Violin with Ivan Galamian - Left Hand Tips #1 | The basics of intonation
Left Hand Tips #1 - The basics of Intonation
The following instructions come from my violin teacher.
He is one of the few violinists still alive who studied with Ivan Galamian and later was able to pursue an outstanding career as a violin pedagogue. Among his many accomplishments:
- Chair of the string department and teacher at one of the most prestigious universities in the US;
- in Summer he regularly holds classes at the Meadowmount School of Music, which was founded by Galamian in 1944 and preserves his legacy to this day;
- he is regularly invited to serve on panels of judges at international violin competitions.

    There are lots of violinists who studied with Galamian around still. They won't be young people now, as he died in 1981, but he taught thousands of students! Remember, most of those people who studied with him will have been young when they did so. Look at the bio of a 60+ year-old violinist or violin teacher who studied in the US, and chances are quite good you'll see Galamian's name.

      Good point. I thought this was just a nuance and that it did not really matter, but since you bring it up..., I should rephrase my opening sentence: "The following instructions come from my violin teacher. He is one of the few violinists still alive who studied with Ivan Galamian and later was able to pursue an outstanding career as a violin pedagogue. Among his many accomplishments: - Chair of the string department and teacher at one of the most prestigious universities in the US; - in Summer he regularly holds classes at the Meadowmount School of Music, which was founded by Galamian in 1944 and preserves his legacy to this day; - he is regularly invited to serve on panels of judges at international violin competitions." Glad you appreciate it. No traces of it in a free .pdf version online unfortunately... But you will find the unabridged version of his article in his biography (a great read, written by Louis Lochner, Macmillan) or in the December 1921 issue of 'the Mentor' magazine (I have seen it on eBay).

    I like this a lot. It does seem to be translated from another language. There are English mistakes. “The more” isn’t anything in English. What did she actually say?

      Thank you!! According to the person sitting in on her class these were her exact words to the child. Her teaching approach was very unique, and she was possibly trying to put her student in a particular mood for playing that piece. (Sometimes an unusual comment will be harder to forget.)

Happy that you could notice how particular my selection is. I recommend also the post with thoughts by Dorothy DeLay. Researching other inspiring sources as well... Thanks!
