There was a time when Jaguar was the top choice among luxury sedans, directly competing with BMW. However, today, the situation has completely changed, and spotting a Jaguar on the road has become quite rare. The situation is so severe that Tata has announced it will discontinue Jaguar's entire current lineup by 2025. Jaguar, once known for its best-looking sedans like the XJ-even Enzo Ferrari acknowledged this and called the E-type the world's best-looking car-has had to make this drastic decision.
So, what happened that led Jaguar to shut down its entire lineup?
According to popular opinion, a major reason for Jaguar's downfall was its reliability issues. There were numerous instances when major problems occurred suddenly in the engine without any warning lights. However, in reality, reliability doesn’t heavily impact sales. For example, Jaguar’s sister company, Range Rover, ranks even lower than Jaguar in the reliability index, yet its sales are much stronger, showing a 3.4% increase in sales between 2020 and 2021. This shows that reliability doesn’t impact sales as much. The real reason for Jaguar’s low sales is the global trend favoring SUVs.
