Piper M600, flight into and out of Ilulissat Greenland a 2772 foot runway. Gateway to some of the best glaciers in the world. Challenging airport due to short runway and rising terrain in all quadrants. Fun video showing the fun and capable side of light GA travel. Oceanic travel in a light GA aircraft.

    I'm intrigued what your thoughts would be on a constant 3-degree descent profile from TOD, through the approach, to landing. Flying RPT in Australia, at least with my employer, we're required to do this for pax comfort and fuel efficiency purposes, but it's not something I see much of on American youtube flights. Is "dive and drive" the norm? Genuinely curious.

    Steering this aircraft on the ground is by using the rudder which is also linked to the front gear as well as differential braking on the main gear. Handles fairly nicely on the ground, but is no BMW ;-)

    • @alpenpilot2429

      Going up, we had some pretty vicious headwinds, so if I recall we did about 3 hour legs. Stops in Bellingham, Yakutat, and Anchorage. Coming back we had a little bit of a tail wind, so made it nonstop just under 1900 nautical miles in if I recall six hours and 45 minutes. No bathroom on board, just little chemical travel John’s. Those come in handy when necessary

  • @oubeta
    @oubeta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How’s the takeoff with 20’ flaps? I’ve been using 10’ @ 85kts. Doesn’t the book say a ‘normal’ takeoff is 0’ flaps? I’ve always used one notch of flaps, but 20’ sounds like it might be better with the slower rotation speed. I need to get out and practice some slow flight and go arounds. Good stuff and great piloting!

    • @alpenpilot2429
      @alpenpilot2429 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the POH gives data for 0 and 20 degrees of flaps. As you said, most people use 10 which just seems to work. The only thing with 20 degrees is if you pull up gear with a positive rate then flaps flaps, you get the gear warning which passengers don’t like. You can go flaps gear flaps, but is certainly more workload. As a P46T pilot you should be able to execute a short field take off, but is not the most gentle procedure for passengers :-)

    • @oubeta
      @oubeta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alpenpilot I flew it from KOKC to PAKX this past fall. The bush strip is pretty hard packed gravel and it did fine on the landing, But the take offs are a different story. I tried to do a standard soft field takeoff and it was very difficult to keep centered. I ended up having to leave the nose wheel planted on the runway pretty much the entire takeoff roll to keep it centered for some reason. Once I did that, it actually did pretty good on the gravel. Thanks for the info man

    Is there no hardwired backup for the gear indicator lights?

    • @alpenpilot2429
      @alpenpilot2429 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually no hardwired gear information. However the gear can be displayed on any of the 3, 12 inch displays, which are on separate busses, so would be extremely unlikely to get a 3 screen failure. If in doubt, you could always do an emergency gear extension, and assume that you get 3 down and locked. Bad day if you lose all the primary screens ;-)

On the way back with a little push we went Anchorage all the way back to Ogden non-stop. 1865 nm in 6:45. Being a single engine we followed the coastline around instead of direct over the ocean.
