I remember when I woke up at exactly 4:31 that morning. I knew something was wrong and then the shaking started. I got up and started struggling to get into the doorway of my room and started screaming for my mom and dad. The house was totally turned upside down. To this day I still am terrified of earthquakes.

I was a Student at Cal State Northridge. When it first happened. They said it was 7.2 magnitude. Then the following day. They changed it to a 7.0. Then a 6.9 and so on. Kinda strange. It bounced my house off the foundation and threw my girlfriend and I around the room. My neighborhood was wrecked. It was really bad and they rarely bring it up these days. It's 30 years later and we are so do for another big one. Be prepared and don't panic when it happens.

i was living in Simi Valley when this happened. it's only 20 minutes from northridge. needless to say, damage there was severe. i was in a king size bed with my mom and sister at the time. i never dozed off. i laid there, tossing and turning, while staring at the ceiling much of the time. so i was wide awake when it happened. it was loud, the house shook quite violently, i honestly thought it was going to collapse. i seriously thought i was going to die. when the shaking stopped, my dad came into the room. i finally pulled the blanket over my head to see what happened. literally everything was on the floor. our neighbor came and knocked on our door shortly after. to see if we were ok. as we went outside, people were setting up tents on their lawns because the houses were too badly damaged. some cars even bounced down the driveway and ended up in the streets. so they had to bring them back up into the driveway. Simi Valley's damage was severe. there was a pick n save and a sears right next to each other on tapo street. the roofs on both buildings completely collapsed, leaving giant holes which were totally visible from the street. they were torn down eventually. we also went into the brunswick bowling alley where my grandmother worked at the time. the building had cracks outside, and the entire ventilation system completely collapsed. it broke out of the ceiling and fell out onto the bowling lanes, and some of it was still dangling from the ceiling. you couldn't really drive anywhere because the roads were uneven, countless trees, powerlines, and street lights had fallen over. i was only 8 at the time so this was my first earthquake ever. hell of a way to pop the cherry.

My grandparents and uncle lived in a mobile home park in northridge when the earthquake happened. They survived but it was an absolute mess. The modular home they lived in shifted and moved and so much inside their home was destroyed. The irony was that the deck my dad built around their home didn’t budge. It became a family joke that my dad’s carpentry skills could withstand California earthquakes.

Everyone talks about Northridge like it's a city. This video even calls it "The City of Northridge". It's just a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles. Back when this happened, it took the lame national media 3 or 4 days before they finally started referring to the quake as having hit "Los Angeles." Talk about stupid media people, geez!

I remember that day!!! I was visiting friends in Santa Barbara and at dinner the night before we had joked that it would suck to have a really bad earthquake in the morning that knocked out electricity bc we wouldn’t have coffee. We did loose electricity and there was no coffee bt we didn’t get it near as bad as they did down south. The recurrent aftershocks made me pack up and go back to Santa Cruz. I’ll never forget that day!!

I lived about 5 miles from the epicenter. It felt never ending. All I heard was crash boom over and over. Ran to my baby and just held on for dear life. Our house moved off the foundation about a foot and everything in the kitchen was on the floor as well as our windows and sliding glass door exploded out. Scariest thing I’ve ever been through to this day.

The epicenter was actually in Reseda , not Northridge but they call it the Northridge quake because Northridge had the most deaths related mainly an apartment building that collapsed and killed 16 people and the damage to the Northridge hospital.

I lived in Sunland/Tujunga. It was about 14 miles from Northridge. It was short but violent and loud. I honestly thought the house was collapsing. I heard that parts of various freeways collapsed. The power grid went down. I went to a friend's house. Someone had a portable radio, and we listened to the reports of the damage. For years, I purposely made sure that my car wasn't under an underpass of a freeway while in traffic.

I was living in L.B. in an old wood frame 2 story apt. building. It really shook and swayed. I turned on the tv after and it took HOURS before any station mentioned the quake. Shame on the lack of emergency information. Just a week ago I got an alert on my tablet about the N. California quake an hour after it happened. How times have changed.

Northridge is not a city. It is a legal part of Los Angeles (like most of the San Fernando Valley) and yet is not the 'City of Los Angeles'. They share many of the same departments and services; Fire, police, water & electricity, etc. Just saying.

I live in Santa Monica California (Los Angeles County) used to live in San Francisco. My house is new and built to current earthquake codes for California and the office I work in has been retrofitted to current California earthquake codes. I have a storm shelter with a month’s worth of food and supplies in the case of an actual earthquake emergency. I forgot to add the biggest earthquake I was in: Loma Prieta in San Francisco October 17th 1989. I was at the A’s-Giants World Series game! 15 seconds of pure adrenaline and fear! I’m glad I wasn’t on the Bay Bridge and especially not on the Cypress Expressway!

My grandparents lived in Chatsworth at the time and we were in Idaho (we had moved up there from Canyon Country/Santa Clarita in '89 to start a ranch). So of course we were glued to the TV for days because we couldn't get anything from them, didn't know if they were alright or not. I also had an uncle in Canoga Park, and we didn't hear from him for about a month, and all my cousins' relatives in North Hollywood were a big question mark for a while too. We were pretty convinced some of 'em were dead before they finally were able to get ahold of us. This was so awful.

RIP to the 57 people who lost their lives. I lived thru this. Was v lucky. 🙏 I remember seeing a lot of moving vans in front of people's homes after this. And the windows of stores being boarded up on Ventura Blvd, due to broken windows. Also remember the 1989 SF earthquake was horrific to watch on TV. The 2 level freeway collapsing on each other and people being trapped underneath. Yikes.

I have one but due to the rims being wiggly it always hits the chassis, but it is fast, once I was going to buy bread, my tire was deflated, so I used drag knowledge to know that super super ultra soft and deflated tires expand when speed catches up, so I used it, and while going to my limits i felt a lift at my rear, went super fast, amazing, best bicycle yet (or ever) after my old broken down BMX, hope they make more of this.
