Things I’m not afraid to admit as a 14 year old”veteran” teacher: 1. I don’t have my own kids and never will. I love working with them, but it’s just not in the cards and I’m ok with that - it makes me appreciate the kids I do have in my life even more. 2. Even though some look at me as an expert in my field, there are times when I feel like I still have a LOT to learn, and don’t know what I’m doing. 3. I’m a child of immigrants and grew up poor. Although I had a hard time growing up, I feel like it’s really helped inform my teaching and help me understand where many of my kiddos are coming from. 4. I became a teacher to be the caring adult in the classroom I never had. I was bullied and picked on all throughout Grade and High School, and vowed to be in the corner of any kid who needed me. 5. I hate staff meetings that could have been an email and won’t pretend to enjoy them. Give me something useful or constructive and I’ll bite, otherwise I feel like it’s a waste of my time. 6. Teaching during the Pandemic nearly broke me and it still haunts me to today. TBH I don’t know that I could survive going through it again… 7. I HATE ICE BREAKERS! Does anyone REALLY enjoy them? Can we make them go away? Please? 8. I absolutely LOVE being a teacher and couldn’t see myself doing anything else but omg the bureaucracy and politics sometimes makes me question it. 9. Summers off are great, but it’s time earned and deserved and wish people would stop using it as the basis for all arguments against us. 10. I AM SO TIRED. Like all the time. I can go on, but I’ll stop there. How about you teacher / educator friends? What’s on your list!?
