Lovely sound those English Electric engines. Used to have these pass me on the track when I worked Pway at London Bridge, little did I know at the time that I would end up signalling them. In fact be fore I retired, one of my last signalled Chater Trains was the Hastings DEMU when it did all the London Termini not long ago.

DR9908 is a S&C Inpection MPV. Basicalling it is a Multiple Purpose Vehicle loaded with several below solebar video cameras. Its main purpose is to Patrol S&C (Switch & Crossings/pointwork). I used to signal this ( or one like it) in Cannon Street/Charing Cross/London Bridge late evening near close of service. It had to be signalled over every set of points set in reverse and normal positions. We had set plans to follow to ensure that all point work was "patrolled"/traversed in each position by this vehicle. The Signaller was often left alone to fit the train in around the train service, one because it ran smoother, and two because the Signaller could do it quicker (often by many hours) than following the plan verbatum.

Lowram Grinder. These are by far the noisiest trains on Network Rail and that is when in idle mode, even worse when grinding. They often stable one at Hitchin. When it is turned on and preparing to go out at night, it sounds not disimilar to a passenger jet airliner. Great train despite the noise. Great to watch when grinding at night.
