I was a BNSF conductor myself and I I saw that he ran through the switch which in of itself won’t derail the train if you continue the movement the same direction. The problem is they changed directions causing the front and rear trucks to go onto different tracks causing the derailment. This one is on the engineer. He/she should’ve seen that the switch was lined against them. Usually when switching, you take care of the switches you’re using for headroom first, and always double check your work.

Rule 6.27 violation, paraphrased: must be able to stop within 1/2 range of vision short of a switch not properly aligned. There's much more in this rule, which all crewmen need to memorize.

This is the first time I've ever seen a derailment before. Never watching train videos for a couple years now. That was really cool. Really too bad that you didn't get more video of after a derail to find out what happened.

I wonder if they would have listened if you pointed out that something was wrong (assuming you did know, it doesn't seem as though you did)?
