Bobbin lace pattern designing and making.
One Way to Wind and Hitch Lace Bobbins
The first bobbin is wound with as much thread as it will carry. The trick is not to load the bobbin with too much thread which makes the thread wider than the head. This can cause the thread to skip over the head and get tangled. The second bobbin I wind only the top half of the neck, usually with a meter or less of thread. This is usually enough for my designs, leaving me with only one bobbin with waste thread on. The full bobbin simply refills the empty one as needed.
The hitch uses two loops around the neck.
Different bobbins, thread weights, twists, thread content, and plies can call for different hitches.
Do not be concerned when I say I drop the bobbin on the floor, I am not smashing the beads on ceramic tiles, or throwing the thread into muddy footprints! There is a special little quilt just for the job, I wind so many bobbins, that this gives me the fastest way to measure. Here's my rough guide.
Drop from the waist - sitting = 60cm
Drop from the bust - sitting = 90 cm
Drop from the waist - standing = 1 meter
Drop from the bust - standing = 1.25 meter.

Christmas Stocking 1 - Starting and adding the Red Thread. The red and green gimp pairs are used as single threads, not worked as pairs. Each single bobbin follows it's own path. Start by working the first top row of pins only. This can be with any edge stitch you like. I used a simple half stitch, pin, half stitch, hanging the pairs on temporary pins above the top pins. The stitches need to ha...

Christmas Stocking 2 - Turning and Ending the Green Threads. The red and green gimp pairs are used as single threads, not worked as pairs. Each single bobbin follows it's own path. The green threads are being thrown out (ended) and they need to lie alongside each other for several pins until they are more securely held together, being secured by the double twist on the workers and maybe a few m...

Christmas Stocking 3 - Crossing the Red Gimp Thread. The red gimp pairs are used as single threads, not worked as pairs. Each single bobbin follows it's own path. The red threads are being crossed, and need to lie alongside each other until they reach their opposing sides. If you choose to end the red threads here, lay them together until they reach the sides, this way, the thickness of the thr...

Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund. Part 9 - The Finished Big Hearted Dachshund. Ooops! I didn't press the button to record sewing the ear on! This is the final video of the little Dachshund with its big shiny heart, and long, floppy ear. Make the ear from the separate ear pattern, I chose to use a half stitch in the middle. Work from the bottom of the ear to the top. Cast off along the top by t...

Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund. Part 8 - Throwing Out Pairs and Starting the Tail This is where we need to throw out all the ground pairs. Using the long edge below the tail, the worker pair changes with a ground pair at each edge pin. I work this sort of finish with the edge on the left so I can choose the second and forth bobbin to throw out each time. There is an extra long, extendable ve...

Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund. Part 7 - Working the Front Paw. You can work this paw any way you like, this is just the way I chose. Using the edge pairs and passives, work along one side of the paw. Work a pin a couple of times to go around the end of the paw. Work back up to the body, sewing the worker pair into the center pin hole of the other, already worked, side. There is an extra lon...
Dachshund 6 - Closing the Heart
มุมมอง 1142 หลายเดือนก่อน
Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund. Part 6 - Closing the coarse gimp thread along the side of the heart. The two ends are laid along the open ground pairs, crossing over each other. The open ground pairs are then closed with their two twists and return to making the ground as normal. The ends of the coarse gimp thread are held between the twists together. Gently tension and lay aside, waiting to...
Dachshund 5 Shaping the Top of the Heart.
มุมมอง 3012 หลายเดือนก่อน
Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund. Part 5 - Working the Sequin Heart Valley. The dip (valley) at the top of the heart gives a well defined shape to the heart but the thick thread needs to work 'uphill' for a stitch. This is not a Torchon technique, and you can simply round the top of the heart if you wish to leave it out. There is an extra long, extendable version of this pattern. This is my fr...

Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund. Part 4 - Sequin Heart with Shiny Thread surround. This heart can also be made using half or cloth stitch, by using just the coarse gimp thread, or simply left out completely. The plain Torchon ground used for this pattern gives free rein for you to choose a different ground, add spiders, some rose round, play about with the Torchon ground area as no extra bobb...

Big hearted Bobbin Lace Dachshund part 1. Starting a cloth stitch nose which changes to Torchon ground. A two worker pair edge (pin under 4) is used throughout but can be made with a single pair twisted at the pin. Using the 'false footing' and single thread methods of adding pairs. Replace plastic comb binding with ribbons.
มุมมอง 3783 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ribbon replaces comb binding on a bound book. I received a vintage book bound with plastic comb which had perished and broken apart. Using ribbon to hold the book together, I found I preferred the ribbon version. These plastic combs are useful in binding school projects, catalogues etc but I really don't like seeing them on my bookcase. They don't sit nicely with 'proper' books which have title...

Comment faire pour avoir la version française
Muchas gracias por los videos
bonsoir, comment savoir où poser l'épingle sur les bords , ce n'est pas marqué par un point, désolée, je ne parle pas anglais
Hi,the dots are dictated by the ground. The ground pairs follow the grid and where they meet the edge,or need to be added/taken out, or turned to go back into the ground is where the pins go. This changes a lot on an organic shape and the Torchon grid does not allow for these irregularities so the lace maker has to make the choice. The outer pin is placed as evenly as possible. I have not marked the pins on this piece because my intention was to show how a piece is worked out when made for the first time.
Merci beaucoup
I wish you explained how you finished it at the end. Do you tie another knot on the bottom? Or were you explaining how to do the whole thing backwards, and you start with the ribbon folded in half on one end to start and tie the end.
Thanks for the great idea.
Start with the center of the ribbon, work the spine, tie a knot/bow to end.
Thanks, I have books with plastic comb binder which isn't looking good, your video gives a splendid alternative
I need me one of those for my couch lol dp many dropped pins
Thanks so much for this video, it was fascinating! I've always been fascinated by bobbin lace and before now never found any videos which make any attempt to explain how it works or how to do it! Do you have any recommendations for resources for beginners?
Jo Edkins has a wonderful website where l learned a lot as a beginner www.theedkins.co.uk/jo/lace/index.htm
@@LesleysLace Amazing! Thank you so much!
I've been wanting to learn how to make bobbin lace and this video taught me a lot 😊 ty
Thanks, it's a very good idea. Thanks for your videos too. God Bless
Me encantó esta manera de implementar , algo nuevo e innovador!!! Me gustó muchísimo!!!...Te molesta que yo lo pueda realizar en unos de mis trabajos??? ...Muchas gracias por compartirlo!
Hi Lesley, I hope this isn't a really silly question, but how many pairs of bobbins are you using here. I have 12 pairs but should I be using 14 or even 16 for this section?
14 pairs

I'm really stuck and can't find the third video. How do I continue with the edging in the curve of the torso to the front of the first leg and still continue my ground stitch across the entire width of the elephant? I could really use a video for that part.
That video got deleted by mistake. 😢 Sentd me a pm and l will try and help
This was very clear and easy to follow. Thank you!

BRILLIANT!!!!
I am a recent subscriber to your channel, and have found that every video I watch of yours is a pleasure to watch, for the originality of the work, your way of presenting, and simply because of the lace itself. As someone who had to learn bobbin lacemaking via books and online videos, I very much appreciate when the pattern is interesting, and the instructions/movements are as clear and informational as as the way you present them in your clips. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
So pleased these help you.
This is so interesting to see! I know crochet and knitting, bit of macrame, so this is very different and interesting to see! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 😊
Creating of lace is a pure magic!

Thank you Jenny. That means a lot to me, I learned to make Torchon lace with your own lovely videos! ❤

Brilliant! I don't need any more lace pillows as I tend to make circular or rectangular edgings and have roller inserts for my cookie pillows, but I'm going to keep this in mind because you never know when you might want to use one.
and now I'm thinking a toilet roll one might be good for needlelace....
Thank you so very much !! Corners/angles are generally rarelly explained, and they are so important ! Fantastic way of doing it ! Yasmina 🙏🏻☀️

Oops! The plait twisted and hid the little picots on the final screen but the main white thread photo shows clearly what single picots look like.

Thank you so much for the tips regarding saving threads.
