Electroforming a praying mantis tips and tricks
This is a “how to” guide for electroforming a praying mantis. These were real praying mantises that were lovingly raised and had a long life. They died of old age, and were donated to me to memorialize. Before I started shooting this video, I had pinned and dried them. (There are searchable videos on how to do this). The above procedure would be how I would approach electroforming any bug. Hope it helps, and please like and subscribe if you like my videos. Part 3:3 Electroforming acorns: patina techniques and results
มุมมอง 2.6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
this is a VERY long video, but I wanted to show the different patina techniques I utilized in changing the colour of the acorns to create 6 different wine charm looks. For those of you die hard electroformers, I hope some techniques help. For those who cant get through 45 minutes of video (I don't blame you) : below is a time stamp with each technique if you are familiar with it and want to ski...

This goes over the steps required to make something like a hornet/ piece of hive jewelry worthy. here the hornets are modified and placed on hives for their final coat of copper. shows Bonding techniques, modifying imperfections.
Scavenging a large hornet nest
มุมมอง 1914 ปีที่แล้ว
Ever wonder where electroformers get their subjects? Most of us practice ethical scavenging- organics are found in nature after the creature has already expired. This is me attempting to find some hornets to electroform, from an abandoned bald faced hornet nest. If you like this video, please like or follow me on Instagram at @rareearthdesigns Thanks!
Preparing hornets for electroforming
มุมมอง 1.7K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows me getting hornets (I call them wasps interchangeably, but they are actually bald faced hornets, to be specific) prepped for electroforming. These will eventually be turned into necklaces. Hi Thomas, I always increase my amps as the plate spreads over my piece. the way my bath is set up, if I go over about .4 volts, my amperage is too high, so i depend on that to tell me how my piece is doing. there are calculations that I can go over in another video, but that is usually my go- to calculation.

    • @rareearthdesignselectrofor6126
      @rareearthdesignselectrofor6126 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave 24v thanks! To be honest, I am not sure- it may have been the ambient temperature in the room- Bit the eforming solution has also been running 24/7 for about 8 months, when this was done. The first few weeks the solution wasn’t giving me shiny, but it started doing so, and has been ever since- until recently- I’ve made and mixed new solution and it’s again not giving me shiny. I’m hoping a few weeks from now I’ll get my shiny back.

    • @EssexSilvering
      @EssexSilvering 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rareearthdesignselectrofor6126 .... Thanks for your reply, I am using Jason Welsh's formula's including the conductive paint like you are. He has a homemade brightner on his page for purchase so will be trying that out this week when it arrives. I just refuse to buy brighteners as I'm into chemistry and prefer to make my own.

    • @rareearthdesignselectrofor6126
      @rareearthdesignselectrofor6126 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave 24v I’ve been adding propylene glycol to mine along with commercial brightener and it makes a really strong smooth plate. My bath in my colder room is now making a satiny strong plate that polishes up Perfectly shiny in seconds, so it’s likely starting to equalize. An electro polishing solution is cheap and can be used instead, but it’s another step, that sometimes I just don’t have time for, so I’m content with the commercial one for now ;)
