Forgotten Spas of Yorkshire
มุมมอง 3913 ปีที่แล้ว
We've all heard of Harrogate, Ilkley and Scarborough - but what about Slaithwaite, Askern or Wetherby? They've all had them, but only shone brightly for a very short time - mostly 1820-1890 and then disappeared. Others like Ripon came on far too late 1904/1905 and places like Boston Spa were left behind by the age of steam - although that mode of transport didn't help Goathland (North York Moor...

Railway Stations of Yorkshire
มุมมอง 6393 ปีที่แล้ว
The Leeds-Selby line was the first to be built in Yorkshire in 1834 - and some of the original station can still be seen in Selby (more of it in our Selby film). Most of the railways were centred on York, as George Hudson, "The Railway King", mayor of York, saw that it would be a great boon to the city - indeed, the medieval wall was breeched to allow it in. Although today's station, one of Bri...

Continuing the story of Yorkshire pottery - this tome from the Swinton / Rockingham pottery, to pottery from the Castleford area and then to the glazed ceramic ware of Burmantofts Pottery (Leeds) and then the mass produced pottery symbolic of the 1970s made at Hornsea. Hello from the source at Oughtershaw Beck!
My grannies granddad was filey brig guide about 1900. Robert Maulson. My great grandad with wife are both buried in St Oswalds. George Jenkinson Mainprize and Rachel Jenkinson
Enjoyed watching and listening to this video. I recall many happy days tripping up the canal seeing the tom puddings with my Dad or Uncle on their barges in the early 60's.Loading at the various pits coal to discharge at the Gashouse Hull or Earles Cement factory. Happy days. I remember learning to steer with a chain linkage system then going to sea and using various systems that didn't require any real muscle power.
What's the name of the marina with brown bridges
great
👏👏👏 ☀️ 🏴 ❤️

You can't sell your Gansey's, but maybe you could sell the skill of making them? Be a great idea to write these patterns down too.
My great grandfather was in the 4th Territorial Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI). They arrived in Boulogne, France on 12th April 1915, and the battalion formed around Estaires. On 15th May the formation was renamed as the 148th Brigade, 49th West Riding Division. He fought at the: Battle of Aubers Ridge; Somme Campaign; Battle of Poelcapelle (to one side of Passchendaele); 3rd Battle of Ypres (1st Battle of Passchendaele); Battle of the Lys (sometimes called the 4th Battle of Ypres), and in pursuit into Selle and in the final advance in Picardy. He survived the war. Without a shadow of a doubt the worst battlefield he had ever served on was Passchendaele. He called it hell on earth. A sea of blood, mud, water filled shell holes, rotting stinking corpses and body parts. The name the soldiers gave the Ypres Battles was the meat grinder, because that is what it was. The Ypres Battles consumed hundreds of thousands of men's lives. My great grandfather called it an atrocious and despicable waste of good fine men on both sides. And one should remember that the Yorkshire Regiments did not just have men from Yorkshire.
SHEFFIELD is the 3rd Largest City in England if you know what your talking about has they go on Popularity but in size Sheffield is bigger than Leeds if you look at the squad mile It is also bigger than Manchester City of not greater Manchester but city of plus Sheffield has more people than Manchester to I was born in Manchester but I have been living in Sheffield for the last 38 years I moved here at 10 years old it’s a great city very underrated the steel city of Sheffield is

This is a great film of our lovely town
As a Canadian I find Hornsey Mere amusingly small!
My mum used to call him ‘Jeff Drew it’!😂 he interviewed/filmed me when I was a kid in the late 70s/early 80s at the bottom of our street..😂
The most delightful video taking me up to Top Withens! Thank you and well done.
I lived and worked in Horsforth from 1989 to 1996, and was a regular at the TASC sports club. A wonderful trip down memory lane, thank you.
Georgian Era 1714-1837. Victorian Era 1837-1901. Edwardain Era 1901-1910.
Interesting, but a couple of mistakes - the old railway line is NOT a bridleway, although people (including me!) have been riding on it for years. It is not even a public footpath, but a "permissive path" meaning the landowner has given permission for the public to use it. The pub halfway up the Chimney Bank is the White Horse, not the White House. And don't try booking a room at the Milburn Arms - it has been closed for many years.
cock beck not cod beck on the Towton battlefield - otherwise brilliant presentation
Like farming red tape, they don't care
“Um… Um…. Um…” 👀
West Somerset is 24 miles.
Thank you, I live near Hornsea. Love the East Riding.
Their sacrifice will never be forgotten by the people - but it has been by the Oligarchic Establishment. They seek new sacrifice now - and the end of our free and sovereign country. God bless and never surrender.
And Sunak promised a "bonfire" of EU regs, he lied! Vote ReformUK on 4 July!
Used to attend the grain market at the Corn Exchange every Tuesday. It used to be a vast floor , but they seem to have taken away a lot of floor to expose the basement. I remember that there was only one telephone there, and when someone was called, the caretaker used to walk around with a bell and a small blackboard with his name on it. Tramfare was one penny in those days.
It's The Royal Hall NOT Theatre Royal I was born in Harrogate but moved to the south West in 1990 so a lot has changed since then! I enjoyed the video, brought a lot of memories back :D
Joseph Thackwray was related to my Dad, either my Great Grandad or great great Grandad!
We so lucky to live in this beautiful area and we have walked over most of the area of Ryedale and the moors,we know where to go to avoid the popular hot spots that visitors congregate and spoil the peace and tranquility with cars noisy motorbikes and large walking groups👍🤗Which hostelries to have a meal without having to queue 👍🤗
really sad that the era has gone ....who owns the landing area??
Who is the narrator please
This video brought back memories because I used to visited the area with my late girl-friend who died of cancer in 2018. We walked around Malham Tarn and down Mastiles Lane. We drive past Kilnsey Crag many times on our way to Grassington and other places. Thanks fo making this video. You added and interesting and thoughtful commentary. Thanks for uploading.
One of my favourite walks... Stunning
4:03 You have now entered the twilight zone 😂
must need a license to be able to own that amazing scissor.proudly not made in china.
The light house at Withernsea is not where it is because of erosion. Quite the reverse actually. It was built where it stands because of anticipated erosion that has never happened, hence it is so far in land.
I grew up in Filey and remember the cobbles so well wonderful memories
I prefer the flat cap but I can never find one that doesn’t have a long peak.
Locally it's known it was originally "On Baildon moor Bhat 'at". Ilkley pinched it, they were far too posh. We had many different versions when I was a lad including "Without tha trousers on" & " Where the ducks play football"
Happy memories came flooding back of a beautiful part of Yorkshire. Thank you.
No immigrants...wonderful
I’ve just watched 3 videos on York and this is the first one to give me the information I actually wanted. History, navigation, explanations for what I’ll see. Thank you! I’ll be looking for more of your videos.
A romp in the heather! 😂😂😂
Oh my! Arnold taught me French at school and when he was mayor of knaresborough I was his deputy 😅 I dare say many won’t know that his son Tim was part of the original hit band Simply Red.
The one thing Titus Salt didn't build was a pub. He was a staunch non-drinker.
