. Enjoy! Craig Evans Oh, turn it up loud and play full screen. :)

PXWX70 Wonky Sound
มุมมอง 9757 ปีที่แล้ว
My Sony PXWX70s are not doing me any audio favors. I record loud, often screechy music from fiddles, banjo and hammer dulcimers played by my subjects (wired with Sennheiser ew100s). More often than not, the frequencies appear to "shock" my camera's audio to where it produces the "warbly/digital soup" you hear in these 4 samples (of music and voice). Is there a MENU adjustment I can make that wi...

Those that study Traditional music - its Community and history - are equally as interesting and entertaining as the Old-time Performers! Here are a couple of short excerpts from French Canadian historian (teacher and performer), Donna Hebert and the fellow that wrote the book on the history of Country Music, Dr. Bill Malone. This DVD will be out around Christmas '17. More at: www.oldtimeconvers...

i really want to go.. im a twenty year old african girl from england who fell in love with traditional american string music, i just love how music seems to bring everyone together so much ! i'm definitely considering travelling to see the festival next year...
Sounds right for you. Hope you come. :)
So thankful for your uploads over the years! It’s inspired me to go from old time fan to finally deciding to pick up guitar a few months ago. Anyone have any good chord progressions to maybe one day pick around some old time?
I always look forward to these, Craig! Thank you and good seeing you this year!
Nice seeing you, too, Cliff!
Back to listen again, this entire video is absolutely incredible!
Anyone know the name of the tune--or anything about the tune or the players--from 11:55 - 14:27? Love that tune, and the playing is so very fine.
I can get you part-way there. The band is called the Onlies. You might have to start listening to their recordings. Pretty sure you’ll find it there.
Tune is Susan's Gone by Emma Lee Dickerson
i want to visit so bad. Maybe next year!
I have not seen so many fiddlers for years. Kansas blue
Thanks for posting from the West coast! What is the song they're playing at the 30 minute mark? thx
It’s a beautiful, very well played version of Coleman’s March.
@@craigevans4010 Thanks!
@craigevans4010 yes, and my fiddle is tuned to DDAD. Thank you for capturing this
thx Craig! awesome e footage tapping along 🎉
Hateful Anti- Christian video creator. If you go aginst God and nature your gonna get a hot one on judgment day buddy.
I did not see anyone getting around on any mobility scooters, are the allowed???
I also did not see any this year. Yes, they are allowed. There is a banjo player in a wheelchair that frequently attends but he didn’t come this year.
I hope to be there next year.
Nice
Thanks so much for bringing us there! Such gorgeous harmony - any idea of the tune 31 minutes in, sounds like "We don't want the mvp?"
We don't want the MVP. a Joe Troop original!
@@L-nx5jp Awesome, thanks for the scoop! I'll be diving into more Joe Troop tunes from here.
Lot of good tunes. What's the one at 10:38?
Grub Springs
loved this!
Very, very good!! A lot of good music clips and little talk. Appreciate the long music clips that are long enough to get most of the tune. I liked and subscribed.
I'll add my thanks also to Craig..................
I would say a lot of the musicians I'm watching here have celtic blood running in their veins..Great job on the film,, Good luck from over the pond, Ireland..
Wonderful! Thank you Craig! 🎻🪕
Glad we finally met!
Craig thanks so much ! wonderful
You’re welcome, Arnie. You are missed!
Great!
Thanks Craig Evans, for providing all of this fun music and frolic for us folks at home!
Incredible! thanks for the vid
Wanna Go there!!
A neighbor asked if I was going to be home all week so that I could watch for packages on her porch. I went to TH-cam looking for a Clifftop video that I could share with her to explain why I just might not be here. Snagged this one, and the first person interviewed in line is someone I jam with on Friday nights in Floyd va, and the second person in line has been my teacher for classes at the Augusta workshops a couple of times...... and when I finished the note to my neighbor I looked up at the video still playing in the background, and the mandolin player in one particular Jam was another one of my teachers from yet another music camp. I should get to clifftop more often.
23.30 amazing acapella/choral
When can I go to this and where is it?
It’s called the southern Appalachian string band music festival. Google it to learn more. It’s coming up the end of July.
@@craigevans4010 I will, end of July I have an event but will definitely like to attend some time
Absolutely amazing. Love your women, love your sisters, mothers and grandmothers. This is incredible!
Kansas City Reel is real naughtical
Amazing video! I d really love to make it there sometime. Can anyone please tell me the name of the tune that starts at 15:15? What an amazing tune...
Thanks!
Where is clifftop located?
West Virginia. Google Appalachian String Band Music Festival
I attended a bagpipes convention in Scotland some years ago. I swear those bagpipes were still ringing in my ears a week later. It must be the same for the good folks at Clifftop. I envy them 😊
Anybody know what the first tune on this video is called? Its amazing . Cant figure out the end of the first part though!!
I see my band leader Denise Warren playing her mandolin here!
Love seeing our younger folks keeping our music alive.
I can't believe I haven't watched this till now! What a treat. First Clifftop I've missed in almost twenty years, but it looks like y'all did okay without me. Thank you so much, Craig, for catching the whole thing. It did my heart good to hear Chris singing the Doodle Bug Song!
Hope to see you this year. :)
Love to know where these lyrics came from...
Wow!! Thanks for sharing!! Serious jamin! Just might have make the trip this year!
Anyone know the tune at 43:20?
Liberty. Thomas Jefferson’s favorite tune.
Not sure how much traffic this video gets these days, but I'd love to know the name of the tune starting at 22:14 if anyone knows it
Ootpik waltz.
Glad to see Michael Starkey on banjo at Clifftop - great player and great guy.
Aaaah, great job!! Very talented! And I love your vintage hats! At least one Stetson OR-might be two, or maybe a Strat? My favorite is the dark brown with lighter brown band. A 3X Sovereign Mode Edge, maybe?
Keen eye! Right on the Stetsons and a Stevens. But I believe the brownie was a Knox.
Found this one! Awesome job! All of you are great on each axe! Seems at least one of you shoulda been wearin a Stetson Flagship!
Fiddln Ryn Riley at time stamp 31:41
14:41 Nice quilt!
It sure beats Lollapalooza!
12:35 great tune, anyone know the name of it? Great video overall. On my bucket list to get there one year 😊
