Africa Overland is an overlanding travel channel run by regular working guys who are passionate about exploring the paths less travelled. We take our stock standard vehicles which we have kitted out to suit our overlanding needs. For us the joy is in missioning to the lesser know places and connecting with new communities and new places.
Overlanding began in Africa and we'd like to invite you to follow us as we bring it back home.

This is one of the areas we still need to explore. This series of videos gets me closer to planning a trip
Hey Martin! This is Tim from Troopy in Africa. This is a Chanel with mates Simon & Mike. We did these when I still owned the Fortuner. We as a group will be heading to Bots next year. If you need info you welcome to DM me on instagram.
@@africaoverland awesome. Will definitely get some tips and info from you. Just have to decide on dates first. Thanks for the reply

Nice fortuner ❤
Thanks James. If you interested you can also check out Tim's fortuner on the same channel🤙Fortuner is a great platform for overlanding.
Great in depth narrative of the Ineos. I plan on delivery of mine in a couple weeks.
Thanks Jef🤙. You living the dream. Miles of Smiles to you for when you get it. We loved the car. Hoping we can do a review of the pick up version now.

What a bunch of good people. Trips with you guys must be fun, more fun and even more fun. And it was very honest opinion of the car and good points what need to be made different.
Thank Dude! To be honest we feed off Mike's ADHD personality 🤣. Sadly with work and build our businesses we are struggling to find time to head out together. Hopefully soon🙏. Tim does have another chanel @troopyinafrica if you keen. We're also reaching out to Ineos to take a look at their Pick up version of the Grenadier. You can also check out our review of having driven the actual car.
Thank you for your interesting review. I am seriously considering replacing my 2021 3.0l Defender D250 110 which has been very reliable and comfortable over several long overland trips in Morocco, Europe and Iceland. I am looking for the Grenadier to give me a lot more comfort than my older 'classic Defenders' and also feel more part of the driving experience than my current 110. What would be really helpful in making a decision to buy a Grenadier versus keeping or replacing the Defender is to understand how the Grenadier is on and off-road fully loaded for an overland trip. I have yet to see any such reviews. Any help or links on this point would be much appreciated.
Tim & Mike were actually with Scott Brady of Overland Journal & Expeditional Portal fame on Friday night. He will be travelling through Africa the next year in a grenadier. Yes is on Instagram and will be making youtubes he says. He also said he plans to be super honest about his experience with the Grenadier. Other than this I suspect video will start coming out soon.
If you want to know the quality of the car... try it in the desert and mountains of Saudi Arabia... I don't think it's better than Toyota!
Thanks Ali. I think a lot of us are wondering that 😀, Mike, Tim & Simon are all Toyota drivers 👍
Nice 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you. Been gone for a while. Tim now has a Landcruiser 78 Troopy @troopyinafrica 🤙
Great review! The most thorough I’ve seen!
Thank you Jeffrey B🤙
Had mine just over a month now, 2000+ miles and rising. My only real criticism is the fuel economy, which is worst than my old LR110CSW 200Tdi running on SVO, its well screwed together, very comfortable and can be very fast for 2.7T! On the road it is quiet, smooth and easy to drive.
Hi Jeremy, Thank you for leaving a note here. I will pin this to the top for all to see. What is your fuel consumption you getting?
The most expensive utilitarian vehicle every made. I so wanted to grenadier but the price is ridiculous. Instead of getting a few on the road; they done the opposite and charged so much they created more a ranger Rover for the rich. Dumb
Time will tell.
So now I know what or rather whom Moira Rose sounds like; the first driver! Can just picture him saying, "a disgruntulllled paingwaaan!"
From Moira .... whaaatsz uppp bruther!!!
Mike enjoyed that one 😂
Did I hear 13.5 m / 44.3 feet turning radius? If so, not as good as what I had expected/hoped for on a clean sheet off road design.
Hey Cliff, Yes that is what he said. But in fairness it being solid axle and not independent suspension might have a part to play. The 70 series is 14,4m / 47.24ft VS the new defender which is only 12,84m / 42.13. Loads of people would prefer the solid axle we suspect.
Awesome video guys. Easily the most in-depth walk around and discussion I’ve seen on TH-cam from real enthusiasts. This is basically the only car on my radar that I would look at purchasing to replace my Defender. I’m definitely excited to experience one first hand.
Thanks RS🤙. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully we will be let back in in September to drive the "Bakkie" (truck) version.
Did they ever fix the visibility out of the side windows especially in the rear seats?
Nope still the same for tall people
@@africaoverland The Ford Bronco is about $20k cheaper anyway haha
Need to raise the whole top about 4 or 5 inches…. More tall people window visibility, more headroom, and added interior rear capacity. This would be for us off roaders/overlanders, not the status symbol grocery getter/mall crawlers.
New... "Hands free" descent...
😂🤙
Ok, this model, at least, so way too "upmarket" for an actual off-road user.
Time will tell. Thanks for watching
Has this man ever driven a car?! He’s appalling!!
Hey Chris, are you talking about us or the sales guy?
Also drove it my negatives 1) Foot well is tight 2) No lumbar support 3 No center arm rest at rear 4) Drive seat adjustment is fiddly 5) Rear view camera is tiny for such a large screen. Otherwise what a car.
We some similar concerns. Didn’t pick up the camera, or that it even had one🤙
@@africaoverland also didn't understand the tiny glove compartment and no where to put phone if no phone holder
Best review of IG to date.... well done lads.
Thank man for watching 🤙
Lol the Ineos guy had no idea what priming the engine is for when you ran out of fuel. Semi worrying....
Think he may be a sales guy. At least our drive companion had a bit of a response
Comprehensive review. IG is the 'dogs nuts' especially in terms of offroad capability. The ONLY issues I have is in terms of durability of the engine/driveline and cooling system in HOT offroad conditions, especially when towing. This will be a deal breaker for many people in OZ, which we will not get a good read on until 2-5 years down the track. Long range fuel tank and water storage is also an issue given the lack of underfloor space. Battery is higher than the old Defender (passenger's seat box) which was never an issue even in deep water crossings.
Spot on, we had some similar reservations 🤙
A $7000 Russian made Lada Niva 4x4 can do 80% of what this can do. This car is way too expensive for who they want to sell to. I think this will be a bust especially since you can get a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco or certain off-road pickups for half the price
Niva Lada is a great car. We don’t get the bronco here. Guess it will be up to the public in the end
Nope. The status symbol grocery getter mall crawlers will come through….
If a Defender and a Hummer had a baby
😂
Great review guys , what about the oil filter , is it easily accessible ? also can a catch can be fitted to the engine breather on the diesel ?
Sorry DuncNZ we were looking at those things, but didn’t get time to explore that as they rushed us (7:12) into a briefing and then forgot about it after🙈. But having looked at the footage again slowly one can see there is not much real estate to mount a catch can. But I am certain Terrain Tamer or someone will come up with a bracket 🤙
Wheel studs or wheel nuts? Where does the long range fuel tank fit?
Studs or nuts we did fine out sorry. As for long range tank they seemed to think there was space behind the rear bumper. We spoke of using it as water tank space but I guess someone will create a long range tank maybe🤷🏻♂️
I think I’d like it more if it wasn’t trying so desperately hard to look like a Defender. It just ends up looking like a Chinese knock off defender, my biggest concern is it’s from a company that’s never made a car before which brings its own issues, but if sales after the initial buzz aren’t what they hope will they get bored and pack it in?
We found to to be far from a “knock off”. Serious engineering has been done. WRT reliability and longevity only time will tell.
Hey guys. BMW nutter here. 6:37 is a an oil cooler. They're notorious for leaking badly and you need to replace the hoses and o rings often. Even as a BMW enthusiast, I'm a bit disappointed they chose a BMW engine for harsh off road use. They're not dependable enough with their plastic cooling systems, constant gasket oil leaks, PCV valve issues and timing chain issues. I wouldn't be a fan of owning one for too long if I was using this vehicle in extremely harsh, remote areas.
Thanks for the input. Oil Cooler 🤙. Time will tell on reliability 🤙
V6?? Are you sure??? From BMW??? 😮
3.0L B58 inline 6 petrol engine and the 3.0L B57 inline 6 diesel engine
@@africaoverland Correct. The narrator said V6.
Er.... Inline 6 not v6
They do a commercial 2 seater
One of the things that would be a worry, how much plastic is under the bonnet? BMW use alot on road cars, but is it upto off-road use? What have INEOS changed? Haven't seen much about that yet
Thanks
Yes waiting to see that one
Good point 🤙
This is a brilliant car, BMW engines are good i don't think they can cause major problems, remember when land rover was owned by BMW the defender at a point in time was fitted with BMW engines , this a good car, also their are not that many landrover dealerships in remote areas of Africa
Fair point on dealerships, but we have travelled in africa with defenders and had any local workshop do work on any of our Landrover or Landcruiser because they are basic. They don’t need to hook it up to a diagnostic machine.
Got my test drive booked, just waiting for the software upgrade and then again so in love with my 110 😜
Great vid guys... but you've triggered me haha when are people going to realize toyota vdj engines are as unreliable and complex and anything else. Far out, the toyota obsessive wank fest is getting old. If they didnt have a long rectangle body no one in their right mind would bother with one. The bmw engine has been proven for longer than the toyota (if you actually check your facts), as has the 8hp ZF gearbox they are using. Do some research and see how reliable and bullet proof that powertrain is. See what other cars its in and what sort of power and torque its been producing/coping with. The fear of "overlanding" reliability is just defunct. It no less risky that taking a 200 series, or 76/9. learn to fix/trouble shoot what you have, rule number one of remote touring. No car is perfect. You also dont have to drop the purchase price again on top to make it useable. You can drive straight to the tracks with a warrantee.. You can literally throw a second battery in this (hook it right up to the pre wired ctek), bolt your roof topper on, throw your fridge in, plug it straight in and hit the tracks equipped with factory lockers, winch, snorkel, great performance on and off road and genuine comfort. How a toyota wagon is even in the question with this is beyond me.
Emerson thank you for your comment. We mentioned Toyota because it is what we are familiar with. We also mentioned the old Landrover defender which Mike is familiar with. Both these forms of utilitarian vehicles were mentioned as the inspiration for this vehicle so it would seem fair to compare. As for engine and gear box which similar utilitarian vehicles use these drive trains off-roading?
@@africaoverland fair enough- as for the engines for off-roading, i struggle to see how that makes a difference. the stresses of high performance street cars far exceed what this application will place on one. look what the bmw x5 diesels put out and what stress they place through the 8hp. Land Rover has used the 8HP for about 10 years as well if you have a look. Discovery 4, 5 and equivalent range rovers. Driving a car across the Simpson Dessert or through the African plans doesnt make an engine /gearbox less reliable/capable. its an extremely proven platform- that's my point. One with many more years than the vdj. Which is by no means trouble free...(another point that we seem to pretend doesn't exist) Lastly if you want to see what the bmw engine platform can handle in offload abuse, look up some Romanian off road channels they have been using these engines for years in their Nissan patrols... Aggressively....
It’s not a ‘compact V6’. It is a straight six.
Thanks 🤙
Awesome review. Best and most comprehensive review I have seen, anywhere. Thanks lads! Mine will arrive soon in Australia. Super excited! 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it. Miles of smiles with your new car🤙
Good review. I appreciate you sharing.
Not a problem. Loved every minute 🤙
BMW common rail injection engines like the bb57 as fitted to the Grenadier are self priming just cycle the ignition a couple of times should do the trick. I>e> turn on wait 30 seconds then crank turn off then repeat a couple of times.
Thanks man. Good to know🤙
Nice 214270
Thank you
45:15 in, lack of an insulated shield for the positive battery terminal is a surprising omission given the battery location. That would be high on my priority list to fix.
Well spotted 🤙
just remember, this is still a prototype vehicle
@dieterreuter576 Not a demonstrator ? The prototypes had yards of thermocouple cables, data loggers, 3D printed plastic components, E-stop buttons and dire warnings of no airbags. Surely this example is the finished article, minus the ever delayed final software?
@@philhealey4443 this is NOT a production vehicle, it's still pre-production (PT02 means Production Test, but not a final product version) and no customer is allowed to drive it legally on-roads. Final product will be different in some details for sure, but it's a good indicator how the final product will look like.
@@Dieter.Reuter Thanks for your clarification.
Good ramble guys. Mine is due July/August. Going for the 2 seater commercial utility wagon. It can be registered as a commercial vehicle so doesn’t attract 1st registration luxury tax here in the U.K. Not sure whether the Trialmaster and Fieldmaster are exempt, so worth checking out before going that route. The 2 seater has a flat floor the whole way through to the steel mesh cargo bulkhead behind the front seats. A competent fabricator can then make a split level shelf, so rifle cases can be stowed out of the way of prying eyes, leaving the top deck for other lighter kit. I also spoke to Red Winches who produce the bespoke winch for the Grenadier. My concerns were that the supplied (expensive) winch was somewhat limited by the 15m rope capacity. However, they thoroughly tested the winch and it never let them down. But they also pointed out that the winch is a self recovery winch, NOT a general recovery winch, so think carefully before hitting that option box thinking you’re getting a full on winch with 50m of line. Under European legislation, fitting a winch to a vehicle as OE fitment is incredibly difficult, as Red Winches and Magna Steyr found to their cost, particularly when trying to comply with Pedestrian Impact regs. This is why the Grenadier winch is fitted in the front chassis cross member as opposed to externally. BUT, and here’s the kicker, you can fit your own winch as an aftermarket item as long as it’s for “Off Road Use Only”, and Red Winches are about to announce their new Nomad winch which can be ordered with an Ineos fitting kit. This will offer double the rope capacity as well as leaving Ineos litigation free since the winch will be an aftermarket item and not OE. Apparently the electrics box where the rear seats would be is meant to be waterproof, but I’ve yet to clarify that with my supplier. The auxiliary battery also lives in the same space. Makes sense (to me) to put all that in one place.
Wow! Thank you Robin for that amazing insight! I think loads of people will be interested in the above info. Miles of smiles when you do get it and please DM us a pic on Instagram when you get it. Would love to see it.
That was a great rig Tim! I see you constructed your drawer system yourself. Any tips on the design or templates to follow? Thanks!
Yes certainly. Send us an email at africaoverlandinfo@gmail.com or DM us on Instagram
The left leg position is a deal breaker for me, Ill know more when I get a test drive later in April...
And something you wouldn’t realize until you sit in the drivers seat. That said Tim didn’t notice it on the test drive.
@@africaoverland Yes I watched out for Tim's comment on the left foot and he seemed fine. I'm not that tall, so it may be not as much of an issue as I imagine.
To be honest, most folks who seem to have an issue with this are either unusually tall, or (how shall I put this) on the heavy side. The Grenadier does look to have quite a compact/snug interior for such a large car. I can see many of us going on diets to get more comfortable! 🙂
@@atavachron27
I thought it would be a major concern as well ,but when I did an extended test drive I found I didn't even notice it.
Engine Bay and layout on 7.01 reminds me of a Landrover Discovery 2 4.0/4.6. The pulleys and ABS unit
Interesting, haven’t had a look at that model
I can't get past the light grey headliner and pillars. I hope they bring out an all black interior option, even at additional cost. It reminds me of the LC79 grey interior, which I have always hated and which I know many others do also. They 'almost' nailed it.
I am certain it must be a option on the configurator
@@africaoverland Nope. It comes with a choice of black leather seats or standard seats, but either option comes with the same light grey headliner and pillars only.
Brilliant review fellas! Good to see you back on the channel. Your reaction to the Grenadier’s capabilities mirrored my own, I was blown away, radical indeed! Can’t wait to get one.
Thank you for the kind words 🙏
Is the back cargo space bigger than a 76 series? Any difference if you remove the rear seats?
Yes bigger than a 76
We suspect so, and Mike H has also confirmed. Mike’s 76 is in for bodywork if we find it to be bigger we will let you know here.🤙
Thanks
