I cover video game remakes of timeless retro classics.
Too many remakes? A 2023 Retrospective
When are there too many video game remakes? In 2023 alone, 10 different games were completely remade, and we’re heading in the same direction for 2024. In this video, I want to explore in-depth those 10 remakes released in 2023, and show you how those games all have inherent qualities, and how the current frenzy around remaking old classics might actually be a good thing for the industry and players alike. What has changed from the originals? How do these remakes hold up? Can they satisfy old and younger players alike? And are they simply good games? Whether you're into old-school SNES or PlayStation J-RPGs, survival-horror experiences, family-friendly platformers, or demanding strategy games, everyone should be able to find a classic gem to (re)discover among all 10 remakes released in 2023.

Remaking Resident Evil 1-4: Four Shades of Horror
มุมมอง 13K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
In 20 years, Capcom made remakes of their first four Resident Evil games. With each of them, a new vision, a new way to remake a classic, but also a new type of horror. From atmospheric thrills to urban post-apocalyptic vibe, let's dive back into what made the original games so powerful, and discuss how Capcom proves again and again their mastery in bringing them back to modern standards. 0:00 ...
The characters feel the enemy yes remember “Resident Evil”
Recently I’ve recently decided to the just to play hide and seek with Tryant. Granted I make sure to take out the Lickers scattered throughout the station, but the other day I started stalking him after hiding in the save room with Claire.
I prefer RE2OG over RE2R, but Mr. X was definitely one of the things in the remake that got a massive upgrade. I love how you can hear his footsteps from a long distance away, so even if he's no longer anywhere near the room you're hiding in anymore, you're still uncomfortable with leaving that room because you can still hear him.
Totally! the sound design is awesome here, those super heavy footsteps... still remember them months after playing the game.
Its a great game and mr x is creepy when he stomps around but I think this video is too overreacted
After that, 1st appearance run to the main room of the police station. It's important to know your route and gather what you need to leave without backtracking. Once you get to the foot of the statue where Marvin is head for the Jack handle down the narrow corridor on the ground floor... this is 100% important YOU HAVE TO WALK NOT RUN! Mr X can hear your footsteps when you run but not when you walk. It might get a bit tight for time when you get to the Jack because he might start to catch up with you only run again if he knows where you are till you've list visual contact with you. I've hid in the shower room inside 1 of the shower cubicles and had Mr X walk right by me. Mr X is not infallible you can out fox him. Its alot easier as Claire as the Suppresed submachine gun is a massive advantage!
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely apply them in my next playthrough. I had heard about a few techniques, but there's just something so frightening about this dude stalking us that I lost all common sense hahaha!
Me too😅. I was camping in the interrogation room for a while in my first playthrough 😂
Glad to see I was not the only one! ^^'
Trying to run past Mr x like that is a crime lmao what did you think would happen
@@Defaultgxth hahaha I panicked
@@RetroToHero it’s ok i understand he is quite the scary guy
Probably won't help now but, gunshots do attract him, i remember hiding in a corner for standing still took him ten minutes to enter that room, decided to walk around in same room took him 5 minutes, shot a bullet, 30 fuckinseconds later, KNOCK KNOCK OPEN UP THE DOOR IT'S REAL
Hahaha that's the frustrating part. You're trying to do your puzzles and all and you have no choice but to take down a few zombies, and boom, here he is...!
Yeah, and shooting him with infinity ammo, a non-stop pop pop of stainless steel
After a while it kinda gets annoying you trying to solve a puzzle and mr x just pops out
@@uchiha_n_naruto3455 yeah! The library puzzle is so frustrating... cant move those shelves without having to run around with thus dude chasing you lol
@@RetroToHero exactly. It took me a while but I eventually got out
From the first time I watched him powerlift that helicopter, I just paused the game and said "NOPE"! The rest of the game was sheer terror with those footsteps. I think we need a "Mr. X Survivors" support group!
Well for the s rank trophies u just gotta run past him😂
This was a remake that I liked and prefer for the most part over the original, my only setback is some of the voice acting that I prefer in the original game, (yes, mainly and especially Ada) this time Capcom managed to extract the positive points of Resident Evil 2 2019 and implement them in this Remake, extracting the most from the RE Engine for the new generation of consoles, creating impressive cinematics that contribute to the tone of the game that the producers wanted to convey for the new version of RE4, the original RE4 was never among my favorites in the franchise, but RE4 Remake managed to capture my attention and I can say that I was happy with the game we got, just as I feel with RE1 Remake
Resident Evil 1 brings the sense of mystery and the unknown to the player, the dread of entering each new room without knowing what is waiting for him with his scarce resources, just like for the characters, for us players it would be the first experience against these zombies and frightening beings altered by the (at this point) mysterious T-Virus. The 2002 remake improved on this experience while remaining faithful to what was offered by the original game. In Resident Evil 2, we see the nightmare of the infection spreading on a larger scale, instead of a mansion, we see an entire city falling into despair and horror because of the zombies, and when we think we can handle it, the surprise of new anomalies and an even more potent virus bring us back to the uncertainty of what lies ahead. I have mixed feelings about the 2019 Remake, although it improved and innovated some of the game's locations and character involvement, some scenarios changed or partly removed and some changes to the story strayed from the original experience, but others, like Annette's involvement and the city orphanage, pleased me. Resident Evil 3 brings us the sense of urgency and rush to get rid of and get out alive from the zombie infestation under Jill's eyes, as she goes through everything that happened to her in the first game again, we also have the tension of an enemy never seen before that is behind us and our comrades who will not rest until he sees us dead, and this contributes to the sense of urgency that "motivates" us to move forward even though we fear what might happen next, because we no longer have a choice. To this day, the PS1 version remains the original, unique and authentic Resident Evil 3 Nemesis experience.
@@AngelofDarknessXL excellent analysis! I perfectly understand where you're coming from and some of the faults you see in the second remake in particular!
This is an example of a Remake that surpasses its original version in every aspect, perfect setting, game mechanics faithful to the original, the story additions in the Remake (the Trevor Family, Crimson Heads) manage to add to the already known story without it being distorted or anything being removed or changed for any justifiable reason ruining the game experience and immersion (looking at you RE3 2020 😒), and the soundtrack redone from the original giving a more tense feel to the game, (although one or two are still better in the PS1 version, like the basement gardhouse theme). In short, an experience that defines what Resident Evil is and to this day one of the best games in this franchise.
@@AngelofDarknessXL yes you're so right about the soundtrack, which I didn't really develop in the full video. I should definitely listen to both OSTs side by side
I was in the safe room and I kept playing with him coming out then going back in. Till he got TIRED of playing B.S. he steps inside the safe area and pulls me out! 😂😂😂
@@runeplate123 hahaha I didn't even dare poke the bear ;)
I think stalker horror is exactly what makes games like outlast, This, Alien Isolation so scary... Survival, horror, you just survived there's no race of the heart. There's no anticipation on what's going to happen next.
@@WhiterunGuard001 totally!!! It's also why I haven't dared playing Alien Isolation... it just looks too scary. RE2 remake I could cope because I was somehow familiar with the original. But something completely new... tough
Alien Isolation and the way the AI learns your hiding patterns is why I haven't yet finished my run on it Amazing AIs ig has btw
If you run, shoot, melee, or make any loud noises he will come after you. If you're stuck in the safe room then just wait 3 minutes for mr. X to walk far enough away for you to safely leave the safe room.
@@kirayamato3181 haha I tried but for some reason I would always feel he would come back fairly quickly. But I'm really chickenshit with horror games in general so I may have been too quick to go back to safety ^^
Creak the door to see if hes gone... walk to the end of the safe room... he'll get bored and walk away
Re2r cheap and boring
Your opinion is trash and invalid
Youre so unique and different 🤓

Honestly thought it was overrated. After the police station it’s pretty boring. The sewers are terrible.

Meep. First. Youre not. Meep
nice video man, I hope you keep it going. I did enjoy this
@@jrockgotit5032thanks a lot man! Currently playing and capturing for my next project, I hope to have something ready soon!
A good 90% of video game remakes that come out are actually great. They're a good way to revive a dormant franchise by introducing them to a new audience and training younger developers to potentially create new entries in the future. Franchises like Kirby, Yakuza and Resident Evil still get original titles so the remakes are there to keep fans happy until the next mainline games.
@@vianabdullah2837 totally agree! And there are some cases where remakes probably (will) guide the direction an entire series takes. The new Visions of Mana seems largely indebted to the direction and achievements of Trials of Mana remake, and I wouldn't be surprised if Silent Hill 2 remake will be a major influence on how Konami wants to move forward with the series.
@@RetroToHero Good recent examples are with Samus Returns and Link's Awakening where's they were used as a basis for the developers to create original 2D Metroid and Zelda games.
@@vianabdullah2837 exactly! It might be used strategically, but if it leads to good games overall being developed, I'm all for it!
REmake 2 > REmake 1 > Remake 3 > Remake 4 Yes 4 is objectively better than 3 no question, but I still prefer it.
That's the beauty of it, things are so subjective, and I really think Capcom did an amazing job in trying out different things with all those remakes. I can't wait to see what approach they will take with the next remake!
wasn't just remakes, we had the last few years SO many collections. and have the state of play this week was remakes/remasters hehe so glad for that.
@@wolfwing1 oh yes most definitely! The Lunar collection came out of nowhere... it's so good to be an "older" gamer nowadays nostalgia wise!
@@RetroToHero though I hope it has the original sega cd opening :> LOVE that song and intro hehe. still want to get star ocean 2, I loved the playstation version nver beat it as I rented it, but was so much fun.
@@RetroToHero especially for the games I missed :> Never played the kain series, only played first lunar, as my friends second lunar bugged out about 3 hours into the game due to a scratch. One thing I've been loving is the kamatari damacy remasters or what ever :> Never got to play as a kid, so playing the first two finally was great. I'm definetly in the OLD catagory :> 49, my first games were on the comodore 64 :> Bard's taile, and such hehe.wich reminds me, still need to play through 2 and 3 of the trilogy.
Not enough remakes honestly….
@@dustpal yeah! It can be a controversial take but I think many classics, especially lesser known ones, ought to be brought back in the spotlight!
Excellent job. Great watch. Thanks!
@@MikeTynan-wp3rd thanks a lot!
I just can’t play re1 remake. It’s so I don’t know.. not good. The mansion is smaller, it’s dark to force scare you where the original house was well lit. The voice over was better but I just prefer the awful original voice over. So basically I’ve never completed it only the original a million times
RPD.......there's not a C in it
Damn, you're right! Always assumed it was RCPD since.. Racoon City. ^^''
@@RetroToHero but then again, it was in a game made by Japanese developers who had basic knowledge of the English language
@@JustinFlowers-kb9be makes sense!
Resident Evil one of greatest videogame franchises ever after streetfighter 2
Personally nothing beats how scary RE1 is, from the fixed angles to the constant quiet-ness and the occasional ambient music. Even without the presence of enemies, the game through it's atmosphere alone had you in a constant choke-hold, making you look over your shoulder and second guess every single little door and item. No other titles(even within the RE Universe) have come close to replicating the utter dread and suffocation that RE1 put you through. What a masterpiece....
That is beautifully put! Exactly how atmosphere really played with our emotions
if i ever get a child(not gonna happen) im letting them experience the re games when they asses are older
So re2-4 remade (built from the ground up reimagined) re1 remastered (a visual and audio upgrade with slight differences and quality of life updates)
I hope the years will continue to be kind to RE3, is one of my favorites and seeing it being recognized for what it is really makes me happy. I recommend the Noah RE retrospective, 7 hours straight of resident evil
Happy my perspective makes sense to know RE3 inside too! And thanks for the link to the retrospective! 7-hour, wow!
The one I'm looking forward to most is the Code Veronica remake for sure. Would be nice to get the outbreaks with PC co-op, or even Zero with PC co-op honestly also.
Me too! I loved the original, and it's so close in spirit to the original trilogy
Thank you! I’ve been a fan since the original ps1 trilogy and I love the remakes but was always in the camp of wanting more from RE3 remake but the perspective you put here is great and gave me a lot more appreciation for the remake.
@@ParUhDroyd thank you!! Glad my perspective makes sense also for the fans who felt let down by the remake! I definitely get where you're coming from
I want the re0 remake to be a co-op game like obscure from the ps2 and re5
Would make a lot of sense!
I got recommended this. It is a good video. I look forward to seeing more of your work
Thanks a lot! Will try not to disappoint!
I’m happy we’re getting remakes of these classic games that everyone fell in love with, I’d personally like a director’s cut of RE3R and RE2R, the team that made RE2R cut enemies and the library puzzle that everyone forgot about along with mirroring the A/B scenarios and removing the zapping system. RE3R’s team cut lots of content from the original and toned down Nemesis, so I’d appreciate it if Capcom went back to these projects and added the missing content in these games, that’s all I ask of them. RE4R and RE1R on the other hand are good just the way they are. These 4 remakes actually improve on almost everything. The soundtracks are improved on, the effects and graphics are improved on (RE3R may need a small update to RE2R’s gore and design but still good), character development and voice acting is excellent and not bland unlike the originals. The remakes pretty much improve on everything except content, that’s literally it. RE1R and RE4R nailed the content so they’re off the hook, but RE3R and RE2R’s content is stopping them from being considered better than the originals unfortunately. But hey, whether people like it or need these games are great and almost everything is improved on from the OG games.
My gripe with the 3 remake was that it felt lazy. Nemesis was mr cutscene man and the team that made it didn't bother to implement ANY physics to the zombies. They fell and died with the same single canned animation and froze in place and you couldn't do any limb damage at all. It was too short and cut out whole sections of the original and the fights with nemesis were a joke. It felt like a regression from 2 in every way. I did enjoy the game but it was a huge disappointment. Btw good luck with the channel! Great video especially for someone just starting out. I have a feeling you'll go far if you keep at it. 👍
Thanks a lot for the support! I'll definitely try to keep it up! And you're right, there are definitely some things that were rushed in RE3R, unfortunately
I am absolutely blown away by the positive responses this video is getting! Thanks a lot, and don't hesitate to let me know here what I could further improve on (I'm still new to this) or what remakes you'd like me to cover next! ❤
Nice video, comrade
@@cobraregala4571 thank you very much!
@@RetroToHero i hope re 1 r isn't remade again. We already have these games remade. No need for another remake for the four games. They should remake re 5 and 6 then stop.
I agree for RE1-4! I'm still hyped for Code Veronica though, this game didn't get through attention it deserved, and Zero was also a missed opportunity imo
@@RetroToHerore 4 og is still the best re ever. And re 1 r second best re game ever.
I’ve played damn near every resident evil original or remake games even survivor but only played RE4 once and never picked it up again. Should I play the remake for 4 or original first?
@@MacyP given how the remake is so close from the original, and unless you are big on retrogaming, I think just playing the remake is perfectly fine :)
I don't understand why most fans hate the action era of the franchise, like dudes you don't remember but at the time of RE3 the ps1 was SATURATED with survival horrors in the RE style, how the RE formula is relativelly simple to reproduce rival companies do A LOT of RE clones in the ps1 era, from vampire countdown to galerian everybody wants a piece of RE sucess, because of that RE Sales become smaller and smaler to the point of code veronica the first RE released for ps2 having horrible sales, the survival horror was a saturated genre and people where tired of the genre and mecanics so they decide to inovate and change everything we see before, and then 4 comes with the action horror formula that saved the franchise in the 2000s, so we should be tankful to 4 and 5 for saving the franchise and mading it be revelat for more than a decade until horror genre desaturaded, persobal taste is something, blind hate is another, yeah we know that the action horror culminate in re6 but the classic era culminate in zero as well and that game was bad, so don't hate an era or genre because of the fruits instead try to apreciate it by what this is by itself
Totally agree, RE4 not only was a huge innovation back then, but also a clear response to the context of the industry back then!
sorry classic games fans but for me and enfase on ME MYSELF (well and for some people I think) the classic games aren't scary anymore, sorry but if you don't grow up in the ps1 era that low poly grafics aren't that scary and the fact that the classic games take place more at well iluminated spaces do to hardware limitations and have simple mecanics that you can get after some few training this make this games more annoying than scary, again that's WHAT I THINK! MY OPINION! for me the classic games aren't scary, I lile the vibe they have with the epic soundtrack and the amazing sound design, but FOR ME that low poly grafics, well iluminated spaces and cheesy performances from the voice actors take me a lot off the game, the RE1 remake make it better but for me the tank control and fixed camera angles where more annoying than scary, I don't know I don't fear zombies because they barelly look like a menance with that slow moviments and weakness, I do grow up with re3 claesic but as a child I aways play on easy mode because I think it was funnier and when I finally play on hard mode as an adult I barrely fea anything because again the grafics limitations make the game don't scare me at all, I love the vibe of the games and I love they because they are fun to explore, but I don't really few scaried at this games and for me the remake of 2 is scarier than the original because of mr. x, but again THAT'S JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION!!!
Re1 modern controls are inferior
I also prefer tank controls, but the good thing is that we can still decide to use them in the remake
I agree so much with you especially on RE3!!! I love RE3 so much (especially Jill lol i fucking love her so much) But i have played RE4 original now for the first time recently and finished it (i did play the remake a while ago after 2 and 3) and i really love how the remake became. One of my fav details is that you can find the sacrificial ritual location from the beginning cutscene inside a mountain. You arrive there and know what happened there it's a weird feeling and RE2R is definetly my fav RE game in general (I noticed ur a small channel so THANKS YT ALGORITHM)
Thank YOU for your engagement! Wow I actually didn't know about the sacrifice location. Nice!!!
@@RetroToHero it is in the mountain next to the hanging wagons. I'm not sure if it is that location or smth inside the castle
28 days/weeks and world war z was not zombie movies
Why not? 😅 there are zombies... of course they go beyond the Romero era but I think that it's not because there's more to those films than zombies that they're not zombie-flicks too.
God everyone always jumps on the “RE3 remake sucks!” Bandwagon. Most people didn’t feel that way until they were told to feel that way.
I prefer the RE Director's Cut over the remake
