Thank you for this wonderful documentary and the personal insights. I had never heard of this place and stumbled accidentally upon this video, for which I am very glad.

Many of the boys were mentally physically and sexually abused. This 'orphanage" was not a home but a brutal catholic institution for children of the poor or unmarried.

my parents lived in Goulburn in mid 60s they said it was a hole of a place they were glad to get back to sydney

I dreamt this place last night , In my dream I was excited as I was in Australia in front of a St John building which looked perfect , I remembered the names of the place so I could see where was I , when I wake up in the morning in UK . In my dream I saw it perfect and people (ghosts )were all adults, some wanted to remain child and few ghost were children. I Doubted in my dreams that they were ghosts as there were no elderly in them. They messaged me to be sensitive about others feelings, we break other people heart without knowing, we offend others without noticing the impact it has on others, I understood their message before I woke up from the dream. o well, long story short, as soon I woke up today , I googled it and got shocked as the building is haunted and it does look exactly the same - except this is damaged and to my shocking , a haunted version of what I saw last night. Just to be very clear that on my dream I and the ghosts were in the front yard of this building last night and some ghosts were standing on the street.

Well done on this documentary, with the commentary, captions and pictures themselves indicating the life led by so many youngsters. It's heartening to hear that although life at the orphanage was hard, it turned out as preferable to life outside the institution. But in light of recent enquiries into child abuse in religious schools and other institutions, one can't help sense the torment and later trauma that many (it seems) must have experienced. So sad to think that some of those with smiles and looks of enjoying an innocent childhood would experience traumatic adult lives.

My Dad was there from 1942 till 1952, he always spoke with respect for the nuns, life was hard, but the family did not want the 4 boys after their mother died.

My step father lived in this home in the late 60's- 70's, we were just talking about it today. We stopped there back in 2000, on our way to Sydney from the Gold Coast. Quite a creepy place, it was housing domestic violence victims at the time I believe. My step father definitely doesn't have the happiest of memories regarding St. John's. He wasn't very fond of Sister Genevieve or Sister Elizabeth, but mentioned he took a liking to the Sister over seeing homework. I'll show him this video, I'm sure he'll be interested anyway

Very well made documentary. I'd love to check it out with some mates as we love photographing and exploring old areas. Are we likely to get in trouble if we explored it?

Thank you for making this beautiful video. My dad had a service station near St Johns and a friend lived across the road. It was sad to read about the fires last week. The photos in this video are outstanding!

I'm in all the beach pics taken at Batemans Bay, and those sports pics, ie egg and spoon race. tug a war were held in Canberra. The home used to divide us into two teams and we'd compete against each other at " The Canberra Races'.
