Congrats on your Let Us Not forget. On the long version, there is 2 minutes of Edison speaking, and then the Start Spangled Banner is played. On the shorter version, only Edison is speaking and the Star Spangled Banner is omitted. Both versions were released on Edison Blue Amberol cylinders. Thanks for watching my videos!

S.S. Kresge company was the "father" of Kmart! My father worked at an S.S. Kresge store in the 1950s, I worked at a Kmart in the 1970s and again in the 2010s. My mother worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company from the 1950s until the 1980s. It was years after my mother passed that Sears & Kmart merged, Linking all three historic names. Small world indeed.

I do not collect antique phonographs. I do own 1 though. It is an original 1897 Berliner Trademark. The phono is almost like new. The goldtone horn has a few dents but still pretty nice. I bought it at an estate auction in 1986. There were 1200 discs including 43 Berliners and 60 other 7" discs. Unfortunately, the rest of the records, were rather boring. Included was an original 1899 Berliner catalogue. Paid a whopping $400 for the whole works. The auctioneer described both the phono and 7" discs as "childrens" That helped keep the price down. LOL.

Some additional albeit slightly more obscure details relevant to this cylinder: It is a directly recorded cylinder recorded way back in 1910 - originally being released for sale in September 1910 as a four-minute wax Amberol. In 1927, Edison was occasionally filling out his monthly Blue Amberol offerings with the occasional earlier directly recorded cylinders recorded prior to the introduction of the Blue Amberol. Source material included pre-Blue Amberol recordings by performers/ensembles not longer available to Edison, which included Victor Herbert's Orchestra, Harry Lauder, Fisk University Jubilee Quartet, and Sousa's Band. Regarding this Sousa Band recording: this is a great example of the high quality, the higher level of sound fidelity of Edison's superior acoustical recording process - - vastly superior to any other recordings by any other company then available. [If only he had had access to the celluloid patents back in 1908: he was only lacking a durable cylinder material to blow away the competition]. By the time he finally gained access to the needed celluloid patents (circa 1912), Victor and Columbia had cornered the market with the leading popular and operatic stars of the period. Of course, it didn't help that Mr. Edison took it upon himself to identify recording talent,d criticizing the likes of Rachmaninoff with "He's a pounder". Recording quality control of early Edison discs involved Mrt. Edison as having to actually bite into the wood frame holding suspended a laboratory model disc player. At least he seems to to have liked my recordings. Yours trooly, Uncle Josh
