Framing My ALL ALUMINUM Front Deck! pt.1 | Salvage to Savage #7
Finally getting started on the next crucial step of the StarCraft build, the front deck! I'm splitting this video into two parts because I want to work on the hatches before getting too far into the deck, I feel that building the deck around the dimensions of the hatches will be easier than fitting the hatches into the deck.

Got the same Boat same Color but it is 20' put a new Transom in and now the Floor Total suck Nice Video
Thanks for sharing. I am doing a 30 x 30 pole barn
the foam is going well and to see it on the water
I just got a Scrambler 850 & had this plow mounted.
Sweet! I think you’ll like it, I sure do
@@savagesenseoutdoors Turns out the Scrambler had no power steering. So, they let me trade for a Sportsman 850 Ultimate Trail. I'm supposed to be getting a big raise, so I still have my eye on the Scrambler!
Badass! My machine is a base so nothing fancy on mine. It’s good to hear that your dealer was willing to trade up given the situation!
Nice
Rebar under... not inside... the concrete is pointless
The rebar was sitting on 2 1/4” chairs actually, thanks for the comment👍🏻
With aluminium hulls you want water to freely drain. The best solution here is to fill the compartments with empty plastic milk bottles.
Working aluminum can be counterintuitive…It tends to gald from the heat when you use a saw with too FINE a tooth. Coarser wood blade will throw off the heat with the chip it throws off. Enjoying the series, love those old aluminum boats
Thanks man! I really need to order material for the hatches and get to it
Price doesn’t include concrete I’m assuming. Rain comes through my roll up door at the top, and dark roof absorbs heat and releases it inside.
Correct. Concrete is in another video. I’ll probably switch to overheads in the future and I’m going to insulate it next summer too.
Another way to do this (that would have given you a perfect glossy top finish that wouldn’t need paint) would be a sheet of ply + poly sheet with a hole in the Center. Pour through the hole and the excess will come out the same hole. Works perfectly.
I do wish I spent a little more time to research and do the foam better, hopefully it lasts a long time the way I did it though😬 I guess it’ll be a learning lesson if not.
I just did this same type of framing for my 16’ deep v. I got my flush series hatches from dpi marine, which I have not installed yet.
Very nice! I considered buying hatches, but they’re so expensive.. I’m going to build mine using tiny boat nations dry hatch material
The same company did my 30x30. I opted for insulated roof, one 10x10 roll up at the front and 7x7 out the back. 2 windows on each side and a side door. I just ran power to it. Put up 2 ufo lights and half of the receptacles. The installers did a great job. Finished in one day. 7am-7pm nonstop. The only thing I regret is not going with the thicker gauge sheet metal.
what company did your install?
@@AllAroundLawnServicellcAmerican Steel Carport. I'm trying to get a walk around video to post it in a few days
What was the cost of you don’t mind me asking
@Trying2Grow the building was shy of 17k
@@Trying2Grow I think it was $14k. Got a veterans discount
Holy shit guys new savage sense outdoors video, Its been so long!
Rude
Also how skinny could you get in this? In general. I want to build mine for duck hunting out of
Will the foam help you draft less and run skinnier or just help you not sink?
COSTED ME ABOUT 4500!!
Can water get between the foam and the aluminum? If it stays wet there corrision may be an issue.
@@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030 Good point… I actually was asking US composites this week about shrinkage, and they said if your mix isn’t 50/50, it CAN shrink after a week or so. That would for sure cause problems. On the other hand, it’s very sticky, so if you cleaned the inside of the boat fairly well (get rid of grease etc.) it should be OK, at least in terms of water between the foam and the aluminum.
Does it state on the bottle how much to mix in order to fill a certain size space, (volume)? BTW, good info in your videos. I am doing the same type of restoration on a 1981 Starcraft Mariner 18 center console. Should start the floatation install next week....
I don’t believe there was a specific amount of liquid / volume of foam ratio, if you order more foam than you need you could definitely do some test runs in a box or something? Otherwise it’s really just trial and error, it was in my case at least lol
Thank you for the tips. Vibrater saw and pour more then less good to know. Side note. The surrounding look. Very western washington.. I live in east Kent.
Some other people dropped good tips in the comments I wish I followed, some said to put plywood on top of the cell so you don’t have to cut and it’ll stay a sealed cell that way as well instead of opening the cell when I cut it
@savagesenseoutdoors there is videos out there that show that working perfectly. Then the disaster of it not. From what I have gathered as the foam expands it hardens, bottom still liquid top slightly firm pressure from below the foam expanded too fast and lifted the deck. About 3 inches. That was a fiberglass boat..if your still with me. My boat is built like yours. Use scrap plywood that covers a few compartments and cut a 2 inch wide 2 foot long hole width wize. Then put oil or plastic wrap on the underneath side of the plywood so foam don't stick clamp inplace pour a few, lift and continue. Thoughts?
I’ve never tried it any other way brother so I can’t say for sure unfortunately how well any other way will work
@@savagesenseoutdoors I am nervous as you about this. Fingers crossed 🤞
Everything on amazon is 4 1/2 stars , even junk
Your gravel was a steal. down here the gravel would have been dam near 8000 by it self
Damn! That bit of gravel was not good either though.. I found another company who got me 20T for $360, much better deal and they brought me better rock too.
@@savagesenseoutdoors wow. I wish i could buy it in your area and ship it here..lol

Never mind, I see you’ve already answered my question in a previous comment. it looks great. I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you! So far so good😁
If you don’t mind me asking, what company did you go with? Thank you.
That’s a Sawzall job!
I had a 24'x50'x11' Steal Building put up last week. Built by Northedge Steel out of New Castle, In. Crew had it up in a day and a half. I opted to buy/install all my own windows and doors. (1) 12'x10' Overhead, (5) 36"x36" Windows, (1) 36" Entry Door and (1) 8'X10' Slider. Building with Rough Outs was around $20K, Concrete + Excavation was 10K. Doors/Windows $2.5K So far, I'm loving it.
My pump truck, 50 meter, was $1500. 24x32 was$10500, 2years ago, so you're close. You're permits were much higher than mine! You've got a good size, will be following along!
Thank you! I was SURPRISED how much my permits were, especially for an “unincorporated” town. I thought they’d be fairly cheap. I’ll need another permit even for when I’m ready for electricity because it’s not included with the building permit, unreal
Was it 17k + the the 12k+ for the pad or around 17k for all? Thanks for the video, hope you give us updates later on.
The building was 17k itself and 12k for the pad. I’m planning to get electricity ran before winter but insulation and interior probably won’t come until next summer😁 The company that put up the building was American Steel Carports, 17k delivered and installed
@@savagesenseoutdoors Thanks for the information. Look forward to see your next videos on it. Does it get really hot in there with out the insulation atm? I know when I have a metal roof and no wood, it melts me heh. Can feel the heat just radiating down from the metal roof. Yours I think is taller though.
Didn't think they cost that much, so thank you for the information and break down. Great video, it looks really nice.
It can depend on your area too, shop around for quotes!
@@savagesenseoutdoors For sure. Thanks again for the video(and quick response)
Happy to help!
$5300 for labor for 4-5 guys each a couple hours of work. I wish I made $500 an hour.
Excavation work, skid steer, and rented equipment was included in that price
@@savagesenseoutdoors A real contractor doesn't have to rent equipment.
Cool bro I’m not a real contractor😂
And they were his friends
I'm a concrete, excavation, and building contractor. I guessed around $7500 excluding permits. $12k+ sure seems high.
im gonna do this to my 14 ft valco proj,,want to put raise gunnel on transom with small deck.on stern
chain locker ,fuel tank water tank in bow put small deck on bow ,3ft by whatever side to side,
I just rescued the identical boat. I’m doing mine as a center console, just because of the style of fishing I do. Do you think adding foam, made a big difference? I’m debating leaving it naked. Thanks for thes vids, you can’t imagine how perfect these are for me.
Awesome man! I think adding foam in the subfloor will help quite a bit, the aluminum won’t be so rattly and it’ll be more structural with expanding foam. I just got started on the front deck recently🤘🏻
The jobis going great.I would like to see a double hose running logitugionally to transome for drainage I think you have the best foam, but underfill so you don t have more work. Please s3nd large shirt to Baliko 261 white falls dr Columbia, SC 29212
feel better about my 30x30 slab now, thats pricey, have about 18 inches around my edges and it was a total of 23 yards of 6 bag mix and rebar was right at 7k
i just put up a 30x30x12 from max steel and they put it up in 8 hours and it cost right about 19k, to 10x10 roll ups
Nice! Pretty close to my price but mine was 17k, 2’ shorter and 2’ shorter roll ups
OK you did My bad
Just curious. Why not give the boat a good cleaning prior to the aluminum work. There might be a reason Im not aware of or Im just OCD lol
No reason, I did pressure wash it out before we poured foam. But the boat was stored outside while I lived with my parents so it was difficult to keep clean
Ii live in Massachusetts and needed a 4' frost wall. My foundation cost $15,600. My building is 26x30 with a 20x10 lean. One 4'x12' section is 8" deep for 2 post lift.
im trying to do ao 30x30 now in ma..dayummmm
@Sunbritepowerwashing concrete and the metal buildings can change quite a bit based on location judging by others comments, shop around!
@@kashtalks5 I bought mine from Best Choice Metal Structures. They have a local sales rep in Leominster MA.
How much would a foundation basement in Massachusetts cost?
Cardboard for templates are the key bud. Will help you cut pieces that fit like a glove.
You said you want the foam to be as dense as possible. Not really. You want the foam to be less dense than water. 2lb density foam will give the greatest amount of buoyancy as it has more air entrained in it. 90 percent of the reason you put foam in the boat is safety. if you take on a rogue wave and/or can't pump water out faster than the boat is sinking the foam will provide the bouyancy to keep it afloat with water in the boat and at the very least slow it down from sinking completely. The other 10 percent reason you pour foam is for lightweight structural support. thats where some people use 4lb or 6lb density foam instead of the commonly used 2lb foam. it is more dense and thus stronger and more rigid. 👍
I really need these marine foam , how to get?
Very interesting your explanation I think we might have a class to teach me
Can I use the oem front bumper with the winch?
I’d assume so. I think your OEM bumper mounts the same as this one does
Nice video, I’m replacing a similar transom and you may be covering the screws holding it in place with that aluminum angle.
Thanks for the heads up, I think I left enough space on the underside to get to them. I’ll double check when I get working on it again though!
The pink foam board and spray foam will disintegrate if it comes in contact with gasoline. It is not rated or approved material for this use. It worked as a temporary stop for your foam pour, but isn’t the right material to use. It would be better to block those gaps with other material that can be removed later or an approved foam insulation.
Unbelievable they called for a pump truck for that job
My friend runs the pump truck… not so unbelievable😁
Looks good. I am planning to buy a 30x50 very soon. I noticed that the sheetmetal does not go down into the notched ledge. Is that the way it was supposed to be?
Unfortunately not. It’s supposed to get Z-flashing that goes from under the siding and down into the notch, my concrete pad was barely too large for the Z flashing to fit, even though we followed instruction of their engineering department to the T. The builders opted to add an angled trim piece and silicone the perimeter instead
I was happy to hear they were going to silicone the perimeter for me though, that’s the next best thing behind Z flashing
@@savagesenseoutdoors Oh ok, that is actually one of the details that I am researching before I get my building.
@@ujeepit yeah I was a big disappointed I wouldn’t be getting the Z flashing. Whoever I talked to in their engineering dept steered me wrong for that one.
I was quoted 65k for a 1 stall addition to my residential garage stall. Sucks. I wish I lived rural and just put up a metal garage much cheaper. I currently have a "2 car" garage 1 large door that claime it's a 2 car.
Would have never thought 100 tons of gravel or a pump truck would have been needed at that site.
The spot it’s going was at a pretty good slope, about a 2’ difference. The pump truck wasn’t needed, but my friend works for the company so he got that on site for a good price
@@savagesenseoutdoors it makes things easier for sure. I did two 18x30 slabs for my shop all by hand. luckily i got gravel for free, some rebar for free too. So i was mostly in it for the concrete cost. Great video.
Thanks man I appreciate it! Good to hear you were able to get some slabs poured for cheap👍🏻
Man not passing judgment but that doesn’t seem like much of a help from friends….. you got hit harddddd on the labor
I’d like to see a full deck on the front
Yes sir! I’m currently excavating for a 30x30’ on my property but the next step for the boat is framing the front deck!
Appreciate the information on the foam.Am in the process of redoing a bass boat deck and transom and wasn't sure where to get the foam or what to use. Thanks
