This solution worked. I bought a GE XWFE filter from Walmart online for $29.99 that I thought was legit, until I installed it and was quickly met with the "Err" This workaround solution of yours is the best, got my new filter marked with today's date. God bless.

Thank you SO much for this video! I did this and it worked for me! I thought maybe it didn't because of the Filter Status still being red, however, I saw the comment that this would be the case. The light being red does not bother me at all! I just wrote the date on the filter and know in 6 months to replace i! No problem and with being able to buy the Amazon filters so cheap who cares about that little red light! God bless you for posting this video and too bad GE did this to their consumers.

Just tried this on my GE Frig. and it works great. I just peeled and cut the chip reader portion so I didn't have the entire label slapped on the back ( WORKS ). GE wants 50$ plus for one filter and I got a three pack from Wal-mart for $57.00 total shipped to me. Thanks so much for this hack.

Did this yet my filter status did not reset. Once it hits 0, the newly installed filter will not work. Suggestions? I dont see a way to reset the status light without buying a new XWFE filter.

Worked great! Thank you kind Sir! 3 filters for $27 instead of $50 or more for one. Now let’s just hope they work/ taste as good also. Worth a shot.

I worked as a water treatment plant operator for years. The water that leaves the treatment plant is good, it's what happens to it in the distribution system that may make some folks want to filter it. It's probably still fine to drink, but depending on where you live it might pick up taste and odor issues on the way to your home. Refrigerator filters are for the most part activated charcoal filters that help taste and odor. You'd be surprised how much bottled water comes directly from the tap, but if it makes you feel better then go for it!

Good video! Just curious, since you've already got a Recteq-700- why didn't you guys get a Recteq Roadwarrior 340 ? I'm currently considering both....

This is the fastest and most convenient way to use the less expensive filters. I didnt even use a hair dryer- just stayed real patient and pealed it off, then stuck it to the back of the fridge. Note: I had to stick the label a bit higher up than the video to ensure the sensor lined up with the interior fridge sensor. Works like a charm:-)

if that were an nfc tag you could use an app on your phone to copy it

What is any different than your last post covering the same thing? Why doesn't the filter meter work with the new filter like the old one after putting the label up in the fridge?

I just tried this but it didnt work and I kept getting the Err code whenever I pressed the water button. The work around for me was, I took the XWFE label and applied it to the new XWF filter and it worked. Fridge is only 6 months old so I'm wondering if the newer models will not read the chip since it's backwards when stuck to the back of the fridge.

You can also use nail polish remover or acetone to gently melt the glue holding it on for an easy peel off.

FYI: If you ever call for warranty work, DO NOT let GE know about the hack. It could void your warranty.

As far as turning off the Red light, if you go to Bang4Buck channel’s “GE filter hack XWFE to XWF” someone in comments told how he removed control panel, easily, and put a piece of black tape over the led light. My fridge doesn’t have a chip fortunately but I don’t want to buy filters at all, so I reinserted the filter plug that came with the fridge.

No wonder consumer hate American brands.

What is the purpose of the RFID chip in these filters, just gives you the filter replacement light or stops water flow?

Interesting. I just replaced my filter with a "genuine" GE XWFE and took off the label on the old "genuine" GE WXFE and there was no RFID chip like you had. I bought mine for less than 1/2 price online and, who knows, maybe they're good fakes but I'm not having a problem with them. (Now adding an edit -- I wonder if maybe my Café model doesn't really need a WXFE even though the lit says yes. I need to manually confirm on the control panel that the filter has been replaced. So maybe I lucked out that my cheap knock off is OK.)

I used a heat gun on the label and removed it carefully and placed it over the plastic reader spot, however after I installed a generic filter all I got was ERR, a friend of mine who is inquisitive looked at the rfid tag and noticed there was a paper looking flap that was not folded back over the bottom of it, he installed the label on the new generic filter and it worked fine. I think the flap is there to block a certain part of the rfid chip.
