- An overview of the major remakes released in 2024
- In-depth looks at titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, and Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2: How to Remake an Imperfect Masterpiece

Bloober Team proved us wrong, and I want to understand how. When a remake of Silent Hill 2, Konami’s psychological-horror masterpiece, was announced, gamers who had played the original were very skeptical. How could this amazing story, beautiful art direction, and chilling atmosphere ever be recreated in modern standards? How could this remake stay true to its source material while catering to ...

Gosh i wish i could play this game just cause of the ambience
He quickly loses the fear factor when you can hear the chucklefuck goose stepping around even when he's a floor below you
very much the same? you couldn't be more wrong. the original ps1 version have game breaking annoying flaw, which is incredibly long loading times and lengthy fancy battle animation (which adds nothing to gameplay but still an awesome experience). and thankfully both are gone from the remake.
@@casekocsk true, I always consider loading times to be "a given" improvement for remakes and remasters of PS1 games, but here I agree it is a change worth noting.
The direct control of party members *was* a thing the PSP port of Persona 3 added to the game. Only the original and FES had them attack on their own. Also, I hope Kotone gets a DLC
Thanks for the precision abiut combats, completely forgot that! And yeah, a DLC would make sense here, I agree
Only have 1 nitpick with the video and that the narration have an audible sighs and breaths. Other than that amazing video. Didn't know 2024 had a lot of remakes. Clearly it was me not keeping up with the news lel
Thanks a lot for the comment and taking the time to provide some feedback. This is much appreciated! Yeah I sorry about the breaths, I'll try to find a better audio set up / mic for my next projects.
My pleasure my dude. Hope your channel blows up. This video alone is well made. Now I'm gonna watch your other videos
Didn’t mention Kage shadow of the ninja!!
@@mohammadabuqubu7079 you're right, sorry, I completely skipped this one although I had covered on X it's announcement and early demonstration at TGS back in 2023. Did you play it? How does it hold up? I never played the OG so I might use that opportunity to play both and do a stand-alone video on that one!
@@RetroToHero It's a bit of overlooked gem unfortunately. I only played the demo but def high on my wishlist, I'm eyeing the Japanese version as I believe it is the coolest looking of the bunch, once it's on sale on play-asia.
@@mohammadabuqubu7079 wow you sold me! I'll try and get a hand on it and it would be a nice little project for me to work on too! Thanks!
Censored demakes
Really really intresting idea hope this video blows up! I forgot that awful lifeless looking brother a tale of two sons remake came out lol
Thanks a lot! Haha yeah I don't really get the strategy here. A remaster would have been more than enough for this game, which was beautiful originally.
Awesome video, thank you!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!!
Planing on get saga on switch...
@@lyra6529 saga was really one of my favorite surprises this year so I'm sure you'll have a blast! I'm planning to do a more in-depth video on that one in the next few months, so stay tuned!
Enjoyed the video. Only got around to playing FF7 Rebirth and SH2 Remake myself. But I would love to get around to some of the other ones.
Thanks! Nice, you already did the two best ones in my opinion! Then if you're into RPG I guess with DQIII and Romancing Saga 2 you can't go wrong 😉
kind of have the feeling that the golden era classic movies will come back as Donnie Yen is about to do martial arts movies in Hollywood. I know they made some great remakes and comic book movies but its not welcoming us now like how many Lion King, Avengers, Batman, Superman or whatsoever do we still need?!!! Even nobody will look at people like Tom Holland amd Ben Affleck to say they want to be Spiderman and Batman. If you go back to the 70s and 80s, people want to become a martial artist because and Bruce Lee and people want to become a bodybuilder because of Arnold.
10:26 they removed the "im sorry" part because it would imply that marry is forgiving james out of guilt and not out of genuine forgiveness
@@kewldude23xx interesting, didn't know about this. Devs confirmed this in an interview or something? It makes sense, though I was personally ok with Mary showing sometimes conflicting and paradoxical feelings. And I still believe that doing so simply had as a side effect to remove the most touching moment of the original letter, both in terms of message and delivery.
Great video
@@luckydernoob5517 thanks a lot! Much appreciated ;)
Nothing is perfect, but some things get very close. SH2 is as close to a perfect psychological horror story driven game as it is possible in my opinion. The remake does it justice though. That's as good as we could hope for.
@@kosmosyche agree a 100%
As a fan of both games. I liked the longer “dungeons” in lack of a better term.
Yeah me too! The only one that dragged on a bit too long in my opinion was the prison. But maybe it was just because it was so frightening that I wanted to get out of there 😅
For me, I loved the long dungeons, but for newer players or for non-passionate gamers, I think it's a mistake to make the first half so much longer. The set up is "you know nothing and are looking for your wife" and then spend four or five hours just running about before it's brought up again.
@@JackChurchill101 i definitely get the point for newer fans, as long time fans we have the benefit already of be going intimate with the story. So I get how new players could get lost.
@@JackChurchill101 that's a fair point I hadn't considered!
SH2 was way better remake than the RE2, 3, Capcom changed way too much design ,music, characters , settings, story. SH2 was basically old SH brought into the new age
Yeah I understand! Also depends a lot on what we expect from a remake (very loyal, or a "retelling"). I'm open to both depending on the game, so I actually enjoyed a lot RE2R et RE3R in terms of gaming experience. But yeah, I think Bloober had a much more challenging task than Capcom here.
Yeah, Bloober were surprisingly very faithful to the original. They added and changed some stuff, of course, but it all fits very well with the spirit, the themes and atmosphere of the original. You can tell, this is a remake made by the fans of the original game, who tried to preserve the essence of the OG game respectfully and faithfully. This is why I'm totally for them remaking the first and third entries in the series, maybe even fourth. They've proven they are worthy.
RE2 was more of a reimagining which was cool. A different version of the same story, Look how they changed Mr X, it was different in a cool way
Cccgv.
So sick of these tourists saying the demake is a masterpiece 😂. None of you played the original to even compare 😂
Watch the video and you'll see 😉
Comments like these are so fucking stupid. What will you say when someone who played both comes along? I played the original on a real PS2, I loved it. It's one of the most important games of all time to me. It was one of my top 3 games. This remake is fucking good. That's all I can say. You can't just hunker down on your opinion like it's fact and then pull out shit like that. Plenty of people who love the original agree they were wrong about this remake and that it was way more than what was expected. I made the mistake of just viewing the cutscenes of the remake, and finding things to dislike about the models, acting, and minor changes. I was livid that the gross room was missing from Angela's boss fight. When I actually played it though, I was in absolute horror and shock through that entire section in the remake, and it was a moment of amazment when I realized they didn't remove the flesh walls, they just EXPANDED THEM and integrated them into a chase. I was pissed at the butchering of Angela because of the actor and face change, until I saw that boss fight. Point is, I used to see remake James and feel rage. I actually gave it a chance though, and it immersed me in a way no game ever has.
Dude I played the og and even own the ps2 classic. The remake is very good. I do have criticisms but overall it is an amazing remake.
Bro who cares y’all old heads need to get over it 🤷🏻♂️ bc they just games getting mad over a person playing a remake and getting upset is just sad honestly I get it that’s your game but I mean come on be happy that more people are getting in the series bc it will get more popular
@skullcrusher783 true! And the Silent Hill series really needed a comeback after all these years!
I mean i like both the og and the remake equally there is things i liked more in the og and more things i liked in the remake... Anyways no game is perfect.
Totally agree! And it's often the curse of remakes: the idea that the original is untouchable or was perfect, blinded by our nostalgia.
The remake is good. I am just heartbroken at the fact that the original will become lost media because of the idiots at Konami.
We have the pc version bro the enhanced edition ❤
I agree that a modern console remaster would be warranted. Actually I think all remakes should have, included as a bonus, the original game remastered or preserved in one way. Medievil remake did this and it was amazing!
It will live in our hearts also with me and others that have physical copies of the ps2 classic .
Tfw people forget emulators are a thing
Well-written and structured video. I figured you must have been a bigger TH-camr at first until I’d taken a glance at your sub count. Speaks volumes. Keep it up!
Thanks a lot! I'll definitely try!
Why did they remake the game instead of just remastering it ?!
i love the remake, but i wish they'd port the original games to PC, easy money
There is apparently an issue with the source code of the original Silent Hill 2 being "lost" back then... but it's true that it can be dealt with if enough ressources are put into it... maybe Konami figured a remake was more worth the effort?
@@RetroToHerosource code was not lost, Konami just didn't care. The Enhanced Edition team found the source code, it's there
Cuz they're just stupid. (And also the source code got lost or something yay) ((emulation is our only choice))
Because a remake takes more care to pull off properly (which they did) and a remaster is a lot easier and more money hungry because they can just slap in some new textures, clean up some code, and boom they can sell a 20yo game at full price. Plus they tried "remastering" SH2 and 3, and we got the HD Collection from it, and that was ass and a half
fantastic video, and like the other comment, surprised you've released so few videos with such high quality! excited to see what you have next

The characters feel the enemy yes remember “Resident Evil”
Recently I’ve recently decided to the just to play hide and seek with Tryant. Granted I make sure to take out the Lickers scattered throughout the station, but the other day I started stalking him after hiding in the save room with Claire.
I prefer RE2OG over RE2R, but Mr. X was definitely one of the things in the remake that got a massive upgrade. I love how you can hear his footsteps from a long distance away, so even if he's no longer anywhere near the room you're hiding in anymore, you're still uncomfortable with leaving that room because you can still hear him.
Totally! the sound design is awesome here, those super heavy footsteps... still remember them months after playing the game.
Its a great game and mr x is creepy when he stomps around but I think this video is too overreacted
After that, 1st appearance run to the main room of the police station. It's important to know your route and gather what you need to leave without backtracking. Once you get to the foot of the statue where Marvin is head for the Jack handle down the narrow corridor on the ground floor... this is 100% important YOU HAVE TO WALK NOT RUN! Mr X can hear your footsteps when you run but not when you walk. It might get a bit tight for time when you get to the Jack because he might start to catch up with you only run again if he knows where you are till you've list visual contact with you. I've hid in the shower room inside 1 of the shower cubicles and had Mr X walk right by me. Mr X is not infallible you can out fox him. Its alot easier as Claire as the Suppresed submachine gun is a massive advantage!
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely apply them in my next playthrough. I had heard about a few techniques, but there's just something so frightening about this dude stalking us that I lost all common sense hahaha!
Me too😅. I was camping in the interrogation room for a while in my first playthrough 😂
Glad to see I was not the only one! ^^'
Trying to run past Mr x like that is a crime lmao what did you think would happen
@@Defaultgxth hahaha I panicked
@@RetroToHero it’s ok i understand he is quite the scary guy
Probably won't help now but, gunshots do attract him, i remember hiding in a corner for standing still took him ten minutes to enter that room, decided to walk around in same room took him 5 minutes, shot a bullet, 30 fuckinseconds later, KNOCK KNOCK OPEN UP THE DOOR IT'S REAL
Hahaha that's the frustrating part. You're trying to do your puzzles and all and you have no choice but to take down a few zombies, and boom, here he is...!
Yeah, and shooting him with infinity ammo, a non-stop pop pop of stainless steel
After a while it kinda gets annoying you trying to solve a puzzle and mr x just pops out
@@uchiha_n_naruto3455 yeah! The library puzzle is so frustrating... cant move those shelves without having to run around with thus dude chasing you lol
@@RetroToHero exactly. It took me a while but I eventually got out
From the first time I watched him powerlift that helicopter, I just paused the game and said "NOPE"! The rest of the game was sheer terror with those footsteps. I think we need a "Mr. X Survivors" support group!
Well for the s rank trophies u just gotta run past him😂
This was a remake that I liked and prefer for the most part over the original, my only setback is some of the voice acting that I prefer in the original game, (yes, mainly and especially Ada) this time Capcom managed to extract the positive points of Resident Evil 2 2019 and implement them in this Remake, extracting the most from the RE Engine for the new generation of consoles, creating impressive cinematics that contribute to the tone of the game that the producers wanted to convey for the new version of RE4, the original RE4 was never among my favorites in the franchise, but RE4 Remake managed to capture my attention and I can say that I was happy with the game we got, just as I feel with RE1 Remake
Resident Evil 1 brings the sense of mystery and the unknown to the player, the dread of entering each new room without knowing what is waiting for him with his scarce resources, just like for the characters, for us players it would be the first experience against these zombies and frightening beings altered by the (at this point) mysterious T-Virus. The 2002 remake improved on this experience while remaining faithful to what was offered by the original game. In Resident Evil 2, we see the nightmare of the infection spreading on a larger scale, instead of a mansion, we see an entire city falling into despair and horror because of the zombies, and when we think we can handle it, the surprise of new anomalies and an even more potent virus bring us back to the uncertainty of what lies ahead. I have mixed feelings about the 2019 Remake, although it improved and innovated some of the game's locations and character involvement, some scenarios changed or partly removed and some changes to the story strayed from the original experience, but others, like Annette's involvement and the city orphanage, pleased me. Resident Evil 3 brings us the sense of urgency and rush to get rid of and get out alive from the zombie infestation under Jill's eyes, as she goes through everything that happened to her in the first game again, we also have the tension of an enemy never seen before that is behind us and our comrades who will not rest until he sees us dead, and this contributes to the sense of urgency that "motivates" us to move forward even though we fear what might happen next, because we no longer have a choice. To this day, the PS1 version remains the original, unique and authentic Resident Evil 3 Nemesis experience.
@@AngelofDarknessXL excellent analysis! I perfectly understand where you're coming from and some of the faults you see in the second remake in particular!
This is an example of a Remake that surpasses its original version in every aspect, perfect setting, game mechanics faithful to the original, the story additions in the Remake (the Trevor Family, Crimson Heads) manage to add to the already known story without it being distorted or anything being removed or changed for any justifiable reason ruining the game experience and immersion (looking at you RE3 2020 😒), and the soundtrack redone from the original giving a more tense feel to the game, (although one or two are still better in the PS1 version, like the basement gardhouse theme). In short, an experience that defines what Resident Evil is and to this day one of the best games in this franchise.
@@AngelofDarknessXL yes you're so right about the soundtrack, which I didn't really develop in the full video. I should definitely listen to both OSTs side by side
I was in the safe room and I kept playing with him coming out then going back in. Till he got TIRED of playing B.S. he steps inside the safe area and pulls me out! 😂😂😂

@@jrockgotit5032thanks a lot man! Currently playing and capturing for my next project, I hope to have something ready soon!
A good 90% of video game remakes that come out are actually great. They're a good way to revive a dormant franchise by introducing them to a new audience and training younger developers to potentially create new entries in the future. Franchises like Kirby, Yakuza and Resident Evil still get original titles so the remakes are there to keep fans happy until the next mainline games.
@@vianabdullah2837 totally agree! And there are some cases where remakes probably (will) guide the direction an entire series takes. The new Visions of Mana seems largely indebted to the direction and achievements of Trials of Mana remake, and I wouldn't be surprised if Silent Hill 2 remake will be a major influence on how Konami wants to move forward with the series.
@@RetroToHero Good recent examples are with Samus Returns and Link's Awakening where's they were used as a basis for the developers to create original 2D Metroid and Zelda games.
@@vianabdullah2837 exactly! It might be used strategically, but if it leads to good games overall being developed, I'm all for it!
