20 plus year landscape contractor here. Been on thumbtack for a couple years now. It works well but you have to work your profile right and be transparent with the customers to weed out the problems you have had. I have those issues too but I lead with Im not the cheapest. If someone picks 4 pros or they give off the red flags that they are just looking for the cheapest dont waste your time. Some are trash but Half of my leads are people that only pick me or people that want quality contractors. You have to have an excellent rating and reviews to achieve that. You also have to be able to sell yourself too. Overall we have had a better experience on thumbtack than Angi/home-advisor but have been successful at both. It does get frustrating from time to time though for the reasons you mentioned but for us at least it works pretty good. But we don’t do any lawn maintenance, mowing trimming ect. My experience has only been landscape/hardscape jobs so don’t know if that’s apples to apples with what you have been dealing with. We don’t even do jobs less than around $1500.
If Thumbtack suspects the job being big, you get charged a minimum of $120 for that lead. The software promotes customers to select multiple contractors so they can charge us more. My results are way better through. I do not know what area you are in, but people trust google reviews more than thumbtack in my area. Everybody I know doing better then me in this industry uses every other form of marketing and thumbtack we stay away from. Thumbtack is extremely expensive.My ratio was 1/10 for jobs quoted to sold. Very bad return on investment.
You can adjust your lead maxes. You also get charged based on what size job the customer says it is not thumbtack. My max is at $67 right now for all services so not sure what you are talking about with that part. I can’t get charged more than that for a single lead. It’s set at $135 total for a week. Do whatever ever works for you though. Just saying it works for me. We are booked out 2 months right now all from thumbtack leads with the smallest job being a 4K job. Our conversation rate is about 50 percent. As long as you are making the money you want do that. I’m in SC btw.

He right but wrong. I'd advise against thumbtack too. Only use it during slow season

Seen a $123 lead cost for a $120 job. Thumbtack is trash, greedy as hell for all services, not just lawn jobs. On one job Thumbtack makes more from all the pros bidding then the whole job is worth. In what world is that ethical?
what’s up with the mower not wanting to run or keep high RPM’s? i noticed that every time u mess with the RPM it goes to high RPM & then lowers after, something don’t seem right. have u tried getting the mower checked out?
