And they'll say I'm not Black American, I'm Jamaican. At least some of them. Some will say I roll with Black Americans others not so much. So if you're Bajan, Bahamian, from St. Vincent or wherever, you can sometimes have people with a strong identification. I think those of us into music know that many Latinos look like sometimes African or a mix of mostly Black African. Even some Black Americans look like a mix but we have this one drop thing going on. Of course in sports as well. TV, nah, not so much That's why Lin Manuel Miranda got heat for his Washington Heights depiction of not enough darker skin Latinos in it. And it gets complicated. I watch a show like "The Diplomat," made after this video was made, and a lot of prominent people on the show are Black. I see a two Black Supreme court justices in the USA. I see Black television shows that are sometimes getting high ratings. But then there are the stereotypes that do definitely exist in real life that are highlighted. But Black people do have some clout in the sports world and entertainment world and in some respects, politics and law. But is that ownership or representation to keep us from revolting too much. And Black Americans, at least some, do see themselves separate from Black Caribbeans and Africans. And vice versa. It gets complex. But as you said, if the ruling folks want to separate, lets educate ourselves and not be puppets. Let's assert ourselves. I want Black Latinos to be proud of who they are and a big part of that is where they are from. I like that the culture retains a good amount of African influence, maybe more than in the USA except for Gulla Geechee people. Good job, brotha.

You hit all of the important points as to why some Latinos don't acknowledge African roots. And television is a perfect example - if you watch telenovelas, all of the leads are white, the Indigenous person is typically not smart and lacks common sense. It's not said, but society does imply through these channels and who gets hired for certain jobs that there is a hierarchy when it comes to race. In some countries there is progress in acknowledging history, culture, and changing ideas that are not helping anyone. It's not surprising that people's brains will do psychological twists in their own mind to not see in themselves what society is messaging as a negative trait, even if made up or invented by society, we after all want to belong and feel accepted.
