Chardonnay | Day 23 of the 2024 Wine Advent Calendar from DrinkinItIn | Wine Basics
This is Day 23 of the 2024 Wine Advent Calendar from DrinkinItIn and we are talking about Chardonnay. Chardonnay is a delicious, medium acid white grape that is grown all over the world.
Chardonnay styles have a big range and can be big and oaky or steely and crisp. I think that is why people often say they don't like Chardonnay, they simply haven't found the right style for them.
The wine featured in this video is from Chablis, a region in Burgundy that is still affordable and makes some to the most beautiful Chardonnays in the world. They don't use oak here so this is one of the steely, crisp versions.
The wine referenced in this video is below:
2022 Sebastien Dampt
Chablis 1er Cru "Les Beugnons"
Burgundy, France

Each day we will discuss a grape, its flavor profile, where it is grown and one wine I know you will love if you see it on store shelves.
Hope you will join us each day for a new video on a different grape to set you up for a festive month of wine!
Cheers!

I never tasted a good Pinot Noir that was not sparkling
Thanks for the note. That is a surprising statement but maybe the grape just isn't for you.
@ maybe it is because I am in Brazil and the good ones maybe just don’t make it to here, I found all that I have tasted being lack of “power” for my taste
Yeah, I've seen the three you dislike often. Glad I didn't buy them, I just had an gut feeling about them. I intend to try the good ones you've mentioned. Thank you. You do realize of course that the cat is trying to take a nap. I wonder what its opinion about all this is.
Thanks for the note. You'll have to report back with your thoughts on any of the wines you try. Cooper was probably annoyed that I decided to film during nap time. But he naps a lot!
I'm with you
Very happy you are!
what's funny is your 3 to avoid are the 3 consumers will see most in the market! marketing budgets over quality wine in the bottle and we wonder why wine sales are down!
Thanks for the note - it is funny how that seems to work :)
Sangiovese you say? Never heard of it. HA! Give me some Monsanto CCR and Caparzo Brunello!
Caparzo Brunello and Rosso are always delicious and such great values.
I will put grenache on my 2025 list to buy. I think I've had some grenache years ago maybe Shatter and I didn't like that. But will try again. Any food pairing ideas?
I wouldn't overthink the food pairing angle as Grenache is pretty versatile - anything from pasta, pizza or burgers to a roasted chicken.
Please tell the female to be quiet. I’m here to hear a man’s opinion.
It’s tough finding a really good PN for under $35. Bread and Butter around $15 is not bad.
Thanks for the note Jim. I tend to agree with the sentiment and probably try too many Pinots to find the good value wines. I tend to always look past Bread and Butter but maybe I'll give it a try.
Here is the playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL2v08aYkVDUfhUAFF9GkshjZ0eEXshEaV.html&si=aQiyIk3sxultI9Op
One time in total wine I found a $7 Riesling from Romania. I was like... I need 6 bottles to get the 10% discount; why the hell not. It had real riesling character. I know riesling is pretty identifiable, but it was dry, and it was honest. Sometimes shopping off countries or off grape varieties in cheap wines is where you get the honest producers making the best wine they can at that cheap of a price.
Thanks for all of the thoughts. We are definitely aligned in finding off the beaten path countries and grapes to try. They don't get many views on the channel when I make videos about them but I am not going to stop. I just bought a Plavac Mali so keep an eye out for that one here soon!
I have been meaning to try this grape. Currently my local Total Wine has 1.
That is about what I would expect. Just keep searching around the Greek section there!
Pinot noir most over rated grape. Yeah yeah some of the burgundy highest bottle cost in the world but so what - several factors involved with that. I'm still technically on Sea Smoke list which I have purchased in the past.
Thanks for the thoughts Chris. I think Pinot Noir has simply grown too big in popularity and there is a big gap between the quality of the everyday wines available and Pinot Noir that you have to spend up for. I find that a lot of time I buy a Pinot and don't feel good about the value I have received. That doesn't mean I'll stop exploring the grape but I have to find more reliable lanes. Sojourn is amazing but the bottles are too expensive for me to acquire it in bunches.
Lirac is not in the Rhone?
It is in the Rhone. That guy in the video made a mistake 😉
Enjoyed it. I currently appreciate cabs from Chile.
Thanks for the note. Chile has come on strong for me lately.
Yep cabernet is pretty much everywhere. Don't think I've ever had a Margaret River cabernet. Lots and lots of Napa and Pauillac tho.
Living the high life with Napa and Pauillac! Australia overall is really growing on me lately - Margaret River is the fave.
Hey! Would you go for a Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi 2015 or 2017?
Thanks for the note! Honestly, you could go either way as Mastroberardino is simply a quality producer. 2015 has a better vintage reputation across Europe than 2017 but it is kinda like splitting hairs. Maybe get both and let me know which is better?!?!
Been a while since Ive had a straight nerelo mascalese. I thought they were fine but I will revisit. Last week I drank a bottle of the Sicilian 7 from Trader Joe. Has nerelo mascalese in it but only 10%. Was a decent wine for <$10.
Thanks for the note Chris. Interesting that Trader Joe's had a Sicilian wine. Was the rest of the blend Nero d'Avola or a combo of others? The TJ's here and in Massachusetts don't sell alcohol otherwise I would ave definitely grabbed a bottle to try.
@@DrinkinItIn 10 Nerello Mascalese. 5 Sangiovese. 23 Merlot. 2 Pinot Noir. 35 Syrah. 10 Cab. 15 Frappato
@@chrismirs5588 Wow, quite a blend and zero Nero!
Allegrini Palazzo della Torre is my go to for corvina. Good value and tastes good. Maybe I should stop writing comments before video is over.
This comment is amazing. Am glad we are aligned.
Assyrtiko is good and under rated. Not a whole lot in DFW.
Thanks for the note Chris. My wife just flew back from DFW last night! I dont get a ton in RI either. Assyrtiko (and Greek wines in general) are still not well distributed, have been hoping for a while that we would see more and more but looks like we will have to keep hoping.
Sea urchins in North America do taste like sewage more often than not. Try the ones in japan or Italy, they are food sweet. I agree with food pairing. Many a time i wasted wine with meals. I should save the wine for after meal at the instant the pairing does not work. Most of the time i enjoy wines on its own. I don’t have much luck getting wines that ppl say “this wine needs food “.
Thanks for all of the thoughts. I don't think I have ever said this wine needs food but I do know what they mean - the wine isn't delicious. I'll keep the urchin tip in mind, maybe it will become less overrated for me.
I don't really align with Suckling, but I appreciate his diversity.
Thanks for the note. That is more or less where I land as well.
Kim Crawford is overrated. I think chicks think Kim is a woman and buy it based on that, but Kim is a dude in this case. Regardless, I prefer Oyster Bay, Villa Maria, and Kono in that price range
Wonder why you don’t have more subscribers. You’re not annoying and quick to the point.
Thanks so much for the note, this is one of my most favorite comments. We are making progress albeit slowly! Hopefully when people find me they hop onboard.
$5 wines can actually be drinkable! I purchased a $4 bottle the other week called River Port cabernet Sauvignon and the first half of the mouthful was smooth and beautiful but unfortunately went very watery, but definitely drinkable!
Thanks for sharing, am glad you found a similar experience with a $4 bottle. It is worth keeping your eyes wide open when shopping for wine.
Lirac is from the Rhone not Bordeaux.
Oh man, I was really off my game with this video. Thanks for pointing out the mishap.
Montes is in Chile
Duh!! Apologies for the flub. Thanks for watching and pointing that out.
For what it's worth, I thought the dialogue was fine! (Comments such as "hard to follow" and "couldn't hear what he said" make me wonder if the subject matter has drawn some viewers who are, shall we say, a bit cantankerous in their old age? Haha!) I've been getting into sherry and port lately. Bought a bottle of this stuff mostly just for the sake of its cultural legacy, but I'm quite pleased with it actually! Exceeded my expectations. Not quite as special as the Dow 2016 LBV I finished off the other day though, that's probably a bottle I'll be replacing...
Thanks for the note and for watching. it always amazes me what people choose to put in a comment, but every comment is good! Most of the world is miserable so not much I can do other than to keep putting videos out there. I feel like there is a place for bottles like the Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry and it certainly lasts a LONG time.
The Josh label is so nice I almost grabbed it. Thanks
Thanks for the note and for watching. The Josh folks know what they are doing when it comes to marketing and design. I just find the wines undrinkable.
I’m a second generation collector and I haven’t heard any respectable critic use the phrase “vintage of the century”. Please correct me if you can but none of the following publications used that phrase: Parker, Vinous, Wine Spectator, The Wine Independent and others. JM Quarin did highlight the 2022: smoothness of 1959, power of 1961, forget 1982! He is intentionally trying to avoid your phrase.
Thanks for the thoughts but I am pretty sure I have seen the term in the Wine Spectator. I also have become less of a fan of 'respectable critics' over the years as they simply don't bring enough value and are exclusionary. Be that as it may, my two favorite respectable critics are Jeb Dunnuck and the folks at Vinous although I am no longer an active subscriber.
@@DrinkinItIn Thank you for your response. I absolutely agree with your assessment of the critics. The only notes that are useful to me are my own, and I am nowhere near as knowledgeable, perceptive, expressive, strict or objective as those pros. I also like to get wine notes from non-wine people. For example, tea drinkers focus on texture and place wines on the broader map than “one of the firmer Pommards”.
@@fruitysalt Agree that even though I am not as consistent, knowledgeable, etc as the critics I think it important for people to get confident with their own tasting. I do use the Top 100 lists to gauge trends and look for ideas. I love your last point, never considered that.
I completely agree with every one these four topics. People really need to be far more chilled about drinking wine. Drinking windows should be chucked out of the window. Who the f**k cares about wine temperature? We kind of get that don't we? My wine is off by 2 degrees for Christ's sake. The perfect wine with food. C'mon, please get over that. Finally, the great vintage. Jesus, we don't all drink left bank Burgundy. Most good wine makers make good stuff every year. WT
Thanks for all of the thoughts. I definitely don't want my red wine right out of the fridge but beyond that it doesn't warrant much conversation. Your last point is very important here as we have never had more quality wine available to drink due to the progression in winemaking and winemakers focusing more and more on quality.
You know not what you speak of!!!
Can you be more specific Ron? What am I off on?
May I suggest the one that slipped your mind is Cremant de Loire?
You may have cracked the code!
Terroir. Really? Pretty sure it’s mostly marketing and would love to see science put it to the test.
Thanks for the note. It is a nebulous term that I don't use because I am not sure how to use it!
I bought some in France and tried to drink it there. But found it horrid. However when I came home it tasted ok.
Thanks for sharing, that is weird. Perhaps the version in France is different than what is exported?
I'm 14
In that case, don't drink.
Thanks, my wine often tries to take my lunch money but i wont be intimidated no more
I haven't eaten lunch in a while 😁
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Damn i gotta try this asap, thanks for the heads up mate, as always 🫶🏻🇮🇹
Thanks for the support. You'll have to report back with your assessment.
I actually have an interview coming up for the Capital Grille as a server. If it’s not too much to ask, could you please give some insight on how service is performed by the waitstaff throughout your dining experience. Feedback would be great! Thank you.
Good luck! The service at the Capital Grille is always great and well orchestrated. I think the things they do the best are: - all team members are very professional and calm. They set the mood of a special experience through that. There are different folks bringing you bread, water as well as food runners. Somehow it always seems to run smoothly. - anticipating your needs, they are really attuned to needing more water, wine, etc. - the staff are very knowledgeable on wine and how to navigate the menu. the best servers there can guide you through lots of options that exist. - we have had a couple of times where the server was trying to take our order quickly and we had to reset him, basically saying we are not in a rush! That is perhaps something to bring up as a behavior that should NOT be part of the experience.
Not sure if this is your first dealing with Last Bottle Wines or not but I have been unhappy with the amount of time it takes to receive my wines. I am still waiting on two bottles of wine that I ordered Sept 18th.
Thanks for the note. I've used them lots over the years but have never really tracked shipment times. I may go in with slow expectations. Also, I tend to buy from them during the marathons and give them some grace on shipping times. Sept 18th order date does seem unacceptable - have you checked in with them to see what is causing the delay?
19 Crimes was for sure horrible. Decoy isn't bad, it needs air. I let sit for like 10-15 minutes my first glass and it very drinkable.
Thanks for all of the thoughts. Good tip on the Decoy - probably could apply that advice to all Cabernet Sauvignon.
Argentina has some nice Carmenere wines. Subtle is a nice word to describe this wine .
Thanks for the note and the kind words.
I love this wine and have made a point of buying it for some time now. However, the last two bottles have had corks that are really hard to get out of the bottle - even with an electronic opener. Hence, i am now likely to pass it by in the future.
Thanks for the note and detailing the experience Marilyn. Are you always buying from the same retailer or has this happened with purchases from different spots?
Great information and well presented. I’ve tried the Palazzo Della Torre to my great delight. Seems like Italian wine just begs to be paired with its own cuisine. Cheers!
