My Winter Microgreen disaster and how I learned from it

Hey guys, so its Winter and I don't know about you but this is the time of year when I had my biggest learning after starting my microgreens business. 2-3 weeks ? Wow 😳
For celery, What’s the distance between the tray & the light? What color light do you use & how many?
do you still soak the peas for this type and what seed of pea is this? also are there any other varieties that can grow in full blackout like this? maybe its worth having a section of the grow area dedicated to complete darkness, for germination but also for this and other plants(if there are any that can grow in full darkness). never seen this type before its very shocking. would be cool to mix tendril peas with these for a stir fry, they are so long could be almost like a noodle replacement?
Hello. I'm from Poland and I have a question about lighting. What lamps do you use? In Poland, very few people grow microgreens and I have no way of knowing what lighting is best. I only know that the best is 6500 K, but I don't know the rest of the parameters. Could you give some advice? Can you send a link to the auction? Regards.
You mean 21 days shelf life keeping indise the fridge? Or with out fridge?
I just experienced the same thing with my first winter, and trying to learn to control humidity. I grow in tents and thought it would somehow be a good idea to turn the exhaust fan off for the night. Needless to say, when I woke up and looked at my phone, I went straight to panic mode and expected the worst, 97 percent humidity and looked exactly how you described, like someone had taken a hose sprayed down the inside of the tent. I thought all hope was lost! Luckily all electronics were ok and are still working fine to this day (this was about a month or so ago). Definitely a learning experience. LOL
Hey man I'm glad you were able to sort it out in time though! Losing the entire crop is not fun. Deffff a learning experience haha
Hi ! So you dont need full datk for germination ? Have you already tried to let them grow as baby greens instead of microgreens (for lettuces or leafy greens of course.)
Nope, they will germinate in little to partial light. I have and personally love baby greens! Stay well friend!🤘🤘🌱🌱
Great information man. I appreciate it greatly. My first grow definitely had some rot issues and my power bill was through the roof. Any tips on reducing power use?
Glad you enjoyed the video! We've just tried to be energy efficient in the tools we're using over time but definitely early on it was just (can we make this work) lol. This might be a fun topic to cover going into the new year
@@TheConsciousCultivators-wq9sc yeah, the bills are or were the least of my concerns also. Needless to say my electric bill skyrocketed.. cut costs where you can like using, tap water and either filtering it or adjusting the pH, I was buying gallons and gallons of spring water and it becomes cumbersome. Pure coco coir is what I use for substrate and though it works pretty well by itself, I do recommend adding in some perlite for better drainage as Coco tends to hold water well, and it also gets costly quickly. I am looking to switch over to ProMix myself here shortly.
I feel you on that! When I started I was doing the same thing. I honestly haven’t measured the ph of my water in years and all of my crops grow just fine. I will make a video shedding light about some of these things! Thank you so much for commenting! I’m wishing you the best of luck moving forward! If there is ever anything I can do to help shoot me a message and I’ll be glad to help how I can!
Can you share how you grow beets?
Absolutely, we will make a step by step video!
@@TheConsciousCultivators-wq9sc 👍
Hey bro reach out to me , I have quite a large indoor growing area which we tried another plant,, and now looking into micro greens, could work out a plan .
Absolutely, send me a dm and I will send you me email and we can set something up! I’d love to help you get started.
Can you suggest me control measures for that conditions. I have noticed in my microgreens tray
The main components of a microgreen operation are light, grow medium, water quality, temperature control and humidity control. Most crops do well with a 12/12 light cycle. I personally prefer to use promix potting soil. Always make sure you have a good filter that you are maintaining regularly on your water manifold. I like to keep my thermostat in my grow room set at 68 and I keep a commercial sized dehumidifier that I keep set at 66%. Water as needed and you should be good to go!
This guy looks like he grows some other crops too 😉
He does grow some other crops forsure!!
Are these wasabina ?
Yes they are a mixed variety!
Are these seeds for replanting?
Can you eat the seeds?
Okay now tell us what you do about the sunflower seed nightmare!
Totally covered in white fungus. Thinking what wrong did I do. Maybe the soil or watering but actually it's all seed.
Great videos! I've been watching lots of videos on Micro's and urban farming and came across your content. Thanks for sharing man
Hi, I just grow some beet microgreen last week and I put soil on top of the seed and I only had few that the seed that were stuck to the leafs. I harvest at day 15 Why do you harvest at day 21?
What do you think of the hp pro mix? I just got it and am worried it’s going to dry out very quickly
Can you link to your equipment? Where are you buying the pots, racks, etc. Thanks for the videos. Very informative and helpful.
I've been a microgreens farmer for a few months, and are those bootstrap farmer trays? Tried a few different ones, there's were bit more pricy but haven't had any issues since
Yeah definitely they are from bootstrap farmer! When we started you could grab the standard quality deep trays for like .75 each they would break mad quick. Then greenhouse mega store dropped these extra thick trays for like $2 each. Recently alott of mainstream companies have started to make the shallow trays. Like $5 per tray is alott but they last longer then any other tray line I have used. Mad thick I haven’t broken one yet. 🤘🤘🌱🌱
have you tryed purely hydroponic solutions? i found some reusable grow mats on the onthegrow website. made of silicon and steel, was considering trying these out to remove soil from the mix. also how do you feel about cocopeat? see a lot of hydroponic growers use that or recommend using coco one last question, what do you do with all your soil after you've harvested? is there a way to recycle it via a mulcher or some kind of compost system? the waste of all the soil is the main reason i was looking into hydroponic in the first place thanks
Yeah forsure, there are alott of people out there working on cool hydro projects. That is really a whole rabbit hole topic honestly. Long story short alott of that equipment is really expensive. I always recommend that people that are new to the game start with the traditional shelf and soil set up until they get accustomed to the lifestyle of a grower. Alott of people spend a load of money on the nicest set ups then decide they aren’t really willing to do what it takes to do this long term. So my advice is start small and basic then decide if you want to make the long term investment of automating things. I recommend using promix or sun grow it’s going to be the most economical and meet all of your needs. Luckily we have chickens goats and pigs so I am able to feed them my spent trays which doesn’t exactly equate to cash but I feed them majorly microgreens which drastically cuts down on the grain bill. You could look into composting systems but that is where the argument of grow mats and hydro comes into place. I’d recommend getting started and then make a decision of how nice/advanced you want to go! But totally up to you it’s all about what best suits your needs.
@@TheConsciousCultivators-wq9sc thanks for the insights!
how would you approach them on pricing initially? I think that is what they will ask first the most of what is the pricing. Do you have a preset price list before you go in or do you take their order? Do you have menus with you? Would love to see that side of it
Is there a way to maybe add this to the commercial product without the appearance of just paper towels? maybe like the sponge diapers for meat that catch the drippings at the bottom that absorbs some liquid?
Yeah absolutely, but the cost is significantly different. Being an individual selling to chefs directly you are not breaking any rules by using paper towels Instead of a clamshell diaper. If you are GAP certified that may be different. In my experience chefs are not willing to pay any more money whether you use a paper towel or something else. Having a paper towel isn’t even 100 percent necessary we just do it for extra precaution. All about personal preference!
Hi! Do you have links to all the seeds you recommend? Maybe something with an affiliate link for you to get some commission? I'm getting started and looking at the commercial side of things but setting up my first growing for my own personal needs. Figure I'll learn for myself first and then turn it into commercial business if I enjoy it. Great content though I'll be tuned in!
Brilliant idea. Thanks for sharing 🙏

Thank you! I been using this technique for years. I learned it from a lady who used to run the game in my area like 8 years ago she’d been doing it for like 15 years before that… true og! I'm in the process of sowing my samples to restaurants. And it's definitely tough. I think this is where people give up and fail. Growing microgreens is really easy, but no one ends up thinking about the other side of the business which is I believe 80% of it and that is business itself. So far I've sampled over $800 worth of microgreens and I still don't have an account. Lol i'm gonna keep at it. :)Thanks for the word of encouragement!
Hey you're exactly right, this is the toughest part of the business. Keep at it and happy to provide some encouragement through my messups! >.< - It really is a numbers game. For every 100 you talk to you might get 1-5, which is why its important to keeping approaching Chefs and growing in the process. Keep me posted, best of luck on landing that first client
@@TheConsciousCultivators-wq9sc thank you for your videos! I actually started this business with the help of people like yourself. I believe this industry has huge potential with much needed tools for microgreen businesses. Networking is one of them. I'm a product designer and used to design packaging. I'm realizing that there's a huge role with providing freshness. Ironically, when I was living in New York City and working as a product designer, the last project I was working on was salad greens right before they fired me LOL ..that was back in 2014. I never thought I'd be doing this in 2024. But I think that there is potential with improving the ability to transport microgreens and keeping them fresh. I used to attend packaging tradeshows to see the latest technology. There really hasn't been any improvement other than moisture absorption pads. I might start delving into this again because this is a much needed area for innovative solutions. I'll keep you posted for sure.
Good luck brother!!
They look like Barrina T8s. Being that far from the microgreens you'd think they'd be fine. I have mine probably 6 inches lower. If you're ruling out water PH sounds like a right assessment though! I'll sub to see that test!
Yeah water PH is not really an issue, but everything has been growing great lately. Still havn't tested it >.<
the best way to sell micro greens is using metal reusable boxes. trust me. you can prevent in such a good conditions and last longer than plastic boxes.
Oh interesting, where are you snagging these metal reusable boxes? Would totally be down to give em a shot
We use thin freezer jell mats. We then put cut clamshells on the table. Multiple jell mats in a big cooler to swap out through the day. No mess of dirt in a container that gets turned over in a customers reusable bag. We find most of our produce customers bring their own shopping bags. They typically are not receptive to soil containers going in them. But to your point many different ways of doing it. Also in our state it would be considered a “live plant” sale, which would require an additional license of $300 per year.
Oh interesting, what state is that?

Just got our walk in installed too. We got a modular system tho. So it came in parts and built like legos
Hell yeah that's the way to go dude, how was it? For us, this big guy was a pain to move, but we got a great deal on it a while back and it woulda been a shame to pass it up
Maybe it seems silly, but lighter green pigments absorbed light differently than darker or purple right? So maybe organize shelfs according to pigment of plant, and then it's easier to adjust light differences? Awesome setup though!
True that, great idea :D and thank you!
Save you a lot of money
Definitely, there is alott of talk about what’s what and quality but these work just as good as any others in the game in my opinion. It’s all about personal preference! 🌱🌱

Dope. Appreciate the free game brotha man. Have u thought about purchasing one of those commercial industrial dishwashers that restaurants use? They rince, wash, and Sanitize all n one. The ones with a door which slides up and down open and xloses. Cost you about 7-10k but it would be well worth it. It will pay for itself in time alone Saving you thousands of man hours of washing and sanitizing trays. Even faster than dunking method for microgreen trays, totes, etx. Super efficient and fesible. Your business seems to be at th3 "scale" of needing a proper indust. dishwasher. Next level type ish
