swing and turn jubilee
another favorite folk tune of mine. jean ritchie first made it famous when she recorded it 1952 - apparently it was a “gamesong” sung to accompany set dancing :)
I found a discussion thread on an online forum from 2001 where someone was asking about the origin of the tune, and jean herself answered ! I’m linking it here if any other nerds wanna check it out, very sweet response to read. mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=31807#google_vignette
I also wanna shout out the group The A’s who recorded a reaaaally pretty version recently: th-cam.com/video/4dQTKC2kBmA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Q3i7JzierzynagT5
So the first 3 verses here are a hat tip to history, and the rest of the song is kind of a meandering mediation into the future. Here be the lyrics, 3 of the trad verses and then my own (with honorable mentions to the city of Chicago of course)
All out on the old railroad
All out on the sea
All out on the old railroad
Far as the eye can see
Swing and turn jubilee
Live and learn jubilee
Hardest work I ever done
Was working on a farm
Easiest work I ever done
Was rolling in your arms
Swing and turn jubilee
Live and learn Jubilee
If I had no horse to ride
You might find me crawling
Up and down Chicago town
Looking for my darling
Swing and turn jubilee
Live and learn jubilee
There’s a big old storm a brewin
and I bet you’ve felt it too
crack a window and open the door
i wanna feel that storm blow through
There’s a fire on the radio
there’s a hurricane on TV
if there’s a war somewhere out there
that means there’s a war somewhere in me
I could spend 1000 hours
with a song or a river or a tree,
but I won’t wait around for a politician
to set my spirit free
My freedom is a gentleman
in velvet dungarees
he’s spinning right down michigan avenue
holding out a hand to me
I met this gal, called revolution
at a friend of a friends party.
next day I woke up in her bed
with a note on the pillow next to me, it said -
If this old song could speak its mind
and tell us it’s memories
i think it’d say now cheer up child
and get up on your feet

hey out there. hope you're finding your way through time & space today. i just crossed the sea! spent the past 6 weeks following some musical, ancestral, and friendship threads to Ireland, England & Wales. this tune has been my sidekick through the landing back home process. I started figuring out an arrangement on my last night in the UK, in a valley, in a field, in a tent. and now here I am p...
The Cuckoo - appalachian folk song

On this fourth day of July, here’s The Cuckoo from my kitchen. One of my all time favorite English turned Appalachian folk songs. In my ears & heart, this is a freedom song through & through. 🔔 This arrangement is inspired by Rising Appalachia’s version, I especially love the fiddle part, so here’s me attempting to mouth-music it :) & i added my own last verse because i felt like there was a li...

None But Shining Hours - the books

My take on this books song using a boss 505 looper :) Discovered shining hours the other day while listening through the books album Lost and Safe (which oh my stars is awesome) and I haven't stopped singing it since. following the line of the tide reclining living on the fat of the sweet sun shining drawing on the times aligning walking on the long horizon there's a little black spot in the sk...
An Buachaillín Bán - live vocal looper & violin
มุมมอง 2106 หลายเดือนก่อน
Any Gaelic speakers out there wanna help me with my pronunciation? :) One of the most beautiful songs I know. During British colonial occupation of Ireland, when speaking Gaelic was against the law, this love song served as a symbol of resistance and resilience. The "fair haired boy" described and longed for in the song is code for the land of Ireland herself. It's a love song to the spirit of ...

The great song tenderly sung❤
This is the best version I ever ever heard of this song
I liked how you sang the banjo, it turned out very organically, as if the main melody received space and development❤
