The Arizona Department of Health Services’ mission is to promote, protect, and improve the health and wellbeing of all Arizonans. As part of that mission, ADHS licenses, regulates, and provides assistance to healthcare facilities so they can maintain a high standard of care for Arizona residents. In the event that our efforts to provide coaching and corrective action to licensees are not heeded, we must occasionally take the unfortunate step of revoking a healthcare institution’s license. Recently, we were alerted that a senior living facility in Peoria, Avanti Senior Living, instructed residents to secure alternative living arrangements. The guidance did not provide an explicit timeline and misled residents about when the facility’s license was revoked as well as the reason behind the revocation. Despite having over a year to prepare residents for the possibility of the facility’s closure, it appears Avanti denied the reality and severity of the situation and is attempting to pass this off as a mere paperwork error. ADHS notified Avanti over a year ago that the facility’s unresolved pattern of negligent practices had risen to an unacceptable level, and that to preserve the wellbeing of their residents we would be moving to revoke their license. Throughout the process, the Department was willing to negotiate a settlement agreement to avoid revocation, but Avanti chose to fight the Department’s decision through the judicial process. Two courts subsequently upheld ADHS’ decision to revoke Avanti’s license, and an Administrative Law Judge went so far as to say that the facility’s behavior “demonstrated a blatant disregard for rules, procedures, and law.” She does not care for her residents she is a snake!

I just returned from my 4th Bickford Family Reunion...would have been my 5th if it weren't for COVID. It's everything Andy and Alan describe, and then some!! So is Bickford Senior Living. I opened one of their new Branches, in Virginia Beach, over 4 years ago. After 33 years in this industry, this has been my favorite, most rewarding, and gratifying Director/Administrator position. The story behind this care and love focused organization is like no other, and I'm extremely proud to be a part of it and to serve so many families in need and some in crisis. Thank you.

Love this beautiful song that touches my heart.I lost my Dad to Parkinsons in February of 2022 and I lost my Mom to thyroid and lung cancer combination in January of 2010 .I miss them very much and I still cry about my Dad and the way I took care of my Mom in her last few days.Thank you Jay for sharing your beautiful story about your parents. I want to also say Jay out of the bottom of my heart I appreciate the complement you give all us caregivers. I have been a CNA for 29 years and it is most rewarding when a resident can't remember anything but your name and bits and pieces of things. As a resident of a CCRC ( Kendal ) I found this too abstract and would have benefited by some examples and an actual application in addition to your speakers talking about it in the abstract. Most senior citizens do not know what virtual reality is. We are not generally tech savvy. Many of us do not have a computer and had a big problem with such tech as ZOOM. I wish you had included an example of the application.

What was the book?

After years and years of taking care of persons with dementia. I couldn’t agree more with Dr Cameron. We adopted the Montessori approach to care in my workplace. I can’t tell you what a massive difference this has made to our residents and clients. It was life changing for me as a caregiver. I pray this is only the beginning of great changes to come when we think about our loved ones living with dementia. Each and everyone of us needs to live a purposeful life . We need to LIVE until we die.

Always so informative...keep learning more and more about how to present this "heartfelt" information for caregivers so they can help their dementia patients...and themselves. Yes, indeed, the 3-pronged approach to Dementia Care is a "win-win" situation. I love this program!
