I have been on Wrangell Island three times in my life. Last time was in 1985. I am the administrator of the Estate of the Hon. Ralph Lomen who was the last of the Lomen Brothers of Nome, Alaska. The Lomen Brothers purchased Wrangell Island from Stefansson on 1 April 1924 (over a century ago). Between 12 August 1881 - 29 July 1901 it was alternatively known as New Columbia Land. The name Wrangell's Land which was coined by Chasles Francis Hall. It was on 13 September 1871, Greenland was taken formal possession of by a land party headed by Charles Francis Hall from the USS Polaris in the name of G-d, Potus, and SecNav at Thank God Harbor. Then on 12 August 1881, a landing party from Thomas Corwin headed by 3rd Lt. William Edward Reynolds, USRM took formal possession of New Columbia Land
