Introducing ABB's ACH580 UL Type 4X HVACR Drive
ABB's HVACR-specific ACH580 UL Type 4X drive is designed for use in extreme environments. Designed for operation in rain, heat, cold, salt spray, dust and other extreme environments, this drive is fully sealed, providing protection against external elements. Typical applications for this package include rooftop air handling units, cooling towers, exterior exhaust fans, outdoor pump skids and mo...
VFD multiple listings
Multiple listings (i.e. multiple ratings) allows you to re-rate a VFD, such as the ACH580, to a lower rating. This lower rating may allow for smaller upstream electrical infrastructure (wire, breaker, fuses, gear, etc). The multiple listing capability also allows a larger VFD to be installed in place of an existing smaller VFD, while maintaining NEC compliance without the need to increase the i...
Cooling tower with ABB ACH580 controls
In the effort to improve building energy efficiency, cooling tower operation and control can be optimized using Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to modulate the cooling tower fans. Not only that, the condenser water loop (temperature sensors, bypass valves, fill valves) can be controlled directly from the drives as well. Analog and digital inputs, outputs, safeties, PID loops and network commun...
BAS BMS mapping to ABB ACH580 VFDs
More and more building automation systems (BAS) look to collect data from devices such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) or even control drives over a communications network rather than the traditional hardwire connections. To do this properly so end users have access to the correct points or trend accurate data, discovering the most useful points in a drive will further increase the energy s...
ACH580 and E Clipse underload detection
With no additional hardware, VFDs can sense a loss of load a broken belt, broken coupling, dead heading, and other loss-of-flow scenarios in fan and pump applications. Configuring the drive to monitor Torque is more reliable than monitoring current. For bypass packages, the E-Clipse bypass can also monitor for these conditions. This presentation reviews various loss of load conditions, current ...

ABB ACH580 VFD Demystifying Ultra Low Harmonic Drive Operation
A brief overview of harmonics and a look at how a standard VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) creates harmonics on the power line. Using the ABB ACH580-01 standard 6-pulse VFD as a starting point and leading into the ACH580-31 Ultra-Low Harmonic Drive (ULH) with its Active Front End (AFE), the theory of operation is explained. Finally, a simplified explanation as to how the AFE can transfer power f...
HOA status via Relay Output on ACH580
Provide a dry contact status output to your BAS when the ACH580 has been locally set to Hand instead of Auto. This notification can help prevent overrides where the drive is running a constant speed using excess energy or preventing a process from reaching setpoint. Great review! Even though I did not follow every step on a first watch it was great to have the concepts spelled out in simple terms I could at least grasp the idea of. I've never heard of a 6-pulse drive gulping current, but I see that is exactly what it does. The take-away from this video plus conversation with you today is that the ULH (ACH580-31) IGBT rectifier drive with built in (HGL) low capacitance filter is probably what we should be specifying on future projects. Plus, for a project where we already have the ACH589-01 and need to add a generator, we can add the TCI HGL filter in it's own enclosure prevent the generator from being oversized due to harmonics. And I will have to watch this again so the concepts sink in a little better!

    AI2 cannot be Setpoint if AI2 is Feedback. Dylan is correct. Stan is ?

    • @StanWeaverCo

      AI2 is the feedback from the process like temp/pressure. You set the set point in the drive itself as to what you want that feedback to maintain like 50psi the drive will ramp up and down to maintain the feedback on AI2.

    at 3:30 you use AI2 as the feedback source input then at 4:04 you set the setpoint source at AI2 as well. Is that right, or would you use another input as the setpoint source?

    • @StanWeaverCo

      @@briancollamer6384 You set that in the PID control under setpoint. It shows that at 3:50. You already told the drive where to look for the for the feedback 2:50. If you wanted to you could set that to AI1 but the drive comes default to look at AI2 as a PID loop.

    • @dylanharasty

      Is the AI2 feedback signal not just telling the drive the current temp of whatever its trying to control ? When you set the setpoint source from constant to an AI wouldn't that be wired to a separate input from another source telling the drive what it should be trying to maintain?

    • @StanWeaverCo

      @@dylanharasty What is connected to the AI's is the actual temp/pressure of the system IE feedback. You set the actual setpoint in the drive.
