The term “country” can have several meanings. Internationally this term primarily refers to Sovereign states (for example the UK or USA), but also culturally distinct Nations without sovereignty (like Scotland, Catalonia, Kurdistan). Lastly sovereign states can also be nations at the same time (like Japan, Sweden or Germany), also called nation-states which are also called “countries”. So it’s a bit confusing, and to avoid confusion it’s important to more clearly define what “country” means in the specific context. 😅

@@MinstrelEmpire No. Scotland is a Nation and a semi-autonomous region of the UK. Similar to Catalonia or the Basque Country in Spain or US states. If Scotland was as much of a country as Russia and China. They wouldn’t have had the need to or even needed permission from London to hold the 2014 independence referendum and Scotland would have its own military, border controls, get to decide if they wanted to stay in the EU or have 100% control of all UK laws and policies affecting them. Scotland is not sovereign outside a few minor areas. And sovereignty is needed to be a country (sovreign state)

@@Fluxwux no Scotland is very much a country just like all the others, I'm from there and I know my own country, the UK is 4 countries together and the UK is not a country

@@MinstrelEmpire Do you have your own military separate from the UK? Can you close the border with England and the rest of the UK? Do you have a seat in the United Nations and embassies with the power to write treaties? Can Scotland implement any law it wants separate from the UK? And lastly, again. If you are “just as much of a country” as Russia and China, why did you need to hold a referendum for independence from the UK in 2014? And why did London need to approve it? The UK is a Sovreign country/state (“country” means this in colloquial speak), Scotland is not. It’s a nation and a semi autonomous region of the UK. Scotland just has the name “country”, but it bears no actual meaning besides symbolism. Change my mind.
