I thought this was going to be a critique on the ultimate series, you gave some valid critique until it turned into a melo dramatic soap box by the end, no disrespect. The only creative team that I'm aware off to be changing in an ultimate title is Ultimate Spider-Man. When they switched Marco Checceto for David Messina. And that's done in comics today quite a lot. Basically, they're telling the story from the POV of Harry/Gwen or Jonah/Ben. I do have my issues with Ultimate Black Panther specifically. I think is too dragged out and the story could've been cut to 8 issues iinstead of 12.Also, I agree it's heavily inspired in the MCU lore. However, the introduction of the anti-vibranium is a nice twist. It's just taking too long to flush out the concept. At the end of the day, if it's not for you, it's not for you. You can at least say you tried. You gave it an honest chance, gave your time and money and you felt it lacking. I respect that.

Ultimate spiderman and ultimates are the only marvel series on my pull list right now. The only i "cant" wait the 3 months for to read on unlimited. If marvel is not soing it for you. The 3 absolutes from DC are all great. Outside the big 2 is where it gets really good. In no particular order aome of my favourites Transformers Void rivals The Power fantasy The moon is following us Geiger Rook: Exodus Really excited for Aaron's turtles as well, but havent gotten into it yet

I like the new Ultimate line but I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone. That said, I don't understand how one line of books can push you out of collecting. I got back into comics about 10 years ago after a 25 year absence and I can easily say that right now American comic books are the best they've been in those past 10 years. You should be able to find a handful of books that suit your taste. Between the big two, DC is much hotter than Marvel though right now, IMO.

I read X-Men as a kid through the 80s and up until when I went to college in the early 90s. X-Force was what got me back into comics- Not the 90s Liefeld iteration, but the black-ops Wolverine led squad. There are many worthwhile collected volumes...but, yeah-I myself checked out a few years ago- I noticed that there aren't writers writing 'heroes' anymore- just self-righteous irony. The X-Men have become segregationists and petty violent extremists for many years now. I gave up. The last collected volume I purchased in years was TMNT 'The Last Ronin'- excellent story if you're a fan of the original series.

In singles Absolute Wonderwomannis a great new take on that story and is only in its infancy so I’d recommend that for DC’s take on a good ultimates interpretation, great art and story with no prior knowledge required to enjoy. Other than that trades are the way to go for a complete story and the independents can offer you some great stories well told, I like V you had an expansive hiatus for about 20 years when the 90’s heyday demanded too much of the wallet but I have an enjoyable addition to my fantasy/SF and horror reading by reading modern comics so I do hope you find something to reignite your passion Rob. Thanks to you and Lena for a great channel by the by 👍

ANOTHER THING THAT RED RISING IS DIFFERENT FROM HUNGER GAMES 1. HUNGER IS A RESULT OF A FAILED COUP AGAINST THE CAPITOL 2. the genre - yes the book one of trilogy- one part kind of coencpt like oppression - yes plot- no its totally different from hunger games the sci fi upgradation like genetic - no target audience - no nature of govenment - abolsutetyl not 1. hunger games is based on regionla and trade skills division red rising has a genetic division 2. the nature of authority in hunger games - centralised and extractive red rising - centralised, extractive and space based there are no tropes in red rising like in hunger games like love triangles, flawed female lead as you progress in the trilogy, it gets better and more different moreover hunger games ended after the revolution (except its prequel series) red rising continues after the revolution ...focusing on the transition of power

Like many, comic books were a big part of growing up for me. There was a "candy store" (my dentist sends his thanks) half way between my house and elementary school, that had an alcove off to the side that stocked most every issue that came out. Comics weren't fancy. To be honest the artwork and stories weren't all that great (in hindsight of course), but it was something to look forward to twice each week as new issues came out. You bought them, you swapped them, you argued with friends about what super hero was better, you (heaven forbid) rolled them up in your back pocket and when all was said and done, your mom didn't hesitate to throw them out once you got older. Somewhere along the line comic books became "special", Prices went up (justifiable to an extent - comic artists/writers weren't the best paid), artwork improved (not sure about the writing) but now they became collectible. There were variant issues, holographic covers, multiple Number 1s, whatever to sell more comics as possible ":investments" - culminating in comics being graded and encased in plastic (thankfully that market is tanking). I think there was a time when comics were honest in what they were supposed to be. That time seems to be long gone. And don't get me started on the shift to superhero movies. What a dumpster fire.

I've moved more to getting trades rather than single issues. You get a whole storyline at once rather than dragging it out for 6 months. Really enjoying the Energon Universe (Transformers & GI Joe) right now. Try a few non Marvel or DC things that aren't burdened by years of continuity and other connections.

comic book talk :) ahhh man I feel you, I had this burnout a few times, the reboot of continuity is what kills me. I discovered manga in my 40's and I was very much against it at first, black in white, weird pacing, now I read 200+ volume a year, One Punchman, Aces of the diamond, One Piece, Blue Lock, Blue Giant (digitally, I have no space), I really like crime comics, I read Monstress from Image. I have plan to finish reading Fables and catching up on OnePiece in 2025.

I think the amplifier is my favorite signet theory. I think the dreaming was all from Xaden’s memory and his power being amplified so she dreamed it too, and the Rhiannon power boost is confirmation. The signets seem to be related to subconscious needs, and when these started happening, she was yearning to be needed and useful in the war effort.

I think all your points are valid... ...for any Kickstarter not run by Brandon Sanderson. He has the track record with crowdfunding. He enjoys RPGs. He's talked about his plans for this game and how he expects it to grow alongside the Cosmere. He ran the most successful kickstarter of all time last year and knows how to deal with fulfillment. Again, all those concerns are totally valid for a regular RPG kickstarter. But that's not what this is.

Oh finally the algorithm actually gives me something good. There's very few reviews or impressions out but glad mine aligns what both your experiences. My biggest criticism is in fact the word choice in the beginning, it really felt like the author was exhausting her word bank that was incongruous to the context or voice of Laudna. In fact it's hilariously paradoxical that there were so many obscure words used while Laudna is barely learning how to speak, and lightens up when she has a better grasp at language. Otherwise I decently enjoyed the novel. I'm a big fantasy reader, DnD player, and Critter though I loosely follow Campaign 3 which features Laudna. With all that I don't think new readers need prerequisite knowledge about DnD or Critical Role because honestly there wasn't much of it besides being in a fantasy setting. I knew Cassandra Khaw has a background in horror fantasy, but I don't think we got that here outside the imagery. It really feels like a cozy fantasy that focuses more on Laudna's character and how her benevolent actions manifested scary stories of her as a consequence, and less on narrative or plot beats. What I enjoyed most is how Laudna is potentially a really good allegorical portrayal of discrimination. She has a big heart and beautiful soul, although the people around her recognize that they still reject her because Laudna defies the preconceived notions of what life should be, taught by religion and society. Laudna endures it all, especially to her own detriment because she doesn’t want others to suffer.

So glad you found us! We felt very similar to you about this book, and so glad we got to read Laudna’s wonderful backstory too!

It’s a bummer there’s a delay, but I think it’s worth the wait (Rob). It’s a great dark fantasy tale that takes the reader on an unexpected journey!

As a CR fan and huge Laudna stan I am so glad someone made a video about this book knowing almost nothing about CR. This character is my favourite CR character and Marisha Ray who created her and plays her in campaign is incredible talented and Cassandra has taken already amazing Laudna and made her even more complex with her writing. Me, having context of her present storyline cried multiple times reading this book bc of how far she has come. And Imogen’s addition by the end of this book shows context to people who have seen them in campaign how much effect they have on each other’s lives. Thank you for picking this book to read. Fully recommend watching the legend of Vox Machina especially if you want to see more Delilah :) Cassandra Khaw is a genius for writing this book the way she did.

So glad to hear from a fan who watched the third campaign. Rob watched the first campaign, and is wanting to watch Bells Hells after reading this book. We’re so glad that this was as good for existing fans too!

Impressive reading. Lots of hard copy books means lots of book storage. Game of Thrones ending in the film series was a disappointment but really liked its developmental world building. The books likely have a different ending so want to read them. Read heaps as a youngster but a very active, adventurous lifestyle thereafter diminished those reading passions. Now I really want to reignite imaginative world and character building via good fantasy, speculative fiction and (ancient) historical fiction series. This has turned out a slow process so far - in the middle of it. Feel I can can get back into it - but has been slow. Reading many books at once doesn't help.

Reading multiple books at a time can be helpful at times, as you can switch books to keep your interest in reading without having to struggle through a less interesting section all in one go

The book summary at the beginning sounds good to me. Like the banter between both of you discovering more into the overall plot. The exposition Rob discusses for the first third of the book, depending how well it is done, sounds like the world and character building for the whole series will be huge - I like the sound of that. Most great reads for me have generally not been easy reads to start out with. Your channel is excellent for exploring down potential books to get in genres I like.

Very interesting selection of books. The Taran Matharu ones catch my interest most of all. But there are others I like the sound of that are totally new to me. Really like the way you guys have designed this channel. Will be watching as your next series unfolds and hope to actively read in line with your pacing somewhere down the line.

Congratulations on your first anniversary. In my view, both of you create really good and differing insights into a range of pretty good Sci Fi/Fantasy books. One of these days I will read quick enough to complete a book the same time you do. Rob's shirt is very accurate - flower of life symbology adds powerfully to the message.

Congrats! As a newer Subbie, I was drawn to your channel by the review on Navola. As more folks read it, they to will visit your channel. I especially like that you announce books to be read, so that we can share the experience. Most channels announce books but their review of them may be months later if it doesn't just sit in their tbr. Please give a deeper description of the upcoming books for review. Another channel sold me on reading Navola, but your channel was the first to give an indepth review. That is how I found your channel. The review is why I subscribed. I am a mood reader and try not to compare books to each other. So, allowing subbies to experience the book with along with you is in my opinion a huge draw. Popular older and newer books are great as some of us reserve from libraries where once popular, the wait is too long.

That’s good to know, we have been debating how to announce our books. Our announce videos generally do as well, so it’s important to know that it was something that some viewers liked. We will keep this in mind going forward. Thanks again for watching!

First off, congratulations on the first year. I think you guys have done a darn good job in the technical aspects of your channel. I've never been bothered by sound or lighting but it's always good to improve on what you can improve on. In terms of feeding the algorithm, I have no clue as to how that really works, especially when you're in the earlier stages of a TH-cam channel where you're competing with so many other channels for attention. In terms of content, I might not be your ideal audience. I've never really read much fantasy, and the science fiction I tend to gravitate towards would probably be more in the vintage range, but even then, SciFi is a fairly small chunk of the books I read. That said, I have tried on a few occasions to try reading the book you're currently reviewing but in those few cases the books you've chosen are newer books and typically either unavailable or wait listed at the library - something others might have also experienced, so that may be something to consider if you want expand your read-a-long audience. I'm looking forward to seeing the changes you'll be making. Continued success in Year 2.
