SAR Techs are not human. They are Super Humans and do things many normal individuals could not comprehend. Bravo to the SAR Techs and of course to the Flight Crew Too !! I'll give a thumbs up to that FE too :) God Job all around .
What no Ubber from your parking spot to the office ? ;) Thanks for sharing this flight experience
We have wheeled carts to carry all our gear actually. When I get a chance I'll try to take a video showing all the gear we take with us.
@@mattfrom103 No worries, We used a 733 to haul our crew around. Former CCGAux here and have worked under a Buffalo and Lab years ago. Keep flying and having fun !! Salute from the West Coast near CZBB :)
Great vids, i work on apron2. Sucks woodwords is now based on apron3. I don't get to see you guys up close so much anymore. :( Thanks for all you guys do.
Thanks for these videos, really fascinating to watch! I'm curious roughly what proportion of your missions are remote medevacs like this? I hadn't thought prior to watching your channel that this would be something Cormorant would be tasked to.
I can't really comment on the exact numbers. We're just buys in general. It could also be it's also a lot easier to film these missions instead of a hoist or anything at night. I actually just did a boat mission last night and filmed it for the first time. I am currently trying to stitch the video together.
Wow !.. total admiration for the teamwork !
Roger that … didn’t you remaster to FE, posted to 103 RU?
Awesome. Thanks for the flashbacks. 😁
We've done a few of those together Matt and far worse.😅😅😅 Sean O I hope you're doing well brother.
Indeed we have. I hope you are doing well as well.
Come to think of it I think you may recognize the hand on the hoist cable in more than one of my videos.
Many years ago, we had a Cormorant Heli hover over the Winter Harbour wharfhead for 20 minutes waiting for a sport fishing boat with a back injured person. They came down on the line with stretcher, put him in the basket, up and off to Campbell River. Great to have this equipment and personal 😉🇨🇦
If most of our citizenry and politicians only knew what goes on in the SAR world. You’re rocking it Matt with the videos. “That Others May Know”
Your videos oughta be everywhere. Too many citizens are poorly informed on the great work the CF does. Thanks so much
You gotta love RCAF SaR crews. Doing gods work
Mission accomplished 🚁🚑👍
Great video 👍
I live in a very remote fishing and logging community coast British Columbia. 442 gives us a hand out here. I know what you guys do and I'm grateful
Thanks for the kind words. Please make our jobs easier; when you're out in the middle of nowhere have a Spot/PLB/InReach/SatPhone/something with you!
@@mattfrom103 Great advice for anybody venturing into the wilderness for any reason.
Matt…. Appreciate the work you are putting into your videos, most excellent. Keep it up, fly safe.
Thanks for watching and the feedback.
Bill Barber? PPCLI and SAR Tech?
Guilty
@billbarber9840 Scarpe, 8008. You were my section commander. I saw you again a couple of times after that. Once in Edmonton after your first operational jump and then again in Trenton in I guess around 2000, 424 family day I'm thinking. You were in the FD at that point.
Job well done, as always!
I've lived north coast BC all of my life. Lab couldn't do that, VFR only, it's good to know you guys got some decent gear.
I never flew the Lab. This aircraft is light years ahead of the Lab but there are certain things the Lab was slightly better at.
Did she have a sat phone or sat communicator to get in touch with SAR or something?
If I remember correctly they had a sat phone with them. It is common for such groups to have at least one. As well, most individuals who spend any time up there will have an InReach, Spot, PLB, or equivalent with them.
you're killing it with these videos man.
The shots from the patrol aircraft were super cool. Have you ever considered doing a voice over for these videos? And I know it'd be hard to do (what with the releases and whatnot), but would it be possible to have a segment on what happened to the people being rescued? I'm always super curious what happened to get you guys to come out in the first place.
I could voice over, not sure if people would like that more than captions. Like you alluded to I can't discuss what happened to individuals. Maybe in the future I will make a video about how the larger system all works.
Great videos Matt, keep them coming …. lots of memories here. ‼️ Bill Barber, SAR Tech Crse 21 (1983), 103 RU 1989-1993.
attaboy, you're a badass.
This is the first time I've seen a helicopter fly an ils. Great!
It's really the same as an airplane. Transition to landing is a slightly different.
Awesome video mate. Just wondering why you don't do the full read back of the taxi clearance?
I probably should have. I think in this case it was a little backwards, I requested something and controller read it back to me as an instruction so that's a bit of a double check. Had there been a clearence to cross a runway or hold short of a runway a read back would certainly have been necessary. Good pick up.
Eerie doing an ILS through all that fog in a heli. Excellent work by the pilots and crew.
Great video! I see the Greenwood Cormorants flying over us in Halifax every once and a while.
Well done mission and video edit.
Thank you. It's been fun learning to use editing software.
Brilliant video thank you! Must be scary hovering in the soup before the airspeed comes alive!
Trust. Your. Instruments. We also practice this maneuver both in the sim and the real aircraft.
Love it. Sub'd.
Thanks for this. Fascinating to follow this landing. I wasn’t aware that a heli would land in the same way as a fixed wing. Also, I have been curious about the string of numbers and letters that are called metar. Was going to ask then you explained it. All of your vids have been very interesting and enjoyable. Maybe I could suggest more of the general operation of the Cormorant. Always enjoy seeing them whenever they fly past on the west coast.
METAR 160/10KTS 1/4SM R162800VP6000FT/D -RA FG VV002 160/10KTS: Winds are from bearing 160 degrees true at 10 knots 1/4SM:Visibility is 1/4 statue mile R162800VP6000FT/D: The visibility of the first 1/3 of runway 16 is between 2800 feet and greater than 6000 feet and trending downwards -RA: Light rain FG: Fog VV002: Vertical visibility is 200 feet. Landing like an airplane and taxiing off is the prefered method at a large airport unless you are very familiar with the airport, the weather is good, and the airport is familiar with both you and your downwash. At St John's airport we are only allowed to land on the runways due to our damaging downwash. But like I said, bad weather such as this you are landing on the runway, it's really the only safe option. What do you mean by 'general operation' of the Cormorant?
@@mattfrom103Thanks for the metar lesson. Looks like gobbledegook but I guess once you get used to it you can just glance at it. As for more content, I don’t know, maybe daylight cockpit stuff, what goes on in the back. I haven’t checked out all your vids yet so maybe I haven’t seen something. Whatever you post is all very interesting and enjoyable to watch. Thanks for it.
do you guys fly to CYQM, I've seen the cormorant a couple times here but I don’t know where they're coming from or what theyre doing haha
@@officialusmanqureshi that would most likely be 413 sqn based out of Greenwood, NS.
@ ahh nice thanks
You guys deserve a TV show similar to Coast Guard Alaska 👍🏼 👍🏼
Not familiar with that show. But what I am trying to do is just document what we do....without the drama. Not sure if I should start narrating or just stick to the captions.
@@mattfrom103 Caption is fine. Coast Guard Alaska is barely OK just another self-made drama so called reality show.
Nothing but respect for you lads and ladies, God bless!
These videos are fantastic. Thank you for sharing and keep them coming!
Thanks for watching, let me know if there is anything specific you would like to see.
You folks are a different breed, sheesh. Great work! Great video!
I'm surprised the Corm uses CRT's and not LCD's... Something about the camera's refresh rate and that of the screens causes the flickering... Only thing I would suggest is messing with the FPS of the camera. CRT's are usually 60hz - 80hz, you may need to lower the camera's refresh rate to match that of the CRT's (if possible). Great video btw! Keep up the great work out there!
In a year or two the Cormorant is getting a substantial upgrade with a new avionics suite...including LCDs. I bought some ND filters for a newer GoPro, hopefully that helps things out. I've noticed I never get the flicker when flying at night and the screens are dimmed really low. Thanks for the tips!
I don't think there's any workaround for the CRTs, it is what it is. So when the AP is engaged, will the system automatically capture the pre-selected altitude (level off)?
I've been playing with filters. Seems to help. With everything fully engaged the AP will take the helicopter from a hover to a pre-selected altitude and airspeed. Usually 500' and 75kts.
@@mattfrom103 Right, what you were saying in the captions. What I meant was, once you're established in forward flight, can you select a higher altitude and have the AP capture it.
@@danmorand3658 No, it does not have altitude capture in that manner. This is a simplified explanation but you have to manual fly to the altitude you want and then engage a hold.
구조되기전에 멀미한바가지 하긋네
Why backwards? Were the winds such that you couldn't hold off the left side of the bow flying forward? Or maybe that would be too hard to maintain reference.
The entire back fo the ship was full of obstructions. Thus the box was chosen. This is about the only way to do a bow hoist with this helicopter.
Wow that was incredible, I would have been puking my guts up once the spinning started.
Being a former northern Canada resident the idea of this type of ‘ambulance’ crossed my mind at times. However snowmobile trails are notoriously bumpy and anyone who’s been pulled in a sled behind a snowmobile can tell you what a bone jarring ride it is. This would get you from A to B but any injuries would probably be aggravated along the way.
I imagine it is slow going. I hope the 4 skis on suspension helps with the bumps, it must certainly be better ride than a qamutiik/sled. It can't be too much fun it is probably the better option than just being not transported.
How were they located? Great Rescue! Did they have personal locator beacons? Does Cormorant have Infrared Imagery?
I honestly don't remember the details.I think they called in with their cell phones initially and then their phones died. It was a small search area. They were quickly located using NVGs, I think they flashed us with a light or lighter. The Corm doesn't have IR but it is about to under go an upgrade that should give it IR capability.
Y'all are bad ass, and have my utmost respect. I've been a tech in the air force now for nearly 20 years (different CAGs than SAR) and the work you folks do is amazing and always astounds me. BZ.
Thank you for the kind words. It's a giant team effort...including techs.
That H model really looked like a J model. Great video! I worked at SARNOC for years and did many searches with 424 Sqn. I will always have a special place in my heart for SAR. Rescue!
Probably because it looks really clean lol but J's have 6 props per engine and have a black de-icing boot at the forward bottom part of the vertical stab.
I used to be a surface weather observer, so I understand the METAR numbers, and that was some crazy wind to be flying in. Awesome aircraft.
It's perpetually windy in Newfoundland, that day was particularly windy though.
Only in Canada! So what's inside? It's just a basic sheltered stretcher I guess?
I am not totally sure. Probably a bench and a stretch/litter. They are obviously not as well equipped as a larger ambulance but they can probably go down any groomed trail. This means they can get a lot of places. One of the reasons we get called out sometimes is extraction. Paramedics and Police can get to an injured hiker/snomobiler/hunter..etc via snowmobile, foot, or ATV but have no way to extract them. You can't easily transport an injured person on ATV or sled. This device greatly helps with that.
Depends, some are a basic shelter others have on board battery and basic life support systems like IV drip and vital monitor devices. It's less for them to provide aid while in transportation and more assessment of ABCs while in transport since nobody else is back there.
Very cool. I love your channel, please keep posting and let this thing grow!
Thanks for the kind words. My intent is to go through all my old footage and keep posting. It just takes time to stich together videos and I do this all on my spare time so I can old post a video every few days.
@@mattfrom103 Awesome! Take your time, this is the best look at Canadian SAR Helos I've ever seen. Loving every minute of it. I've been fascinated by you guys since reading the Boxtop 22 book Death and Deliverance during high school. Do you have any youtubers you are learning from as you make this videos?
@@ds9655 Boxtop 22 was a fascinating and tragic story for sure. I love these machines, the people I work with, and the job we do. I realized there is not much out there on the internet showing it all so I thought I would. I don't really have anyone helping me nor do I watch a lot of youtube. I'm not really here to influence or make money. I'm just having a little fun.
Cool video
Not really understanding the description in the intro. It says no aviation assets were able to fly into Cartwright but isn't that exactly what happened? Is the CH-149 not an aviation asset?
Apologies, I made an error when I typed it out. I meant to say that no other aviation assets were able to fly into Cartwright so then we were called it.
@mattfrom103 gotcha
Thanks for all those juicy uploads by the way, I love to watch these videos and to see you in action!
Thanks for watching them. I make these on my days off so it's nice to know someone is actually watching them.
That looked like a lot of wind at the rescue spot. Seems like hard work for everybody. There exists a video of a poor woman spinning endlessly, when hoisted with such a stokes litter, if I remember correctly. If weather is this harsh, the conditions to operate such equipment take so much confidence, trust, faith, composure, mental strength and responsibility it is insane, at least it seems like it from the outside. Hats off, as us Germans would say ^^
I know the video you are referring to. I believe in that video the guideline/tagline got disconnected which led to a spin. In the video you just saw we used a guideline specifically to prevent spins. The words you mention "confidence, trust, faith, composure, mental strength" all from training. Training is just instruction and a lot of practice.
