Rescuing an old English upright piano from being thrown away. I tackle the problems on a budget. A moving company had this piano in their storage facility and was marked for disposal but dropped it off to my place. The piano was generally in good condition but it needed new key tops and a good service and clean. Key Words... Beginner piano. Fixing an old piano. Free piano. Buying an old piano. ...
Old Yamaha U1 school piano.....RESCUED!

I rescue an old Yamaha piano from a primary school. The piano was beaten up and two keys were not working. I take toe piano to my workshop and bring the piano back to life by repairing the faults and giving the case a new paint job. I sprayed the case with satin black spray paint and tuned the piano and now it is ready for a new home.

Rescuing an old German upright piano from disposal which hasn't been tuned for nearly 20 years! I tackle the problems on a budget. A fellow dealer had this piano in his van and was on his way to the tip but dropped it off to my place. The piano was very out of tune so I tuned the piano back up to concert pitch. Piano tuning, string repair and removing a mouse nest were the main issues. Key Word...

As you have a compressor, I'd strongly recommend getting a paint spray gun, even the worst, cheapest Amazon special will run rings round spray cans in terms of coverage and tunability (i.e. the ability to adjust the spray width and paint flow etc). They're not hard to learn and once you get the hang of it you'll wonder how you ever put up with spray cans (I speak from bitter experience 🤣)
That piano is beautiful.
Who'd of thought a strapping fellow like you would be so scornful. I suppose old pianos are so ten-a-penny that you can pick and choose which to renovate. I'd love a piano but I have no space so I'm about to spend £1k on a digital keyboard that feels and sounds as near to a piano as I can get. Soon as I have room I'll get the real thing, reconditioned will do fine.
I would have replaced all of the strings. I know it is a big job, but it gives the piano a new life. Good video.
Amazing 🥰 I find these piano transformations very heartwarming. Thanks for sharing.
Nice shout out to Trenna @johnsfurniturerepair. I’ve watched her for years. I have just watched your channel for the first time - Imight now be hooked in piano repairs now. Thanks😂
I can't believe you would consider trashing a beautiful instrument like that because of a mouse nest.
Call the mouse Joanna!
ONE COMMENT: Perhaps you might consider alcohol on the keys and the boards underneath to kill mouse bacteria.
Requiem for the 🐭mouse?🐁 😁😉
I’m no expert but what a lovely tone it has. Great work!
You know that piano is anerican made and was done by my ex and I. The floral design was done by me, alongside with the blue designs inside the piano. I think the piano was in storage with alot of other things I had made. You might want to check the storage for mice. Also. No more muse ums. I am the one that stained and drew the flowers on the piano. For sure that is my piano.
I'd hate to think of being that piano's former owner and thinking "Why is my piano playing notes on its own and making skittering noises?
Wonderful job. However, I would recommend wearing a mask. There are some diseases you do not want to inhale! You can always wash your hands, but not your lungs!
I am working on starting a piano rescue organization in Wisconsin
The piano has been resurrected. But sadly, not the music loving mouse is 🐭
It was one of these which we had in our Assembly Hall at my grammar school in Peterlee, Co Durham. Lovely piano which I remember had a nice short action which was easy for me to play as an untrained self-taught piano player in my teens. Haven't seen a Welmar Baby Grand since, until this video.
It is beautiful
A piano never dies if the frame doesn't have a crack the pin block could be replaced the action replace part's if necessary patch the sound board if need to the hammers use a niddle to softene the striking point then your tuning is going to be easier smooth mix spirit with shelack flakes apply France polish you have a new piano Aeate kgotso
That piano sounds good I love the wood and it’s condition looks good
I was so confused when you said you'd only need 2 tunings for a piano that is so out of tune. And then I flinched so hard when you instantly tuned them to 440 hz! You're either super skilled or lucky that only two strings snapped
1:20 - did you need a teatnus shot after this sequence? How did it turn out???
When you say dry lubricate the action joints, are you referring to the joints with centre pins?
i was thinking of building one for myself , fool iam ,its impossible.
When you attempt to tune it and bring it up to A440 good luck…. It’s SO FLAT .. it will fall back a tone
That piano has probably had one tuning in its entire life!
Imagine even thinking of dumping a piano that just needs a clean and tune
What kind of mute is that? I just tuned a spinet and used my rubber wedges and ran out of places to put them in a few spots. I’d love a different kind of mute
OMG! Don't be such a wet blanket! It's only a little mouse that has sadly died
Good job 🙌
Thank you so much for the video. It was heart warming to see this brought back to life
THANK YOU for breathing new life into this worn and forgotten old friend!!! I can only imagine the countless hours of happiness, joy, and satisfaction that this piano will bring to the new owners!!! I also wanted to personally THANK YOU for taking the time to play the piano so that we can all hear the beauty, charm, warmth, and true personality that is unique to every piano!!! GREAT JOB!!! BRAVO SIR, BRAVO!!!!❤️❤️🙏🙏😊😊👍👍
Great work. You can use "Big Boy" two-part car body flexi filler from Toolstation to quickly remedy the scratches and dings. 👍

un trabajo muy bien hecho, yo quiero ser su alumno!
I love the music you've put in the video. I know it's a lot of extra work but it's beautiful and I hope you keep doing that.
What a beauty (the piano as well as this channel)
Wouldn’t using a strobe tuner like a Petersen make it easier?
THE PIANO IS MY WHOLE LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If I’d have a u1 I’d replace the Yamaha hammers with Abels for better sound.
i was expecting some deadmau5 piano cover
Fantastic work - Would have been a tragedy for this piano to end up at the tip - Great to see this piano being given a new lease of life.
The tuner has the joy of playing a piano when it has the "Bloom" on it which only last for a week or so
No shop vac in your shop? They make quick work of mouse houses .... and stuff. Maybe hire a boy. "Oh Mouse Boy!!"
Just out of interest, why are you spacing the hammers with the action out of the piano? surely it's better to space the hammers with the action in so you can make sure they are hitting all 3 strings?
As there were only a few out of alignment, it didn't matter. When it comes to tuning it I can re address it, turns out they were all fine. On my previous video (school piano Rescue), I took all the hammers out to fix the loop cords so realigned them whilst in the piano.
I’ve never really encountered a Welmar I didn’t like.
I most certainly have! they're not all good
The first Welmar I obtained was a school piano which has safety castors on it. I think it was 4th or 5th piano collection so was still learning. Anyway, I attended the school, full of confidence and started to lift the piano in order to get on its end. Didn't realize how heavy it was and half way through lifting it, almost giving myself a hernia, the castors (which were installed incorrectly too close to the edge of the piano) were still on the floor and the piano slipped away from me. I couldn't stop it in time and it crashed into the wall leaving a massive dent in the plaster/sheetrock! Fortunately for me, the teacher was only concerned for my wellbeing and wasn't bothered about the hole. 😳
@@churtonparkpianos4240 School pianos have a terrible life! The Steinway (A?) in the hall at Nelson College years ago wasn’t in good shape….
!!!
Great video! That is an absolutely incredible price considering all the work you put in, do not undersell your expertise!
Can you give me advice just today I got a free Baldwin acrosonic spinet piano, going to fix it up. I didn’t look much to see what will need to be done from what I looked it just needs a good cleaning and tuning, but when I pressed down a couple of the keys on the piano it doesn't come up, I'm thinking it might be due to dirt or objects stuck underneath it, im not sure
@@Joyfulkeysinstrumental-lu5ri hey, firstly try a hair dryer or heat gun. Most of the time, sluggish keys have a bit of damp which need to be cleared. Blast the area for a few mins repeatedly pressing the keys. If that doesn't work, determine whether the key is sluggish or the action. Get your finger under the wippen and lift and see whether or not the hammer returns normally. If it does, it's the key. Wippen/hammer. Take them out and test them for stiffness. If stiff on the joint, you'll need to remove the flange pins and install smaller ones. You can buy sets of flange pins for a few dollars from alibaba. You'll also need a pin extractor and flush cut cutters. If it's the key, remove and squish the balance rail felt (top middle) and the felt under the key. There is a special tool for this also. You can also use a small round file and clean out the hole under the middle of the key that sits on the balance rail and clean the pin with metal polish or wd40 if it's already clean. That should solve any sluggish behaviour. Howard piano industries have created videos for both of these issues. Good luck! Andy
Can you give me advice i just got a free Baldwin acrosonic spinet piano, and I'm going to restore it i didn't look much to see what all it needs i know most of the keys when I press down don't come up right away sometimes not at all
