    Great review! SE V7 is the clear winner for recording in an untreated room for podcasts. AT2020 Condenser sounds great, but it's picking up fan noise or whatever that was in the distant background. I use Shure SM58 mics for podcast recording in an untreated room. The fellow single cup brewer is the one I use for my every day brew. I also have the XL and the large Glass vessel. I just find that fellows design is designed around a specific size filter. On purpose so they can go with you big dollars for future filter purchases. I found a filter for my small fellow that works fairly decent. I found it on Amazon but it comes out of China so I’m sure to rinse the paper well prior to Bring a cup. Which intern slows down the drip process. Resulting in a slightly stronger brew. I think I’m going to enlarge the holes on the bottom of the follow brewer to increase flow slightly. The reason the filters slow things down is you lose the pleats. By rinsing the filter material. It just increases the time of the pour over too much. That’s why I’m thinking larger holes would definitely help. I just refuse to pay their inflated price for paper filters they’re insane!!! Are there any other brands of filters out there they’re more affordable that fit fellow products??

    • @easytiger266
      @easytiger266 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to Fellow, They recommend their own filters, but Kalita 185 and Blue Bottle filters work as well. I am possibly heading down a similar route. I am torn between buying the Hario Decanter size 03 with a Kalita 185 ceramic dripper, or the Fellow Stagg XF. If i buy the fellow, i am going to test the cheaper alternatives.

      @@easytiger266 yeah, fellow recommends there filter and then gouges you for big dollars$$$!!!! I found a Chinese made filter with a little bit of a fold. It fits perfect. They’re reasonably priced, but I’m sure to rinse them since they’re from China. It does rinse the paper taste out very quickly by rinsing with hot water.

    You don't need to preheat the Clever since it's plastic. That plastic just doesn't really pull temperature out of your water like metal, glass, or ceramic. I also don't bother with the lid, tbh. I've done comparative tasting between brews with and without and you really don't lose enough temperature over the course of a steep to make enough of a difference. I mention these things just to say the Clever can be that much simpler for first-time brewers.

    Is the clever good enough to be the go-to method even for an experienced barista? Not sure if most of the time predictable and reliable methods are the top pick for people that really knows what they're doing and at the same time, would like to know if other brewers (V60) are preferred for the control they offer or by the taste of the coffee you can get from them. If you like the coffee you brew with s Melitta (I do) there's no justification to not using it on a daily basis to enjoy your cup of Joe!

      Hello again! So I’ve been enjoying my journey. I did graduate to a V60 and upgraded from the Fellow Ode gen 1 grinder to the Fellow Ode Gen 2 grinder with the upgraded SSP MP burrs $$$. I still use the Fellow Stag XF with certain beans. Others, I just have to go with an ultra fine grind and use the V60. I definitely appreciate your insights on the different products. So for me, the Fellow Stag XF is kind of like your first electric guitar. It’s basic enough, yet offers one with enough complexity to learn and grow. The V60 on the other hand is more of a nylon string classical guitar. It’s significantly more complex and unforgiving, however, with it’s complexity comes enormous utility and a much broader user index. I’ve greatly enjoyed this extraordinary journey and your contributions to the pour over coffee aficionado community are most appreciated! Thank you so much for all you do! John.

    • @rubenserhalawan571
      @rubenserhalawan571 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes the clever can clog when you go coffee first. Water first helps with this and it drains in about 45 to 60 seconds instead of 5 to 6 minutes when the clogging happens

    • @JohnnyF71
      @JohnnyF71 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd absolutely recommend water first. You get a much cleaner, sweeter result that way. It's prone to clogging and a longer drawdown time if you add coffee first, neither of which helps the flavour (unless you actually like that in which case do what you want 😂) James Hoffman advocates water first as well, and he's very rarely, if ever, wrong about these things.

    I recently bought a Hario Switch which follows the Clever style system but it has a glass/rubber construction, a bit more expensive but it is nicer to look at, I did a very amateur version of your experiment with a metal mesh filter and a plastic v60. The Hario Switch easily produced the best most rounded balanced tasting coffee with no effort to get that result. A clever or a switch is defintely the way to go for beginners and anyone will be able to consistently get a great cup of coffee with good FRESH beans. A Burr grinder,(Xeoleo from Amazon for £65) a Clever or a Switch, any cheap papers, a scale with timer and you can have great coffee in 5 minutes every day if you buy FRESH beans

    • @brewingjitsu
      @brewingjitsu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree, it’s fascinating to me how reliable the Clever can be compared to traditional pour overs. It’s a nice balance between an Aeropress (almost too many variables to control) and a V60 (too few). I’ll have to check out the Switch!

    • @brewingjitsu
      @brewingjitsu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the encouragement, glad you liked the video! Got another one in the edit right now, where I give the D3 and AT2021 a more fair comparison by positioning them in the same place as the AT2020, stay tuned for that comparison! I think that the AT2020 definitely has a more open sound than the v7, with crisper high end coming straight out of the mic. However, the tradeoff in echo in an untreated space is definitely something to consider, especially if you don't want to do a lot of work in post to remove the reverb. I currently use Izotope RX8 to get rid of reverb for my podcasts, and it takes a lot more attention than the sE v7 to get that out. I think that if you like the sound of the AT2020, it would probably be easier to EQ the air frequencies of the v7 than it would be to get the AT2020 and deal with the reverb. The next video also has some examples of what these mics sound like after running through RX8 and Nectar, just gotta wrangle all the audio in the timeline properly, haha!

      @@knowyouryoga Yeah, I would stick with the v7 and just make a parametric EQ preset with a gentle boost to frequencies from 4k-8k. You're totally right on the end, still learning and working to improve the flow of my videos from start to finish. But to answer your question, totally, you can easily brew from the XF dripper into the Carter Move, I don't think it'll be a problem at all. Given that both the XF and the Carter are vacuum insulated, the one thing I'd say is that your coffee will stay hot (maybe even too hot) for a long time! But that might be a good thing, depending on how you drink your coffee. Mine never lasts that long ;)

    Excellent video. I too have always used a Kalita 185 but recently switched to a Clever. I love it. The ease of use, the ability to do other things while it's brewing, plus as you say, so very forgiving makes it a great choice. Question. When watching videos using the Clever, I have not seen anyone bloom the coffee with the Clever. Doesn't a bloom make sense even with an emersion brewer? Thanks again and keep those very informative videos coming.

    • @brewingjitsu
      @brewingjitsu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for stopping by! You touched on a great point with blooming, I actually cut my discussion of that from the video for length considerations, but I personally don't think you need to bloom with the Clever. I see the purpose of blooming for percolation methods (e.g., pourover) to allow the coffee to degas, which will limit off-gassing as the brew draws down in subsequent pours. For the Clever, you can control that effectively with the amount of time you let it extract, so I think that it's not necessary. I think the Clever is actually most analogous to the AeroPress. Although some people do recommend blooming with an AeroPress, the amount of people winning Championships without a bloom suggests to me that you don't need to bloom with the Clever either.

      You're totally right, I missed out on the opportunity to share that info. I think that all of the three types can produce great coffee, but here are my takeaways. The Kalita and the Fellow produce very similar coffees, which makes sense if you compare the geometry, filter paper, and hole size. Compared to the V60, these two drippers produce coffee that's has more body and intensity. I think the reason for that is twofold: they both restrict flow to a degree, and they both are going to retain heat better than my ceramic V60. All in all, I think the Kalita and Fellow will be more forgiving at coarser grind settings than the V60, but you won't be unhappy with any of them. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate you stopping by!

      @@brewingjitsu Great info! Would one be more suited than another for different roast levels?

      @@ThunderRunner I think that any of these could work for most coffees, but I think you will get a better control over dark roasts with something that is less restrictive, like the V60. I think you could get great results with any of them, but the V60 will require the most precise grind out of all of them, so that is something worth considering. Thanks for stopping by!!

    great comparison but i prefer kalita glass dripper as i tested in this video th-cam.com/video/Sy87z13fLvE/w-d-xo.html since it has faster flowrate
