Thanks for stopping by. Regarding Kenya's Speakers of Parliament, so far, Sir Humphrey Slade, was Speaker of Parliament from 1963 to 1970. At independence in Kenya in 1963, the two main political parties in Kenya, were the Kenya African National Union (KANU) and the Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU). Jomo Kenyatta was leader of KANU, and Ronald Ngala was leader of KADU. Around mid-1964, when Jomo Kenyatta was still Prime Minister of Kenya, Jomo was seated in Parliament, while Ronald Ngala was on the floor of Parliament, heavily criticising Jomo and his Government, for not delivering on promises made by Jomo and KANU before independence. Jomo sat quietly as Ngala continued with his criticism, until it got to point when Jomo reached into the inner pocket of his coat. What for? Jomo was apparently reaching for his gun, to apparently "use it" on Ngala. The Speaker of Parliament, Sir Humphrey Slade, noticed Jomo reaching into the inner pocket of his coat, and shouted at Jomo to immediately stop what he was doing. Sir Humphrey Slade shouted at Jomo on the lines of "Mr. Kenyatta, stop what you are doing immediately! Mr. Kenyatta, get your hand out of your coat right now!" Jomo obeyed and did not pull out his gun from the inner pocket of his coat. Jomo however immediately walked out of Parliament, and never again participated in parliamentary debates. After the incident with Ronald Ngala and Sir Humphrey Slade, Jomo only attended Parliament went "he could not avoid it," such as, for the State Opening of Parliament, and for the reading of the Budget.

Greetings, Richie. And you spend quite a bit of time on the internet, right? Look who's talking! Jomo was in Europe for 18 months from March 1929 to September 1930, and again, this time for 15 years, from May 1931 to September 1946. For part of his second stay in Europe of 1931 to 1946, Jomo and a guy from the Caribbean known as George Padmore (there is a George Padmore Road in Nairobi), even lived in Moscow, when both had briefly embraced Communism. Both Jomo and Padmore however found Communism too demanding, too fanatical and too indoctrinating, and therefore abandoned Communism after a brief trial. The legend goes that Jomo and George Padmore had even began being suspected of being British spies because of their reluctance to fully embrace Communism, were tipped off of this, and therefore fled Moscow in the dead of the night never to return. I don't know where Mzee Kenyatta picked up his German. It could have been in Germany or Britain, because Jomo did many things to survive during his 15 year stay in Europe of 1931 to 1946, including, working as a translator, working as an editor for different publications, making a brief appearance in the 1935 movie "Sanders of the River," and working as a farm labourer in Sussex in the South East of England, where he was shocked to discover that Whites also worked as farm labourers, because as far as Jomo was concerned, from his experience on Whites who lived in Kenya back in the days of British East Africa/Colonial Kenya, is that all Whites were very well off. Jomo was also fluent in Maasai. There was heavy intermarriage between Maasais and Kikuyus back in those times, and Jomo's paternal grandmother was a Maasai lady known as Mosana. Jomo also had a brother called Kungu, who disappeared, never to be seen again, during World War I of 1914 to 1918, when many Blacks in Kenya were being forcibly recruited to work as porters for British soldiers fighting German soldiers in neighbouring Tanzania, then known as German East Africa. To avoid being recruited as a porter, Jomo took refuge with his Maasai relatives in Narok between about 1914 and 1920. His stay in Narok of almost six years, is certainly one of the things that contributed to his fluency in Maasai. He went to Narok as Johnstone Kamau wa Ngengi, and came back from Narok as Johnstone Kenyatta. As you are aware Richie, "Kinyatta" is a beaded Maasai belt, and it is still not quite known what it is that transpired in Narok between about 1914 and 1920, that convinced Jomo to adopt the name of the beaded Maasai belt "Kinyatta," drop the names Kamau wa Ngengi, and become Johnstone Kenyatta.
