    Blue belt here and I tapped my main black belt training partner for the first time last week calf crunch from twister. He is older and smaller than me and taps me every time we roll. And he was super hyped I got the tap. At the same time I rolled with a 300 pound black belt visitor the other day and I thought he was a purple belt. There are also 20 something black belts who regularly train at my gym so everyone gets better and when a lower belt gets a tap it’s always a hell yeah I wasn’t expecting that and then we go back to training and the tap doesn’t matter.

    • @MyJiuJitsu
      @MyJiuJitsu หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly that's how it should be, because if someone taps you that you didn't think could or was a lower belt it means they are getting better, and in turn so will you because no you have something to look out for. at least thats how we feel.

    Bro they fucked Mikey not by missing weight... He was coming up to 170 to fight Kade! Then Kade pulled out 8 days before (I think tbf) and they tried to make Mikey fight someone else at feather! So he was forced to drop like 25 lbs in x days and basically they stripped him after giving him an impossible weight cut!

    So many reasons and variables why blue belts can beat black belts, but the main reason is mat time and training partners. Also blue belts train weird stuff who is practicing how to get out of a buggy choke?

    A lot of good points about the energy you bring to a situation and how that can change the outcome. When I was a bouncer, my presence was often enough to diffuse a conflict that was clearly heating up. I didn't even have to do anything, just move into their eye line and often things would dissipate. I think it has something to do with the primal part of our brain, where if someone backs down or runs away from a threat they are seen as prey. If that same person steps up then maybe you're the prey.

    • @MyJiuJitsu
      @MyJiuJitsu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha yeah definitely don't wanna be the prey... Think you're spot on. It's fascinating how our presence alone can send powerful signals. The primal part of our brain really does play a huge role When you show that you're calm, collected, and not going anywhere, it taps into that deep, instinctual level.

    I have been a mat enforcer before and it was usually to reign in a visitor who was acting too rough. However, I think most things could be avoided by having a simple conversation before people ever step on the mat. I have been to many schools and even though many will discuss being careful, calm and respectful at some point, many don't make it as a mandatory discussion before you start. As a professor at a college, I review the syllabus and tell the students the rules of the class. It lets people know what they can and cannot do and what the consequences will be. I think incoming students should be told these things so they will be careful. Additionally, if you have an open mat, the visitors should be talked to before they step on the mat and the gym members should be told how to treat visitors too. Often, a person will be handled by a mat enforcer, but will have no idea of why they were handled in such a manner. Often a mat enforcer just protects the rep of the school or punishes someone and a lot of that can be avoided if people talk first.

    Besides from life events and burnout, the achievement of a blue belt is usually viewed as competency. In fact, a few years ago, it could have been viewed as a Black belt in other martial arts. (However, now I think that a Purple belt is probably the same as a Black belt in other martial arts due to the increase in techniques and skills you should know.) Even though there are three other belts to achieve (not including Red Belt), physically, mentally and spiritually, I think we unconsciously know that we have achieved something solid in BJJ when we achieve our Blue Belt. It's like serving in the army for three or four years. You don't need to serve twenty years to prove that you are a soldier or to become the ultimate soldier. You were a soldier and you are capable. Grappling for one, two or three years to achieve a blue belt takes dedication, it's rough on the body and you learn a lot. It is unrealistic to ask someone to stay involved in something that requires an average of $20,000 to complete, 12 to 20 years to achieve and repeating the same cycle (ad nauseam) just to achieve a belt rank. Unless a person has a specific goal (open a gym, give seminars, write books, become a BJJ expert, etc.) that requires a Black Belt, what is the official reason to continue if you do not love grappling? As a Brown Belt (one stripe), I love grappling. However, I will admit that it takes discipline and I have to maintain a level of fitness in order to keep going multiple times a week throughout the year. I have contemplated what I will say when I am promoted to Black Belt. I doubt I will tell them to use it as a goal because, realistically, it shouldn't be. I would tell them to do it as long as they enjoy it and if they want to become a Black Belt then realize that they have to approach that goal as professionally as possible from the outset and realize that it may take them twelve to 20 years if they choose the wrong path. Before starting, if that is the goal, they must choose the right school, professor and approach it like a business if they wish to be a black belt in less than 10 years.

    Man y’all missed a big one why people quit, BJJ cost a lot of money $100 plus for a membership, rash guards, gis, competitions, all cost money. Another reason is hearing people talk about the meta like ego and all that, sometimes people just want to get a workout, get a good scrap, and go home. A lot of average hobbyist aren’t trying to hear some dude in a kimono with no psych degree talk about ego and all that.

      Big Facts! We dropped a ball, but we only have so much time. You hit something spot on with listening to some dude when doesn't have his sheesh together try and give you psychology advice about ego haha, its funny cuz those are the guys that typically have the worst egos. The guys who are more interested in telling you how you should be rather than showing you through their actions.

    Catch wrestling is painful they know some techniques where they will put their chin on your back or their elbow weight on your back. The pain becomes unbearable until you open yourself up for a submissions that they were setting up from that pain. If bjj is the gentle art catch wrestling is it's evil psychotic killer brother where everything hurts.
