    Was Hannibal really a genius ? Had he really won all those battles thanks to his genius ? So why he Lost as soon as he Lost superiority in numidian Cavalry, he simply got defeated ?. Whether those who venerate him like it or not, without the numidians Carthage couldn't sustain a single day War against Rome.

    • @historyandwar
      @historyandwar 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I consider someone a military genius if they consistently defeat larger armies with smaller forces while keeping their own casualties low and inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. By this definition, Hannibal undoubtedly qualifies as a military genius. He achieved all of this and remained undefeated in Italy, despite facing overwhelming Roman resources and manpower. Even after losing the critical support of his Numidian cavalry, he still avoided defeat in Italy, except for being held back by the Romans in the battles at Nola. It’s worth noting that even other celebrated military figures, like Alexander the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte, relied heavily on their core troops. Alexander’s campaigns depended on the discipline of his Macedonian phalanx and companion cavalry. When his troops refused to advance into India, his campaign ended. Similarly, Napoleon's dominance relied on his Grande Armée, and once it suffered catastrophic losses in Russia, his ability to win battles declined. Hannibal's ability to maintain his army and remain undefeated in hostile territory for over a decade is unparalleled. In my opinion without Hannibal’s leadership, Carthage couldn’t have sustained a war against Rome for even a single day. While the Numidian cavalry was instrumental, Hannibal’s genius lay in his ability to maximize the potential of every resource available to him. But Once Hannibal's cavalry commander Maharbal said "Hannibal, you know how to win a victory, but you do not know how to use it."

    This battle, along with the following Battle of Argos, is proof that even during the early Hellenistic period (323 to 214 B.C.E.), Sparta was still militarily strong enough to defend itself and wage war against other Greek states and non-Greek factions, and the same is also true for other Greek poleis such as Hellenistic Athens, Syracuse, and Massalia. And yet, ordinary people/non-historians believe that the Greek city-states were on the decline during this era. Anyways, excellent video👍!

    This video in spite of being titled with the name of the battle that it is about , does not describe the battle of Olivanto at all , it merely declares that it took place after the Normans received an ultimatum. What a huge void ! It is the size of the title of the video itself.

    • @historyandwar
      @historyandwar 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I couldn't find much information about the Olivanto River battle. From what I understand, it was a pivotal moment in the Lombard Rebellion, where Norman cavalry on the flank successfully resisted a Byzantine attack. The Norman cavalry then executed a counterattack that decisively routed the Byzantine forces. However, I am struggling to create a 10-minute-long battle video based on this, as there’s limited detail about the battle. The same issue applies to the other two battles. I mention the battle in the title because it was the final major engagement in the late phase of the Lombard Rebellion at Melfi, where the Normans fought as mercenaries. After this victory, the Normans transitioned from mercenaries to feudal lords. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the video. I’ll fix any mistakes and make improvements moving forward."

    The Byzantine general , in charge of the invasion of Sicily , was not a good enough diplomat . This shows how incredibly demanding the position of a general is or can become , because , on occasion , the qualities that are demanded of him , go way beyond the merely military ones , even if the general’s military qualities are already extraordinary .

    This battle, and in particular the relationship/interactions between Antigonus and Pyrrhus, is somewhat similar to that of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen from the Sengoku period of Japan. Despite both having been enemies and fought many battles against each other, the two samurai warlords had developed a deep level of respect for each other to the point where when Shingen died in 1573, Kenshin actually mourned his long time enemy’s passing, having viewed him as a worthy opponent, similar to how Antigonus reacted upon hearing of Pyrrhus’ death, as shown and described in this video.
