1980 BMW E12 M535i Updates: drivetrain, awards, short drive
I celebrated the 20 year mark of owning this beauty in 2023. Since the last video on the car (link below) I've been looking to eliminate leaks and beef up the drivetrain. I've also been driving it a lot more and showing it off at BMW Car Club Events and 80's car shows. My son also got his driver's license and he drives the E12 and has come to appreciate it greatly (he'll take over ownership of the car one day). He loves the raw powerful feel of the car, the 80s look, and the big expansive glass cabin.
What show should I bring it to in 2024/2025 where attendees would appreciate the provenance of the car? I'm choosing between one of these: Legends of the Autobahn during Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, the Pittsburgh Vintage show, and/or Vintage (at the Vineyard) BMW event. I'm torn between driving it or trailering it there as well. I'm happy to get your advice and feedback in the comments!

Prep for winter: A garage overview, Nov 2021
มุมมอง 5443 ปีที่แล้ว
I decided to show a behind the scenes view of my winter garage prep, and a bit about my home garage layout. The daily driver garage is up top (not in the video) and holds 3 cars, the basement garage is underneath the upper garage slab and holds 3 cars as you'll see, and the detached garage holds 4 cars (5 if I use the lift to stack them). I'm really fortunate to have all this garage space and I...

Coming from george’s video, good luck on future endeavors, brother!
Love the car im from saint paul got a f30 330i and love it already hoping to move my way up in the bmw world. Ill be keeping my eye out and hopefully i see your car out on the road one of these days
Awesome car!
Phenomenal video and very informative! I just bought an '81 E12 528i, my first BMW. It's in good shape but needs some work and I'm looking forward to slowly restoring it. It's a lot harder to find information on these online than something like an E28 but this video was really helpful as I get to know the car.
Love the Denon CD player beautiful looking piece.
Wow very nice system, it so close to mines i have the ML 380s, 37, 360s In the process to get a 336 for spkrs Martin Logan CLS with SVS 13.5 sealed subs and a pair of Polk 707's that is to die for they sound that good i was shocked they were around 5k my buddy has a pair of Focal that are 10k no contest.
Thanks very much for the comments. Yes we have nearly the same set of Levinson red displays and chassis staring back at us in our high end racks! I am actively selling the 37 and 360s however because I like the Denon setup better.
@adamwilson2203 I definitely understand Happy sales.
Awesome E12 man! 👍
Absolutely beautiful car, good on you for saving it and then some!
With a Procar engine they could have shown Brabus the middle finger!!
I totally agree. If they had even built an E12 M535i with the M1 street car's M88 it would have been a BMW M classic for sure
Great video. This is my favorite BMW of all time and had the privilege to drive one in 1980 in the UK.
I don't think I've ever seen a respectable car get an owner it deserves like this one.
Thank you, that means a lot to hear that
nice rear bumper, great underside, awesome love for the ultimate driving machine, mine was euro grey market car,
i owned one for 3 years , probably 30 years ago , not many were made for uk market , mine i think was called cidar green the green cord recaro seats , loved that dog leg gear box , only thing i did was valve stem oil seals at about 100.000 miles not many cars could keep up with it at that time , i was king of the road ... ha ha would love to drive it again now , had e12 520 , then 528i then m535i . remember going to bmw to get new m badge as mine got nicked , they did not sell them , you show them your log book and you get one for free as they did not want people putting that m badge on none motor sport cars , not like today ...............
Wow, the underside of that car looks amazing
I can’t wait until I have the time to make my 530I look this good
great info
I love e12. Had '80 528i and 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 engines.
Hi Adam, best regards from germany. Very nice video. Nice to see that you are still enjoying your E12.
Hey Peter! Thanks for the comment and watching my video. Send me an email and let's catch up, it's been forever. Adam
nice, I know this car as well (i am in Germany), is very much underrated
Congratulations on achieving such a beautiful and detailed restoration of this glorious e12. I saw it early on in your ownership journey. Thank you for sharing the story here. My favorite anecdote here was about the interior fabric. Kudos! I hope to catch up with you at a future 5er event. I really miss the old east coast 5erFests from the early 2000s. Fortunately, we still have The Vintage in May each year. Cheers, “Tim in N FL” on mye28
Thanks Tim, great to hear from you! Yes maybe I'll get this to Vintage sometime.
thanks for sharing this beauty with us again. I love what you did to it over the years. I passed on a Polaris m535i 25 yrs ago. It had some rust issues I could do without and purchased a stunning beautyful 525 (e12) instead... still kicking myself for that... 😒 Currently restoring my `76 528. I just love these cars. When maintained well, they are such great drivers. The 528 will be my daily driver. Should be back on the road next spring. Is your son driving it in the video? I hope he enjoys it too. 👍
Thanks so much for the encouragement! Yes that is my 17 year old son driving the E12, he loves it.
Always amazed to see your car again !! I am presently in the process of maybe acquiring one from Germany ! I'll let you know if I end up with it !
Great to hear, please share when you get it including vin# and color, options, condition!
The system looks great!
Not really “vintage”. This is one hell of a system that’s better than most on the market today.
Thanks! I know it seems like yesterday to me but in reality it has been over 2 decades on this gear. Over three like on the Nak Dragon! Jamming to it now and playing stuff my 13 year old daughter likes (Adele) to get her hooked.
nice , looks exactly same as my last e12 which was a ceda green m535i i had the m colours painted on the sides and front like yours , my rear spoiler did not have m colours on , same interior apart from green cord interior , i loved that dog leg gear box , gave it great pulling power , never let me down in the two years i owned , i stripped the engine down with my friend at about 110 ,000 miles and changed the valve stem oil seals .... at the time i owned very few cars could get the better of it... that was over 30 years ago , i owned e12 520 then e12 528 and last the m535i which was a rare care and not many made for the uk market .... at the time somone stole my m badge of the rear and went to bmw , there they get proof it is a proper m car and you get given the m badges for free. they did not allow anyone with a none m car to get them .. but in those days they did mot stick m badges on and bmw like today ... out of the 29 cars i have owned this was one of the ones i had most fun in as well as mk1 golf gti , think you call it the rabbit in usa ... first car ford capri mk1 1600 gt which i did not buy , my friend wanted a vcr player and i wanted a car ...
Thanks for the note. I do like that green and other rare colors on E12 M535i's
Just stumbled across your video. Few other people remember what great speakers Energy used to make before they were acquired then killed off by Klipsch. In honor of your awesome system, I've fired up my Veritas system - 2.8's, 20Ci center, 2.0Ri side surrounds & 1.8's being used as rear channels (all of which are properly powered by 90's correct 8008BB, two 8008X3 & 8002 Aragon amps - yet another great brand acquired then killed off by Klipsch). and am listening to 90's compilations. My system & I salute you! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the reply, especially from a fellow Veritas 2.8 owner. You should do a video on your system. I never thought when I posted this video it would get such a response!
@@adamwilson2203
@@adamwilson2203 Yeah, the 2.8's are excellent. But I've been really surprise how good their baby brother, the 1.8's are. Too good to be rear channel speakers, so I've just moved them to a second system and replaced them with 2 Energy (of course) AC 300''s. The Veritas/Aragon system sounds so good, whether they're playing LP's through a Rega P10, streaming music over an Aurender A20, or playing movies from either an Oppo 203 or Pioneer CLD laser disc player. Veritas owners unite! :)
It's really good what you've done. I'm fussy about E12's and this is a good one. One point to clarify, the BMW bonnet badge in 1980 was smooth on the surface. I know this because I noticed this compared to the enambled/raised edge badge on a 1978 528 at the time. Just so you know..
Thanks for that, it's been 20 years this month (May) that I've owned the car. Still love admiring it today (check out my instagram at flipwils11 for more pictures). Good to know on the Roundel, I guess I got my years wrong thinking all E12's would have the enameled raised badge. I still really like it though versus the plastic so I think I'll keep it on there.
@@adamwilson2203 Yes. That year was a facelift year. Black remote plastic door mirrors both sides....Square column stalks....Digital central clock instead of analogue....fuel reserve warning light now built into fuel gauge...electronic ignition added... And another thing... Don't let anybody tell you this is just an any old Euro 5 series....It's very unique rare car...at least in Europe and your fortunate own it.
Why move the Mark Levison , heated bed 😂
I worked at Circuit City in Nashville, Tennessee while I was in college at Tennessee State University 1974 - 1982 . It was a fun experience. It took me some time to finish school do the fact I had to pay everything myself. My parents couldn’t help me but the love of Hi-Fi has extended all the way until now. I am 67 years old retired and i still love my Hi-Fi equipment. I have a Denon 2000ae intergrated amplifier, pair of Magnapan .7, Technics sl-1200 turntable , Nakamichi 700 cassette deck, Teac x10r reel-to-reel deck . I go to Axopona audio show every year in Chicago to dream about upgrading 😅my system. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thanks, we had a place called Hifi house and I would go there and drool over the Sony ES stuff. Then I discovered the big time high end stuff! I still love Sony ES and Pioneer Elite though.
Amazing audio gear Adam you have there 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cool stuff.... 🍺👍.... !
Thanks for checking out the video. It is indeed a cool setup I'm lucky to own!
Beautiful rig dude. In the early 2000s I had the 38 preamp, 331 amp and 39 CD player. I used to sit there and just look at and touch that equipment. My dream amps were always the 33h's. Love that you don't bat an eye at the transport's "finicky" behavior -- that's the high end!
Thanks for the comment! I frequently am in awe that I was able to put together this incredible system that I dreamed about in high school. And as much as I like the Denon setup, the big red lights of the Levinson always look so cool when the lights are turned low and I'm listening to a great recording.
Please more videos for 2023 about this e28
your wish is granted!
nice work im sure you put alot of time in it , does this car have a m30 or m90 engine ?
Hi! It's the original M90 engine that all E12 M535i's came with.
That thing is just pure beauty. To me, there`s no better engine sound. I`ve owned all kinds of vintage BMW`s over the years, but the e12 just fits me like a tailored suit, so a few weeks ago I purchased a `76 528 after being beemer-less for almost 15 years... That was too long.
Thanks very much for the comment, I appreciate it. It is perfect affirmation having my 16 year old son drive the E12 and E28 back to back, and he tells me he would pick the E12 every day (and twice on Sundays)!
Мечта!
Awesome restoration, gorgeous car. My dad owned a 520i e12 and it was great. This is the top of the top of this serie. Gorgeous. Ale
Thanks, I feel like having owned an E12 528i prior to this (a great car, but not the top of the series of course) and dreaming about a real E12 M535i I'm still in love with this car and appreciate that I get to be her steward through all these years.
Nice resto truly a labor of love. I had an early E12-based E24 635CSi euro . I always loved the big analog clock with the outer dial controlling the fan speed .BMW switched to the digital one like yours has at some point.. That would be a cool backdate to do if the analog one is out there in BMW unobtainia parts land
Thanks for your comment, and it's funny I'm with you, I prefer the analog clock. Classy aesthetic. So I was on the fence when I did the resto of the car of what to put in. But I decided to go with original because back in 1980, digital was a big deal and original to the E12 M535i! So that's what I used.
most boring vid i ever saw. just wanted to see rev it up 1 single time
Thanks for your honest reply. Perhaps there are some drift videos you can watch that will be more exciting.
@@adamwilson2203 sry to disapoint you sir. its just my opinion a sportscar should be driven like its made for, not like a 524td
Damn you have a nice job done to your E12! Bless you Sir!
Thanks! A labor of love
Wow...absolutely beautiful! One of my favorite cars growing up, still have a nice sales brochure/booklet from that model i picked up at Bellevue BMW 40 plus years ago.
I appreciate the note, I'm obviously biased but I think she's beautiful as well. And others at car shows in the last year or so agree, because she's won 3 people's choice awards!
Fabulous car, really nice. I have recently started to restore a 1974 E12, but a more sedate 520 4 cyl auto.
Thanks for the note, any E12 is a beauty to me. Such great cars.
Beautiful interior.I say this car carries the spirit of BMW.Its the most comfortable Bimmer, unlike the e30 that feels a bit harsh.
Thank you! I love E28's, E24's, and E32's as well as E34's and E30's of course. But the E12 just feels like a different era, before BMW sedans were the affluent person's car choice. Undiscovered and not apologetic for the tradeoff for performance versus comfort.
@@adamwilson2203 Unfortunately we hardly have the e12 here these days ,dont remember when i last saw one even with the e28 very few around but you are surprised occasionally with a good looking one and you feel good, it makes your day.A few good looking e12's i used to see have disappeared and i wonder where they are..
love seeing these debadged. if you don't know what it is already, you don't need to
Thanks! I totally agree but some of my other cars still have their badges. When I bought the wagon though, I took the badges off the first day!
Mechanics never get bothered by cars. They deal with cars everyday so are not bothered by cars.
Amazing how some folk are treating these cars like old bangers
I would say that was the case in the early 2000's. The E12 M535i's (real ones) were so obscure, it was just another old 5 series! Now people who know......... THEY KNOW
I want that steering wheel on my '88 is. I had an E12 and tii, E30 and 4 E28 (533i, 535is, 533i, 535is). They are the BEST BMW overall but come on man the dash of the E12 is mobetta' right? Take care. th-cam.com/video/zzi0R5PS3DQ/w-d-xo.html&t BTW with an open exhaust and EAT chip I clocked mine 6.98 to 60 (original engine, 200K). But that's trashing the car. It's fast enough though for sure. People get so caught up with speed and power it's stupid IMO
Lovely example, Adam. Best, Tim in N FL from mye28
Great video! Yes I owned a E12 m535 replica back in the early 90’s. I think it was a 528 from memory. It was metallic blue with the pinstripes & silver BBS wheels. It was a headturner back then in New Zealand and I often got stopped by cops because I was only 22 yrs at the time. Great memories!
Thanks for the info, great story!
What to say? My best compliments for this special car, I always like 👍🎖️🎖️🎖️
Thanks very much!
