In 1988, toen het Nederlands elftal de finale van het EK won werden de legendarische woorden gesproken: ‘dit is een goed stel hoor’. Precies dat dacht ik toen ik deze versie van dit Kerstlied hoorde. Fabelachtig mooie compositie van dit stel van De Vries!

Thanks so much for this, Sietze! What you say about the backwards way in which music is now usually taught in the Western world reminds me of my childhood piano lessons. My teachers could tell that ai had a good musical ear, but were horribly afraid of my learning to play "by ear," and so insisted on reading music being the center of my learning process. It actually proved to be rather cumbersome -- especially as ineptly as they went about it! -- and really held me back. I finally developed fluency in reading music when ai took up the clarinet, and later was able to transfer that skill back to the keyboards. But now it's so clear to me that my teachers should have worked with my gifted ear, rather than avoid it.

Interesting take by Sietze, that the route to learning to improvise is to learn to "play" the instrument before ever learning to read a score. This reflects my own experience where I started by listening to the hymns in church and then tried to duplicate what I heard on the reed organ at home. (Every Dutch family in Canada had one) I still recall that "Jesus lover of my soul" was my first successful attempt and then I broadened out from there. Eventually I started to connect the dots and sort of figured out what the symbols in a score were telling me. I did eventually take "proper" organ lessons which opened the door to Bach at which point there was no holding me back. But the side effect of learning to play this way is that I can still harmonize any melody by ear and can "noodle" away for hours (I wouldn't call it improvising) which I delighted in doing as a teenager and to this day.

Diese Interpretation von Sietze de Vries von Jakob Praetorius "Was kann uns kommen an für Noth" auf der Wegscheider-Orgel der Kirche Sankt Jakobi in Stralsund paßt genau in unsere Zeit, weshalb es hier sorgfältig zuzuhören gilt.

In de jaren 70 had ik een grammofoonplaat met beide koororgels in Muri. Helaas weggedaan....! Nog wel een cd met het grote Metzler orgel! 1966! met Heinz Balli als organst!
