The Meandering Grampa
Mexico
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ก.ค. 2021
Follow the exploits of 81-year-old meandering grandfather Don Walker as he solo travels through the world in search of meaning and adventure -and FUN!
Originally from Boulder Colorado, USA, Don is currently a resident of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, but that could change at any moment. A senior citizen with five grandkids, Don has traveled solo to many other places as Belize, Guatemala, England, Germany, India, France and Sri Lanka, as well visiting and living in numerous locations around the United States and Mexico.
You are cordially invited to share the adventures and insights of this slightly eccentric ancient wanderer via the videos he posts on this channel.

Grampa in the Butterfly Preserve
Always pretty much stuck in the woods, Grampa goes looking for butterflies but finds only gopher holes along the central coast of California. Nevertheless please come along and walk with a (sometimes grumpy) old man through a lovely grove of Eucalyptus trees within earshot of crashing Pacific Ocean waves.
As a somewhat frail octogenarian myself I know that far too often people of our age group are no longer able to experience the outdoors in person the way we once did, so it's my pleasure to share these experiences with my online friends who still enjoy seeing the natural world even if only by way of a silly (but hopefully fun) little video like this one. :-)

Such a beautiful place to wander, nature is absolutely perfect for peace, tranquility and plenty of tracks to check out. Have a beautiful day, through trees feels like a home, away from home ❤.
Thanks for the nice comment. Yes, I love getting out for a peaceful walk among the trees. The California coast has many wonderful places to enjoy nature. -Grampa :-)
🎉🎉Thank you for sharing 🎉love Mexico 🇲🇽 PDC Mexico 🇲🇽 💙 plans to retire there really soon 🎉Thanks 👍 keep sharing your journey
My pleasure. I love Mexico too (clearly) and even though I'm currently staying in Playa del Carmen, next week I'm headed to Oaxaca for a couple of months. I had originally thought to settle down in Playa but frankly I'm having too much fun checking out new places ...last year I stayed in 5 different cities and enjoyed them all, so I haven't really settled anywhere permanently yet. Best wishes in your own journey! -Grampa :-)
I subscribed
Well thanks for subscribing! I love making these little videos and it's fun to know that I have friends out there who enjoy watching them! -Don Walker (Grampa) :-)
Love this ! 🔥 🦋
Thanks again ThomasJay723 ! I've been sort of traveling around the world alone for quite a while now, in part because it's cheaper that trying to live in the U.S. anymore and also because I just like to see different countries. I feel lucky that I can still do this at the age of 81 because I know many others are not so fortunate. Recently I've mostly been in Mexico -next week I'm going to Oaxaca- but in a few months I think I'll visit Spain, so stay tuned! (And BTW, these are all very inexpensive places to visit.) Thanks for watching! -Don
Excited to say I will be there in just a few days time! Yay!
Great! I bet you will have a great time. 😊 Cheers, -Grampa
Excellenté! Thank you 🙏🏼
Happy to hear that you liked it. Hope it was helpful! :-)
Retire in Mexico???? are you kidding man??? Get the hell out, before it is too late
nice video gracias amigo .
Thank for the compliment! I'm just a retired old man who loves to travel, and I'm currently staying in Mexico - a country which I love. Last year I decided to try making these short videos just for fun, and to give a "hobby" to practice while I'm traveling so I'm always pleased when I hear that someone likes my little "movies" :-) If you like other Latin American countries you might also enjoy video i did while I was in Guatemala last fall... Thanks again, -Grampa
Seems busy with people in PDC. How about Puerto Morales?
@@derrick8224 Puerto Morelos is indeed less busy …right now at least. Nonetheless PM has recently been “discovered”, as they say, and will undoubtedly experience exponential growth very soon. To put things into perspective, when I first visited Playa del Carmen in the early 1990’s the population was only about 20,000 and today it’s over 300,000. You can think of it as good or bad depending upon your point of view, but entire Caribbean coast of the Yucatán has been growing rapidly for the past few decades and shows no signs of letting up. Have you checked out my video about Puerto Morelos? -Grampa 🙄
@ I will. Appreciate the response. You have a fantastic channel. Thank you for sharing your story
Don Walker up close and personal. Well done.
@@MrTonycliftonsr Thanks. It’s fun to be here …but next month I’ll be in Oaxaca, so stay tuned! -Grampa 😊
Fantastic video...ty for sharing...
So glad you enjoyed the video. Atitlan is truly a beautiful place! -Grampa :-)
Hello grampa, do you have the name of the place you stayed at in puerto morelos? it looks beautiful 😊
Hi Catherine, I rented the place via Airbnb but I don’t recall how they listed it. However I have been in communication with the owner / manager and you can contact her directly which will probably get you a better rate! She’s a very woman named Cristina and her phone number is +52 998 223 3604 . She uses WhatsApp and that’s probably the best way to text her although plain old SMS texting would probably work. Obviously the place is very nice and generally booked ahead so you should text her as soon as you can. It’s OK to say that you got her number from me -she’s seen the video. Hope this helps! 😊
What a views 😍
Absolutely, Aleksei, it truly is a breathtaking location with some of the most stunning views one could ever imagine. I'm afraid that no video recording could really capture its beauty and essence in a way that does it justice. It's one of those places that must be experienced in person to fully appreciate all that it has to offer. :-)
Looks perfect for someone our age.
Yes, I thought so too. 🙂 However next week I'll be staying in Playa del Carmen ...of course in a similar sized place. Since moving to Mexico I haven't really tried to settle down -instead I've been exploring various towns around the country. As a so-called "senior citizen" I'm still having lots of fun. (If you have time, please check out the new video I just published about Guatemala.) Cheers, -Don Walker
Very nice. Fun videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences in Mexico
I'm glad the video was helpful. I'm living full time in Mexico now and I love it! 🙂
And BTW, I just published a new video about Guatemala, where I spent a couple of weeks in September. Cheers, -Don Walker
Overpriced
Perhaps. But it was the best I could find on Airbnb at the last minute. In any event I've been comfortable here this month, and next month I' moving on to Playa del Carmen! :-)
Hey, I like that place too!
You should go there more often ...at least when you're in the neighborhood! ;-)
What you forgot to mention is that (1) these massive blooms of sargassum only began arriving a decade or so ago and that (2) the cause has been determined to be the influx of agricultural fertilizer runoff into the Congo, Amazon and Orinoco rivers which feed the algae and leads to blooms. So people are the cause of this mess.
You are right, I should have mentioned that -but at the time I created the video I wasn't aware that this had been the cause, only that the sargassum had been increasing over the years...
@@DW_Walker It's yet another mess brought about, at least in part, by human-caused global heating.
Nice place Grampa enjoy your stay in Merida .
Thanks! I've been enjoying it here -but next month I'm returning to Playa Del Carmen to walk on the beach. :-)
Cool video! And if you want more views and real viewers, check out for services
Was just there last week, I couldn't wait to go see this town, I have never in my entire life seen sooo much trash along the stretch of the streets and the edge between the beach and city ! So much seaweed, the city is starting to smell !
Gosh, sorry to hear that Puerto Morelos was such a disappointment for you. I enjoyed my stay there very much earlier this year but the Sargassum seaweed wasn't too bad then. It tends to come and go depending upon the waves and the weather. As for the littering and the trash, yes, that's a typical Mexican problem ...actually pretty much a third world issue in many other poor countries that I have visited as well.
I really loved walking around the ruins!
I really enjoyed viewing your meanderings! So much to see and loved the Monte Alban ruins!
Thank you I can’t wait to get there!
@@DidierAgudelo-o3v it’s a lovely little town which like most of the Yucatán coast is seeing a large surge in growth. I hope you enjoy your visit there and I also hope that Puerto Morelos is able to manage its growth wisely. 😊
I’ve been to Mexico several times and I love the vibe in Puerto Morelos. I’ll be in Puerto for two weeks this November celebrating my birthday 🎉👙⛱️🇲🇽
Happy birthday! I love PM also. 👍
Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video. I thoroughly enjoyed staying in Oaxaca and I’m even considering moving there permanently next year. Such a wonderful city! 😊
Hi from Oaxaca 😊nice video !!! I’m new subscriber enjoy the state
I loved being in Oaxaca last year. I’m back in Playa Del Carmen now but planning to visit Oaxaca again in 2025 for a couple of months …I still haven’t settled down in one place yet. 😊
I would also love to know the name of place you stayed. How did you book it? I’m going for 3 weeks I. October. Thank you for posting
Hi! I found the place on AirBnB and you can probably locate it there too. However you might also contact the owner / manager directly and get a better deal. Her name is Cristina and she's very nice. She told me I could give out her WhatsApp number. She uses the name "Puerto Morelos Cristina" and the number is +52 998 223 3604. :-)

Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, Puerto Morelos is a lovely little town ...very peaceful compared with Cancun or Playa del Carmen, but still a fun place to be! -Don Walker
When I ran into you last month on 5th Ave in Playa, I had just celebrated my 50th birthday. If I'm still around then, I hope to be living in Mexico well into my 80's just as you! Enjoy!
Well JijiB, I wish you all the success in the world and I'm sure you will achieve those goals. I was very pleased and flattered when you told me that you enjoyed my video posts last month, and it was so nice to run into you. :-) Right now I'm exploring Oaxaca and I'm currently working on a new video about the city. (I've never been here before and it's been wonderful new place to explore.) 50 is such a good age. . . The first time I visited Playa Del Carmen I was 50 years old myself! Playa was 1/10th the size back then and that was my first introduction to the Mayan Riviera. Of course I loved it, and I've been returning ever since. Currently however I'm set upon traveling for the rest of this year and won't make it back to Playa until maybe January ...we'll see. Meanwhile thanks again, and best wishes for a wonderful life in Mexico -and of course Playa Del Carmen! -Don Walker ( Grampa! )
@DW_Walker Thank you so much!
Maybe one day, you'll add travel to Panama to your list of places to visit very affordably. We are in Puerto Armuelles, oceanfront at the Pacific, the historic town largely developed by the Chiquita Banana company, but they pulled out I believe in 2008. The town is still trying to economically recover from the loss of those jobs, but is truly coming along with infrastructure improvements, and beautification of the town and beachfront. We feel extremely safe here and there is very little crime other than "crimes of opportunity" where things left out in a yard may disappear. But we don't worry about break ins, nor about crime againsr us, The overall crime rate in Panama is very low, and we feel safe even walking at night, and even in the cities. Being aware, being friendly, looking folks in the eye and saying hello or have a great day in Spanish is enough to help folks realize you are "trustworthy" and worth treating well. Back to beautification, Chiriqui (our province), Baru (our district) and Puerto Armuelles are doing many things to help improve the region and Puerto Armuelles and especially targeting beautification and trying to attract more retirees, more ecotourisn, and more business investment here. Puerto recently installed a Cinta Costero walkway and bikeway along the beachfront. g.co/kgs/FGLV4bZ They have been rebuilding the fisherman's wharf, which has been in severe disrepair. They plan to add markets for fishermen, farmers, and craft vendors there, last I heard. it's quite pretty now, compared to how it was before some of these projects. There are plenty of affordable accommodations *AirBNB* is a good resource, or just asking folks like us. Booking.com is less likely to know of many of the places here, as many folks don't list their rentals, they just rely on word of mouth. But those who do list tend so use AirBNB. Perhaps a place for your to consider traveling in the future.....
Way to go grampa have fun !
Thank you. I'm having a great time so far. ... And I hope you find my videos helpful & fun! -Grampa :-)
Paul and I really enjoyed this video Don. Your videography skills are truly growing, especially in your editing work. Love the mix of video sections with still photos, and the wide variety of interesting transitions you've included. I'm still a relative beginner (okay intermediate) on doing a good job taking the videos in the first place, and then skillfully editing, plus including still photos, and I don't do much yet with transitions. YOU INPSIRE ME!
Thanks Janine! I'm a relative newcomer to TH-cam but I have done some video creation before. Nonetheless I'm still learning and practicing -and having fun. :-) So cool that you and Paul are TH-camrs too. Let's keep on encouraging each other!
