We talk a lot about leading through uncertainty on this podcast. But in this episode, the emphasis will be on navigating uncertainty in our own lives. In this conversation, Michaela O'Donnell and Lisa Slayton, co-authors of Life in Flux, discuss the importance of "uncommon postures" when navigating the fog in life, building personal adaptive capacity, and the need to pause and listen in the midst of uncertainty.
THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:
Lisa Slayton challenges default behaviors and encourages developing uncommon postures to better support oneself.
Michaela O'Donnell emphasizes the need to embrace change rather than avoid it, recognizing that old methods won't work for future challenges.
Slayton identifies personal awakening catalysts as recognizing potential possibilities or facing pain and disruptions.
Adaptive work involves recognizing that past methods won't suffice for future challenges, according to Michaela O'Donnell.
The metaphor of a ship in the fog illustrates the need for intentional stillness in uncertain times.
Slayton describes how cutting the engine in a fog-bound boat is a counterintuitive but necessary action to regain direction.
Markus Watson reflects on personal experiences with uncertainty, realizing challenges can be embraced even when they are "unfigureoutable."
Slayton shares an experience with a church team and stresses the importance of exploration and adaptation.
Navigating ambiguity involves recognizing multiple paths forward, not just one clear solution, notes Michaela O'Donnell.
Leadership should shift from problem-solving to curiosity, embracing uncertainty and adaptive learning.
Markus Watson discusses the clarity of identity in understanding personal strengths and aligning roles accordingly.
The Enneagram aids in understanding personal and leadership styles amidst change, recognizing strengths and limits.
Lisa Slayton emphasizes the challenges pastors face due to excessive expectations and the need for managing these effectively.

The things that Tim say like "defending God" attitude, that is exactly what some of these God’s Not Dead movies are driven by. Unlike Tim who had evidence to back him up, those movies have relied on cases that didn't back up their "persecuted" movies and they keep making these movies! They're contributing to this persecution complex nonsense.I'm happy his book is making money and that the God’s Not Dead movies have been losing money. If Project 2025 happens, don’t be surprised if MORE people want nothing to do with Christ. It will be Christian Nationalism. It's like what happened when Roe v Wade was reversed: more abortions happened, some women can't even get D&Cs because some doctors are terrified of having the book thrown at them if they perform an abortion that the state doesn't deem legal, abortion rates went up, women are being arrested for freaking miscarrying, for goodness sake! Just like restricting abortions made things worse, Project 2025 will make things even worse for any church, even as going as far, from what I was told, as telling businesses to not have their businesses opened on Sunday because they think that's the Sabbath. Like, excuse me? Who do you think you are to tell me when I can have my business opened on? I believe the Sabbath never changed and had remained on Saturday. They don't have the right to control when I rest if I ever had a business.

Matthew 22:37-39: Jesus summarizes the law and the prophets as "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"By applying these biblical frameworks, we can work towards building bridges, fostering understanding, and promoting a more just and peaceful world.

The Bible says we, as believers, should be of one accord. Best way to avoid polarization in a church is indeed by the members viewing the world through a biblical perspective/world view.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s I was an enthusiastic supporter of Christians getting involved with the Republican Party. I heard some 'old guy' Pastor warn that mixing politics and the Church would damage the Gospel. I thought at the time he was an old fuddy duddy. Turns out he was correct and I was terribly mistaken. I regret being part of mixing the two.

One one side, they support abortion, same sex-marriage, etc. On the other, those who claim to be Christian’s are voting for a man who’s antichrist in every sense of the word. A man who’s a master deceiver and fits the biblical description of the AC. MAGA is the epitome of idolatry, heresy, and blasphemy. So many Christians are over looking these facts for cheaper grocery and gas prices. They just want life to go back to normal and don’t care how Trump is antichrist.

Isn’t the barrier to becoming a Christian dictated by Christ? Few are chosen, no? Whoever ends up in heaven is on God’s hands, apparently. Sure it’s uncomfortable, but the Bible says that every parent’s child that doesn’t end up in heaven was predestined that way.

1.Acknowledge your emotions: Give yourself permission to feel your grief and other emotions that may arise during this time. Suppressing your feelings can only make them worse. 2.Seek support: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about how you're feeling. Having someone to listen and offer support can be incredibly helpful. 3.Take care of yourself: Get plenty of rest, eat healthy, and exercise regularly. Taking care of your physical health can help you to cope with emotional stress

Division: Political involvement can lead to divisions within the church, as people with differing political views may clash. Worldliness: Some argue that the church should remain separate from the world, and that political involvement can dilute its spiritual focus.Loss of credibility: If the church becomes too closely associated with a particular political party or ideology, it may lose credibility in the eyes of those who disagree.

So well said. Being willing to lie, cheat, steal and demonize, devalue, or do violence toward "the other" in order to seek self-righteous worldly power and control over "them" is an egregious form of bigotry and false pride and reflects a deep spiritual sickness. Not what Jesus had in mind or demonstrated at all. Sadly it's destroying the credibility of the Evangelicals themselves and the Gospel in the eyes of many, creating a huge stumbling block and driving many away. Perhaps saddest of all is the bitter vitriol being directed at "other" Christians. Self-justification is its own idolatry.
