commercial lighting breakdown: how to scale 3-point lighting setups
Today's episode is an in-depth look at how I lit two 30-second commercials for Litehouse Ranch. We'll use the 6-step process from my cinematic interview lighting video as a guide for how to scale three-point lighting setups into full scenes for commercial or narrative shoots.

    Did you happen to test the brightness between the 600cii and the 600d with the provided reflector, and not the Fresnel? I remember Aputure saying they made the COB wider on the original 600c so it did not perform well with the F10 as it wasn't optimized for it. Is that the same case on the V2? Based off their product sheet the max intensity should be closer than 2/3 stop using the reflector.

    • @thegranitegaffer
      @thegranitegaffer วันที่ผ่านมา

      I didn't. I tend to only use the 600's with the F10 fresnel. I'll make sure to include that kind of testing moving forward!

    Could you say whether there's a hot spot on this light on the new 600c ii with its hyper reflector? One of the great things about the previous 600c was the fact it didn't have the hot spot with the hyper reflector that the other ls600 lights were notorious for, is it the same here with the new dish?

    • @thegranitegaffer
      @thegranitegaffer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I didn't notice an obvious hot spot when I quickly tested the reflector, but in full transparency I basically just throw that away and only ever use the fresnel with the 600's so I'm not the best person to ask.

    These do seem like great lights, and the built in magnets are nice. As a buyer, though, I'd be worried about Aputure releasing a new version with their newer color mixing tech and rendering these obsolete. Honestly, at the price they're at it isn't too much more to just buy titans and get the rental value and IP rating that comes with those. Godox also has some IP rated tubes that are brighter but are also substantially cheaper than titans. So these are kind of in a middle ground imo.

    • @thegranitegaffer
      @thegranitegaffer 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That new color chipset is a valid concern, imo. It'll be interesting to see what their release schedule looks like after the pushback they received upon release of the 600c II from owners of the original. As an owner/operator at my level, I'll take the bars over the titans any day. They're easier to rig, easier to use, look better in frame, and are currently more requested than titans. I can't comment about the Godox products, I unfortunately haven't gotten my hands on any of their professional level equipment. I also haven't really ever wished I had more output from the bars I've got though, being color accurate is more important to me.

      Prices have had a significant drop for the PB12 in the last couple of weeks, so you could well be right about the release of a new version.

      @@thegranitegaffer the 600c ii release I can really see how people were upset. Aputure should’ve just delayed the 600c until they had a design that optically lined up with the fresnel. With the advent of their new tech theres no way Im buying any aperture product any time soon knowing it’ll all be devalued very soon in resale and rental value. That said the 1200x looks very very compelling, and I am considering it over the nanlux units if I decide to but a couple more 1200 LEDs. Oh, I see. Must be a market difference. Im in a small market, but titans are asked for often. You can sell most people on other options, but people definitely prefer titans, for good reason in my opinion.

      That's a great suggestion! I probably won't have the time to get to that comparison, unfortunately. But I do love the usb-c charging of the amaran tubes, and I've heard the battery can last a little longer too. I really love that rail system on the infinibars though. And if you don't need CRMX, and intend to light your set via Bluetooth with sidus link, and don't put tubes in frame very often as practicals, then you'll probably be just as happy with the amaran tubes as an infinibar for less price.

    Nice. I especially love it's fanless. I think you haven't mentioned max output :(, have to go to their page. I knew this light will come out, cause they shared the manual long time ago :D. Is velcro on diffusion, crate and softbox falling apart? I got this issue with my new 240C, but it has different softbox design. I got a replacement softbox from Nanlite service and it's the same crap ... looks like lately they wanted to cut costs and ordered the cheapest velcro possible. Apart of not being able to attach the velcro anymore it's real health hazard. When detaching any piece of softbox velcro hooks fly anound to be inhaled or eaten. Two of them got into my eye ... not a great experience ...

      It sounds like you use that feature way more often than I do, thanks for letting me know! I almost exclusively use this light with that diffusion panel on so I haven't noticed that. That's something for other people to watch out for for sure!

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@thegranitegaffer Yeah pop-up softbox is a bit different. You can leave it on the panel, especially on the one that does not fold (like 240C). Sometimes I have to remove or change the diffusion in my 240C and this happens. I actually probably removed the diffusion like 10 times and grid 5 times and both already have a problem with proper attachment :( - cause it lost so many hooks.

    Great… was thinking it would be nice to make all the graphs and charts a downloadable option. Agree on the gut punch (I own 2 mark 1) and agree this is a stop gap between the current RGBWW and the next step… with Aputure acquisition of Prolycht and the addition of indigo in the newer amaran and electro storm… one has to think the next colored lights will be a major shift away from what they’re currently doing… maybe RGBIACL? Nice work here, especially because I’d never have the patience so super appreciate seeing all this data you collected. I think I’m ok with my mark 1’s and will await the next generation…

    Why do you think it is that it is common practice to put the camera on the shadow side? I understand what it does, the change in depth, the shaping, the definition and so on, but WHY....? So much portrait photography is front lit or lit from the same side as the camera with great results. Take a look at award winning portrait photography, it's everywhere. It would be understandable in cinema to orient the camera on the shadow side with far side key for moodier, grittier, darker tone films, but it's practically all of them...and yet photography practices do not follow this....at least not as standard practice. The main difference I can think of it time. We take in shots in cinema for far less time than examining a portrait photo, maybe it is useful to quickly get a sense of shape... still I feel this does not fully explain it....Have you ever been given an explanation on the why? Thoughts?

  • @silas1414
    @silas1414 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If I can request two topics; I'd love a video where you explain the sequence that you follow for lighting a set relative to the shot. For instance would the camera placement already be decided and you will light around that spot so the camera is not on the key side, or do you light for the scene and then the camera is placed on the shadow side, so camera position following lighting....or does it change shot to shot, how does that sequence and plan work? Also I'd love a video on shooting day for night especially when the actors are using illuminated props like flash lights or phone lights etc.

      @@thegranitegaffer aaah thank you so much! What a great feature! Love it 🤩👌 Kind of a bummer that not all accessories are available for the lights. For example the Fresnel 2x is missing from the Amaran 200x. But maybe it will be added sometime 😊 Thanks again 🙏

    dude this is seriously helpful content, I feel like there aren’t enough gaffers showing off their craft on here. This is especially helpful for a beginner dp such as myself, more so than any video on lenses, cameras, gear etc. Looking forward to seeing more of your content in the future. Thanks again

    Man, awesome review! Thanks for the comparison with the F22c. Btw, whats the brightest of them? In your graph the Pavoslim is 3000/2000 Lux at 3 feet, is that measurement with or without any of the diffusers? What about the f22c lux at the same conditions? Sorry for so many questions but I'm about to buy one of them and want to be sure!

      @thegranitegaffer 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I should have tested that, but with the differing panel sizes it didn't feel like such a 1:1 comparison. I tested the pavoslim with the thick diffusion on!

    Hello, I have a question regarding Bi-Color vs Daylight and the fact that Bi-Color uses half of it's LED diodes depending on the color temperature. Are the advertised lux measurements of Bi-Color lights a sum of both cold and warm LED arrays or just one at a time. For example I'm eyeing a Neewer CB60B and it boasts 34 000 lux at 1 meter, but is that when the color temperature is set to around 4500K, so both arrays are more or less fired up or not. Thanks!

    • @thegranitegaffer
      @thegranitegaffer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great question! The assumption is that advertised lux measurements are from the 5600K output unless otherwise stated! Bicolor lights don't mix their daylight and tungsten LED arrays at 100% power EACH in between 5600K and 3200K, but TOTAL, ie. 70-30%, 69-21%, etc. If BOTH daylight and tungsten LEDs were at 100% power draw in the middle of the color temperature range, then the wattage would be much higher at 4400K than at 5600K or 3200K. The power draw would have a bell curve as we use the light at 100% intensity, and that would make it difficult to use when calculating power consumption over a total circuit. So to resolve this, manufacturers standardize output of a light to a maximum wattage usage. This is why a lot of lights are named after their wattage draw. (aputure 300/600/1200d, nanlite evoke 900, etc.) And **white LEDs are brighter than tungsten LEDs when measured at an equivalent wattage**. So, that's why the marketing maximum lux measurement is always assumed to be the 5600K value! (Someone feel free to chime in with a light that doesn't follow this trend!)

    • @kris.krustev
      @kris.krustev 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thegranitegaffer thank you for the explanation! In that case is there any merit to getting a daylight balanced light? If the argument is that they are generally brighter, if a daylight light and a bicolor one are put side to side at 5600K won't the output be very close if not the same? The bicolor lights are measured at 5600K after as well. In that case you get a light that's just as powerful at a daylight color temperature but with the bonus of being able to change it with loss of power as a downside. Correct me if I'm wrong!

    Great job taking some very difficult subject matters and explaining them clearly! My only note (and I know how much extra work this is, specially as a 1 man band, so know that its relatively minor) is mixing in more real world examples from interviews you've lit as you discuss different lighting styles/looks. You did a great job with the graphics but I think a little bit more show and less tell would elevate the content.
