Steamer Portland Sternwheeler: Portland to St. Helens
มุมมอง 8K10 ปีที่แล้ว
The Steamer Portland, the vintage, sternwheel, tugboat, owned and operated by the Oregon Maritime Musuem, made its way down the Willamette and Columbia Rivers to the Maritime Heritage Festival in St. Helens, Oregon. Dozens of people, including my wife, mother-in-law, and I went along. This is my video of that trip, and it is the first video I ever uploaded to TH-cam. I used a Sony HDR-PJ650V ca...
This is my favorite video of the Sternwheeler Portland I've seen so far! Great job sir!
Thank you! I’m happy you enjoyed it.

My dad was captain of the Portland when it was a working tugboat. I have many happy childhood memories going along with him on some of the jobs. The Portland was magnificent to see in action!
I toured The Portland on 2/24/2016 and was fascinated by it as I am a steam enthusiast but know most about British and American Steam Locos. It has been so long since I smelled coal being burned that I doubt I would recognize it now. I understand that The Portland was built to run on Bunker C. If I remember my old school days properly, the boilers at the school operated on heavy oil also and the smell was unique. This was a lovely video. I notice that the boys got that PT Boat up and running quite nicely. Thank you so much for your effort. We used to have boats, and St Helens or over on the island was our favorite place.
Allen, You have done a great job on the tape of the PORTLAND! You are a natural. I have a couple on youtube myself and you have given me some great ideas. Well done. Dave Dorsey
David Dorsey Thanks, David, for the kind words. Part of my preparation was watching YOUR video from 2013, so thanks for the help.
Oh, Allen, how glorious! This is a superb film about the annual trip of the noble Portland Steamer ship cruising down (though going north, it seems like up) the Willamette River to join the Columbia, and then on westward to the Maritime Heritage Festival in St. Helens. The videography is excellent, and your music selections are splendid. Thank you for filming your happy, happy day on these rivers, the best rivers in the world, rivers that to me mean Home. Because I haven't been able to visit them on my own lately, it means all the more to be able to share this sweet adventure through your offering here. My heart began to fill at the dock from where your journey began in the City of Portland, seeing Mt. Hood floating above the Willamette on this beautiful, peaceful day. What a delight to see the river perspective as you cruised along and the Burnside and Steel Bridges lifted their gates to give your vessel room to pass under, while the Broadway and Fremont bridges were high enough without having to halt car traffic for you. Oh, how lovely, the St. John's Bridge! As you moved into the Columbia from the Willamette and let your lens absorb Mt. Hood, I began to sob with love for this Beauty that is Oregon, that is this great river, and this exquisite white volcano made of ice and fire, a sentinel over the rivers, a blessing over us all. All of it is blessed. What fun to follow you into the boiler room, imagining what the engineer or skipper might have been saying, then up to the Wheelhouse itself where Judy was taking pictures of her own and interacting with the wheelman/pilot, who looked quite proud and happy. Of course, it was charming to see you docking for festivities in the town of St. Helens. What a great treasure day with you and Alison and Judy. I thank God that you belong to this family. You are a blessing too, Allen, to share your interests, gifts and skills as you do. Thank you. It will take hours for me to stop smiling and tend to other things . . .
Alla Bozarth Thank you, Alla, for your warm and generous comment. I see why Judy always speaks highly of you.
