Hey Doug I totally agree with adding the surge protector there but I wasn’t aware that it was required in a sub panel. I know 230.67 requires it when replacing service equipment but you did not replace any service equipment. I looked thru article 242 and couldn’t find anything. Could you let me know where in the code book it requires a surge protector in a sub panel?

I hate cutting boxes into islands. Years ago, my coworker and I were wiring up about 1/2 of an old house that was being renovated, including a total gut of the kitchen. Without confirming with the GC, homeowner, or our boss, my coworker took it upon himself to cut in the box for the island receptacle, and ruined a $1k piece of walnut. Luckily i had one foot out the door of that clownshow of a company so i didnt get to see the ramifications

So you have 2 options. Run a new longer wire or find a breaker box where the 100 amp main is higher up so the wire will reach. I don’t like any kind of splices. I hate junction boxes also. Maybe you can get a separate box just to put a main breaker in. That was it can be mounted so that wire will reach them go from that back to that breaker panel. I don’t know. I would have just ran a long enough wire to start with. If the meter is removed you might as well at that point. You just have to be verry carful not to touch them incoming lugs on the meter pan because electricity shows no mercy.

Farmer's workaround: 1 strand of bare aluminum bailing wire ought to do. look, the led lights turned on. That ought to be good for 100 amps, no problem. What could possibly go wrong.
