How to Make Elegant Decoupage Pumpkins from Styrofoam or Plastic Dollar Forms
HOW TO create this beautiful pumpkin that will take you from October through the end of November
What you need (you probably have most of these already):
- Styrofoam or other artificial pumpkin - I got mine from the dollar store
- Mod Podge
- Paper napkins (use only printed layer)
- Tape measurer
- Sharp pencil
- Scissors
- Foam or artist’s paintbrush and stiff brush like a chip brush
- Gilding size and silver sheets to gild with (I use Amy Howard)
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Elmers or other ‘school’ glue (or keep using Mod Lodge with waxer
50/50 mix)
- Twine
- 1/2” to 1” thick stick for new stem
- Light colored Paint - any type - to cover the orange pumpkin color
STEPS:
1. Remove pumpkin stem. Careful use a knife or tool to punch a hole where the stem was and enlarge it to about 1/2” to 1”.
2. Paint over with a light paint (if your napkin is light) or dark (if your napkin is dark. Just about any paint will do - as long as you can glue over it, so use this project to get rid of those tiny bits you’ve saved fat you do have use for.
3. Measure length and width of each bumpy section on the pumpkin from stem to bottom.
TIP: it should be an elongated diamond shape. Make a template of one and trace onto your napkin over and over.
Cut out.
3. Remove and recycle all but the top printed layer of your paper napkin. Turn over and trace with chalk or pencil your diamond shape.
4. After cutting out a billion (O.K. maybe only 20-25), glue one at a time on raised pumpkin bumps, then glue one down in each valley to create as smooth a surface as possible. Or … you can make it as gnarly and bumpy as you want!
5. Let dry overnight.
6. Using gilding size and silver gilding leaves (mine are from Amy Howard), paint on the size around the stem area and down like veining. When it comes to tack (about 15 mins) lay on your silver leaves and press down. Let sit a few minutes. Use a stiff or chip brush to whisk away excess unglued silver.
7. Find a stick and break it dow to about 3” long and 1/2” to 1” wide depending on you stem hole size. Hot glue in place.
8. Using a small cup or even parchment paper on your table, mix your school glue with about 1 yard of colored twine (mine’s maroon), so that it has glue ALL over it. Pull the twine out of the mix through two fingers to remove excess and immediately wrap the twine around your pencil. Let dry.
9. Gingerly wrap twine around the stem, pulling and arranging with a real or artificial leaf and gluing in place with a dab or two of school glue.
10. ENJOY!

    I have tried to different carrier oils, Grape seed and fraction Coconut oil. I have tried different measurements and my refills still does not smell. I have used from 10-30 drops and they still do not smell. I have decreased the carrier oils and increased the essential oil and they still don’t smell. I always clean my plug in jar and I boil them. I also use new wicks every time. Please help I don’t know what to do and I can’t afford replacements from Bath and Body Works. Have a great day. I have used Cinnamon, Lavender and Lilac

      @ReMadeWithLove 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmmmm...throw synthetic vanilla extract and whatever oil? Could you? No one is stopping you from doing this, but certain items are not good for inhaling and certain oils act/react differently. Using vegetable oil as a carrier for your scent is not a good idea as it's a heavy cooking oil that will gum up any surface that is close to the plug area. It also doesn't let the scent come through as it is heavily scented on its own. Vegetable oils also go rancid faster than other carrier oils. Vanilla extract is not an essential oil, so you've got additives which may act/react differently than essential oils, same as cooking oil does.

    • @ReMadeWithLove
      @ReMadeWithLove 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Healthline.com states (www.healthline.com/health/carrier-oil) jojoba oil is safe, but they are referring to using as a carrier oil for skin absorption. It is reported to have a light nutty smell, so keep that in mind. Additionally, I found at Medical News Today (www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321639) that they state it is one of the best carrier oils for inhalation as well.

    Why not use water instead of a carrier oil? Essential oil are usually water based that is why you can use them by just putting a couple drops in the water pot of a diffuser.

    • @ReMadeWithLove
      @ReMadeWithLove 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From my understanding essential oils are an oil. To become a water-based essential oil (?) they have to change the chemistry and add chemicals to make it water soluble. When reusing a wallflower (or using this wallflower hack) I’m wanting to plug it into a wall outlet and have prolonged, consistent dispersal of the aroma. Since oil and water don’t mix unless emulsified, even if it is temporary, using water as the carrier would not ensure a continuous aroma. The essential oil would gather in one area and either disperse all at once or only after the water has evaporated, not giving you a continuous aroma.

    Thank you just found this video. I'll take it a step further and add that pets are much more sensitive than their people to scents and some are even toxic. Cats are especially vulnerable to tea tree and lots of others, but there's no nos for dogs too. Anybody with indoor pets should do a search on essential oils and cats/dogs. I use sweet almond oil for a carrier because it's usually the cheapest and easily found at discount stores and won't burn even when exposed to direct flame.

      Haha! I hope not!! Thanks for letting us know, Roy. I appreciate hearing from those who make their own wallflower refills. I'm sure you use in small quantities, but I believe others looking should do their research into this synthetic chemical before using it. Europe has banned liquid synthetic propylene's, although the US considers it to be safe, and about 1/2 of the cosmetics in the US have small amounts of Dypropolene Glycol in them. There are some reported side effects (mild) that users should know about.

    • @ReMadeWithLove
      @ReMadeWithLove ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you rinse the old bottle? Use new wicks? Which essential oils did you use? There is a point when the original wallflowers stop working (something in the heating element??), but if you are using the quality items mentioned, it should work - unless your wallflower base has stopped working.😔 I’ve read that fractionated coconut oil has been used with essential oils safely, but only in a non-heated (non-wallflower) venue.

    Can I use reed diffuser oil?

    • @ReMadeWithLove
      @ReMadeWithLove ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @tavery1981, I've done some research on reed diffuser oils and here is what I've found: Reed oils are thinned (as much as 3 times) due to the need to be wicked up by the reed which is very porous and uses a cold diffusing method. Plug in oils need to be thicker, and use a different carrier oil. (reeddiffusers.org) Some sites state that some reed diffuser oils also include alcohol which in a heated plus-in type would rapidly evaporate the fragrance and possibly pose some risk to the device as well as a potential lower flashpoint.

    Have you etched multiple cups in one sitting with this? I want to etch mason jars for a party favor but seems like a lot of work to etch, wait 15 min, wash it all off, and then etch the next one.

    • @ReMadeWithLove
      @ReMadeWithLove ปีที่แล้ว

      You can make multiples of the same stencil and do them at the same time cutting down on wait time. Then wash all and reuse for the next batch.

      @ReMadeWithLove have you tried reusing the stencil without washing them out or would the cream be dried out on the stencil

    • @ReMadeWithLove
      @ReMadeWithLove ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xxsecretdreamerzxx I’ve washed them out. The cream I use doesn’t dry out so I’m not concerned about clogging the screen, but I didn’t want to accidentally pull off cream and potentially transfer it to my next item to be etched when I’m positioning it on that new item. As I’m thinking about this I think I will try reusing multiple times without washing and see what happens. I think if I allow a good amount of edge space on the stencil and am careful with the transition I could get a number of clean etches.

    • @ReMadeWithLove

      Carrier oils help extend the life of essential oils and are a safe way to keep them from accidentally burning. I’ve heard of pure essential oils scorching. Also, do some research into the particular essential oil (see where I mention this in the video) you want to use to make sure a plug in - warming diffuser- is an oil that won’t irritate sensitive lungs or those with asthma. I have a Maker, but at the time of the video I wanted to see how easy it was to cut the felt by hand. It’s doable, but faster and (for me) an improvement on my cutting(!). According to sewwhatalicia.com: YES! You can cut felt with the Cricut Explore and the Cricut Maker. There are more options for cutting felt with your Maker but you can most definitely cut felt on most of your Cricut machines. The Cricut Maker is my go to felt cutting machine. Check out THESE felt bookmarks cut with the Cricut Maker. It’s worth a try! Also, there are different weights of felt and different content (acrylic,wool,etc.) that cuts differently. Happy creating!
