That was fun. Thanks. Flips look cold
fun stuff.... like the whoo hoo's. The cat likes it as much as bird videos
hahahaha
Mighty waves, magnificent view. Thnx for sharing
i’ve done that paddle years ago! We surfed the tides there. We dropped into one spot.
Beautiful place. Nice video.
Great session!
Cold!
have you ever rolled under in that situation? before the wave hits?
yes. I know I can dodge big wave by capsizing and roll up afterward
Rock solid rolls!
Great manoeuvrability and bongo slides, good way to start 2025. Best wishes.
Happy New Year
Wow, you get around. Thanks for posting!
Is that a ww kayak out at sea O_o
yes, two paddlers were in WW kayaks, as we originally were planning to do rock gardening
Nice! Be safe!
Good job!
Go Jenny go. Great video. Like seeing the braces
Glad you like it. Thanks for the encouragement too!
lovely video, i'm learning the brace right now myself.
Had to look twice… best wishes
Fun seeing your group out there on Saturday. I'm kinda glad I didn't surf the rips as long as you, since getting back was brutal. Nice video. It captures how it felt out there. There's a porpoise off your bow at 9:37 or so
so much power and confidence! exciting video!
so how did Rebas re-entry go? She had help and back in? looked like a tough place to rescue with the wind, waves, and rocks nearby. great job making it all work!
I was not there so I was not clear how the rescue unfolded. I heard that two paddlers engaged in the rescue, one got the paddle and boat, the other got the swimmer. It took a while for both kayakers to reunited. It was the most difficult place to do a rescue. Anyway, they made it and everyone paddle back safely.
Wow! Heart-stopping during that crossing!
awesome! it's crazy how strong ocean wind and current can be. great job. there is a turning stroke where you make a huge sweep from your rear stern to the bow, then flip the paddle over the bow and continue the sweep hard, and repeat. you can lean into the waves hitting the side of the kayak and help keep from flipping it when doing this stern to bow sweep. Exciting video!!!

Great surfing and bongo slides. You roll is solid! Thnx for sharing.
Looks fun 👍
Good rides on fun looking waves!👍
Go Jenny! That's my old stomping grounds.
Looks fun!
Darn you are doing a lot of kayakimg!! And all types!
Tossed around like a toy.
Yes. First time trying a surf kayak, so took me a bit time to get used to it. Very different than a sea kayak
I saw forward rolls I think! What model kayak?
Chesapeake Light Craft model Matunuck
@@JennyZhang42 neat. A wood kayak.
@@beingaware8542 Yes, a friend built it himself, and lend it to me
Nice braces and rolls!
Intense! 😅
What a fight!
Nice jet ferry!
Nice combat rolls!
We are were all so impressed by the fight you gave this ledge hole!
Wow! This group didn't get your kayak and you back together welll at all. And that guy saying "Are you good?" Lol. No! Im good ( and safe) when im back in my kayak! The group needs to practice some drills to take care of this. Great video! Do you know the back deck roll?
oh, there are feeder eddies on both sides
Ha I came to comment about the bracing too 😊. Already been done up I see. My comment is a little different though... I thought the common thread thru your tip overs was: Upstream lean! Always lean downstream. Water coming towards you won't hold you up. Very nice job with the rolls. I spent most of the '80s on the Kern, some high water - 8k to 10k cfs - but its my favorite Sierra river, low or high flows.
Thanks for the comment. I think it makes sense to me. Lean, edge should work together. Previously when I think about edging, it's always lifting upstream knee, but I never think about I could lean my body downstream (unless surfing on river waves). I applied what you suggested on the river last weekend, I definitely felt some difference.. I somehow flipped downstream once. I think I still need to fine-tune how much I lean downstream
So bony!
Yes, it's LOW flow
It's such a sweet run isn't it
That was awesome!
Nice run!
Hmmm. No brace on the first or second one, no brace on the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh ones. Where is your reactive brace? :) Head in direction of fall, paddle impact, hip snap and recover! Cape Falcon kayak has a great reactive low/high brace video. Maybe you have it and did it 100 times and these are the few times you didn't, I don't know. I neglected true low/ high reactive brace for years and thought a roll was the answer. I was wrong. I finally had to admit to myself I never put the time in to master those braces at a instant reaction level. Now i have, and it made me so much better at all kayaking. Thanks for posting these great videos! It looks like the best week ever!
I don’t think it was a bracing issue-well, maybe partially. The main cause was an edging failure; I didn’t lift or maintain my upstream knee. In these capsized runs, I often entered the waterfalls at the wrong places or angles (usually off-center or descending at an angle rather than straight down). As a result, water piled up on one side of my boat, causing me to flip. Yes, I didn’t brace properly. I remember successfully bracing on a fall in August, but not during this trip. Anyway, these are videos of rolls, so any successful attempts where I avoided capsizing won’t be included! Thanks for the comment!
Just watched my video again after reading your comment. I think most of the time when capsized in this video, my paddle was in the correct side of my boat to brace, so maybe half of the time I did brace / add a paddle stroke on that side. But it didn't work. Half of the time, I just directly went to the roll setup position without attempting to brace or paddle stroke. I know I need to work on stay upright, or recovery brace instead of relying too much on my roll. Since it's always safer and quicker to recover without a roll.
I went to sea kayak surfing yesterday, and used my high brace 5-10 times, did 3 rolls when I didn't want to give up to surf for bracing... I think on the river, it requires much faster reaction to the water. Sea kayak surfing is a bit more predictable and easier to react.
Really interesting about the upstream knee. Now I went back and watched again! Lol. Yes, the river caught the edge sometimes. Good insight. I am looking for the camera to rapidly tilt in the direction of a brace, as its on your helmet, and saw it stay quite level, and i was looking for the falling side blade to whip up into the air and try to get flat on the water before you went under, but it seems that the blade often sinks down in a vertical postion and your head level, when the river catches your edge. But it happens so quickly. Maybe there is no time. You have a great roll and you also have a great feel for the kayak because you know whats up! Makes me want to kayak tomorrow! Im on the East coast though, and no great river like the Kern near me, well the Penobscott but thats class 5 i think...great rolls. Really liked your roll on Powerful Possum. And yes they do happen really fast.
@@beingaware8542 You're right, my blade was often vertical and buried in the water already. So I probably was trying to do one more stroke on that side instead of lift the blade higher on the surface of the water! I will definitely keep it in mind next time
Awesome! so it seems you wanted to get into that eddy with your partner and it that a paddle stroke to swing in there was missed maybe? I'm not a WW paddler, so I'm guessing. looks like great fun! Nice job being patient and rolling up! what roll was your goto?
YES. I missed the eddy both times I ran this rapids. That's why I ended up in the wrong place hitting the goalpost rock
Wow! Crazy hand rolls! I have to learn them. So I have been looking to see if you have the Storm roll?
I don’t . I was very active practicing roll back in 2020, 2021, and learned butterfly and hand rolls. After that I haven’t been able to invest time on purely rolling exploration. In 2023 and 2024 I spent more time on rough ocean, surfing, rock gardening and whiter water kayaking. Then I use my rolls more in real situations instead of pure fun… right now I want to learn storm roll and back deck rolls, but haven’t been able to carve time for it yet
@@JennyZhang42 wow you are nice and busy doing a lot. I like long sea kayak ocean trips as well. Mostly for a a week, but some 3 weeks plus. I have some free time by a lake at the moment. I've just got the storm roll, and I love it. It's so fast, and when your up your allready to paddle. Anyhow, if you get time and try it I think you will like it for both whitewater and suring and touring. Take care! Great channel!
@@beingaware8542 Thanks!
Awesome rolling. I think more concentration on hitting a bit harder hip snap in the middle of your roll on left side.
Thanks! Good eyes. I learned my left side roll as sweep roll, so yes, I didn't have a strong hip snap on the left side. I will work on it.
I just booked a boat ride to East Anacapa, but the terms at checkout said there is no hoist to assist with kayak lifting. However obviously there is a hoist here. Is the website wrong?
Additionally, did you have to let them know advance that you were bringing a kayak, or could you just stow it? The boat website also says no items heavier than 45 lbs
@@alisonkorn5651 Yes, you need to call them and reserve a kayak spot. There is no weight limitation on a kayak.
